    It was meant as a threat too. After all, Floki killed Athelstan because he loved Ragnar, and is teaching Ivar to be a real viking because he is the son of Ragnar. Just like Rollo lived in the shadow of his brother and resented him, Floki decided to become the shadow of Ragnar.

King Ecbert we tend to see as a 'bad guy' because the show follows the Vikings point of view; however you could make a very strong case that Ragnar is the bad guy as he is invading English lands whereas King Ecbert is trying to unite all English kingdoms, for power yes, but ultimately to protect England from invasion so that they are not weak and fragmented.

    The real life Vikings really did the ships above the land tactic. They used this to get around the terrain of Russia in order to get into the Black Sea and open up a shorter trade route with The Turks instead of having to go all the way around the long way. And it was called Portaging. This episode is obviously inspired by that and while not 100% accurate in terms of France, still it is grounded in real life tactics they used to use.

    I'm not against Ragnar, but I'm just glad that Rollo finally found a place in the world, that went beyond the footnote of being "Brother of Ragnar". Developing strategies against his own people and betraying Ragnar is awful. No doubt about that. Rollo himself lacked self-worth, his own identity. Betraying Ragnar here is the first time that he made a decision by himself. He wasn't talked into it by Jarl Borg, he didn't do it on his brother's orders or to save his brother's family. He did it for himself. He did it because now he is someone. Now he is Rollo, the duke. He's someone and not just someone's brother. It's the curse of the siblings of famous people, I think. Weird comparison...but look at the Jackson 5, for example, and how the fame of Michael Jackson affected that family. TL;DR: As you (Steven) said...none of these people are idealistic heroes. After 4 seasons of misery Rollo finally found his place. Something, although other characters don't realize that, Ragnar is struggling with aswell.

But he's done some _very_ side eye worthy shit that I honestly feel people do wave aside because his character is so interesting and ultimately likeable. It's the same with Ecbert imo. Historically, Vikings, particul;arly the Rus Vikings of modern -day Russia and Ukraine, were quite skilled at portaging around river obstacles. This is one of the reasons they were able to set up such a vast trade network all across Europe, from Ireland to Constantinople and beyond. Their boats were much lighter than what you might expect due to their advanced (for the time) construction methods. They truly were masters of both river and sea. Actually its surprising how quickly ancient and medieval armies could achieve feats like this. You have to remember its an army and part of what they do is gather lumber, and craft engines of war. That many men could clear a huge tract of woodland in a few days and set up supply lines to bring the lumber back to camp. Siege engines, bridges, towers and other constructions could be put together and taken down extremely quickly. Remember huge groups of men would be working shifts so there would never be any downtime. In the First Crusade when laying siege to Jerusalem Crusaders were able to dissemble their towers and move them to a completely different part of the wall in a single night.

While understandable, anytime you judge a past culture (especially one from more than a thousand years ago) based on what we think and do today, it's probably going to lessen your ability to become attached to some characters and their actions. I stand by Ragnar, Bjorn, Laegertha, and the like. Down with Rollo. Also, I just love you guys. She threatened him, what else was Ragnar supposed to do? She brought it upon herself by making a threat that she couldn't back up. This wasn't Ragnar being insane, he was perfectly rational. Besides, she was clearly manipulating him and getting him addicted to that drug so that she would have control over him and would be able to elevate her own position. Ragnar wanted her to be like Athelstan, but she clearly wasn't like Athelstan, she didn't love him or grow to care for him, there was no mutual respect, she was a slave trying to make the best of her situation, and she was willing to harm Ragnar's sanity in order to do so, making her a threat that needed to be eliminated, even if she didn't also literally threaten him by saying she would reveal the secret about the settlement in England.

    Well, thanks for the input, it helps me understand. And I guess the cliff might have been a better place to do all this because it was possibly farther away from transited paths than other parts of the river. But the way it's shown in the show, I keep wondering why wouldn't they just get the boats out of the river at a nice river bank, and then mount them on some wheels, instead of all the contraptions they had to make. And how could they spend weeks doing all this without some scouts from Rollo discovering them? I mean, Rollo knew his brother wouldn't give up, so why wouldn't he send scouts to learn what the Vikings were doing?

  • @samfetter8191

    @samfetter8191

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@aaronia8092 the answer to these questions lies in the distance of the location to paris and the terrain in between. And one answer is that a cliff isn't a place scouts would go looking. But you would need your own scouts to make sure of course. And the other thing about the location is this...weels are hard to make. You need saws for planks or boards. But they had mostly axes as tools. So you have to roll the boats on logs instead. Now try that uphill. You would have to make something, a construction of sorts for the ropes to help pulling...every few dozen meters/yards to assist the pulling. For every ship. Over miles. With the cliff you only need one such construction and only there. From there on it is only rolling downhill. Still hard work. But way more easy. I am actually impressed by the writers of the show how they handled things. It doesn't hurt that it looks impressive either i guess.😁

This is actually something that happened in the second Siege of Paris in 885 AD, the lifting of Viking boats and carrying them overland to bypass the riverside forts. Again, very crafty. This is also how the Turks were able to conquer Constantinople in 1453--they carried a huge number of boats overland, and this allowed the Turks to completely surround the city by land and water.

    Regarding Rollo and any sympathy or support for what he's doing, agree with everything you said. From a story perspective, with Ragnar as the principal protagonist, Rollo is a straight up villain. He betrayed his brother, his family, people and culture multiple times. But... From a purely objective perspective in this possible interpretation of history, considering both sides of this war and these raids, Rollo going over to support and lead Paris in the defence of their city clearly balanced the strengths of the Vikings and the Parisians. Yes, Rollo is acting out of purely selfish motivations, but regardless of that, whether he ended up doing it for greed or for noble reasons, his effect in legitimately supporting Paris would be the same. He lead a very successful defence last episode, met strength with strength, and in repelling the Vikings (whom we are sympathetic to because this is their story), he may have saved more lives. Consider if Rollo had not gone over, and Paris suffered years upon years of numerous raids and perhaps even prolonged wars that they were unable to defend against. That would have cost many thousands of lives, mostly civilians, as compared to the hundreds of willing warriors suffering and dying here and now. But also, yeah, screw Rollo.

Lokie probably organized the operation of getting the wood and building the contraptions, but he had plenty of help. As for moving the boats, it really comes down to how hard the terrain is after they are up the cliff. That would probably take the batter part of a few weeks to over a month worse case. This show and I have had a love/hate relationship ever since the end of season 3. The main reason is the time jumps they JUMP over. It gets worse as time goes on here, but the storyline never fades from sight which is why I continue to love it. I will say that Rollo...He's a secondary favorite of mine...Along with Finehair and Halfdan. Granted I've seen the fruits of the show soooooo I'm a bit like the seer at this point. Robert - "Nikki & Steven, If you knew what the gods had in store for you, you would go down and dance naked on the beach" lol
