Bjorn-the explorer, the curiousity that lead Ragnar to England Ubbe-both the earl and the simple farmer his father was, caring for his family Hvitserk-the warrior, who lives in the moment, without thinking of the consequences (more Rollo than Ragnar though) Ivar-the conquerer and strategist, Ragnar's warlord side, his cruelty and anger Sigurd-the rebel, the part of Ragnar that questioned and doubted and made his own rules
This scene forshadowes the whole story. Ivar will suprise his brothers with his ''skills'' in England. Ivars arrow shot symbolizes that he will split his brothers. Hvitserk and Ivar fighting is literally their fight, but at the end their still brothers and reunite with the Russians. Sigurd will annoy Ivar like with the cup and it will end with his death.

English teachers in a nutshell
I like how the interaction between Ivar and Sigurd encapsulates their entire relationship: Ivar sees that Sigurd has Hvitserk's complete attention, he sees an opportunity for petty cruelty out of jealousy of Sigurd's ability to meet their brother as an equal: at this point in the story, Hvitserk is the wildest and most dangerous warrior of the four of them AND the one of the boys who most takes after Aslaug (vice-stricken redhead who occasionally has disturbing visions and is ambivalent about Ragnar in the end) and Sigurd can keep pace with him with a weapon in each hand-- you can see how Hvitserk tosses one of them aside and abstains from footwork with Ivar to make it a fair fight. Ivar intentionally takes Hvitserk's attention away from Sigurd (and makes sure Sigurd knows it) just because he knows that that attention is the thing he most treasures. It's also no mistake that Sigurd attacks the CUP and not Ivar himself, because the importance is that he's knocking the cup away out of Ivar's reach, so that he can't just get himself another drink; he's forcing Ivar to depend on Ubbe a second time, which is why Ivar then attacks him directly. It's a call-forward to Ragnar's advice that anyone who tries to exploit Ivar's legs as a weakness must be made to suffer for it.

I believe it. Considering all the crawling he had to do, he had incredible upper body/core strength.
Everybody saying Sigurd is a jerk because of what happened in the dinner scene, but I think Sigurd was just fed up. Ivar really knows who he can torment best. Ubbe is too responsible, grown-up and just too sweet to get mad. Hvitserk just thinks it's funny and sees things like that as a challenge/game. But Sigurd is probably still a little traumatized because he grew up closest to Ivar, and hasn't had as much attention from either one of his parents as the rest did...

I loved seeing Ubbe and Ivar interacting with each other
I have to say this is the best character scene I’ve ever seen. Not a single word was spoken in 2:05 minutes and yet the dynamic between the brothers was so clear. Ubbe is the caring supportive older brother. ivar is the younger brother who wants to be seen as an equal in his brothers eyes. Sigurd and ivar aren’t fans of each other to put it mildly (Sigurd may be slightly scared of ivar). And while Sigurd threw his axe so it only hit ivar’s cup vs how ivar purposely threw his axe so that it would nick sigurd drawing blood shows just how ruthless ivar can potentially be . Hvitserk is the quick unpredictable middle child who enjoys fighting and is good at it. The characters facial expressions told most of the story within the scene. I don’t think I’ve seen a scene like this before. And again not one word was spoken in 2:05 minutes and yet the audience understood everything that was going on inside the characters heads. (Edit: well one word was spoken when Sigurd called hviterks name but that’s it)

I've only seen one other scene like this. That was in King Arthur with Clive Owen. The scene is back at Arthur's castle where his remaining Knights were celebrating their due freedom from years of service to Arthur. They were throwing knives and Tristan (Mads Mikkelsen) outdoes them all.

Ivar be like "Bitch please" :D
What Ivar can do shouldn't really surprise, he can't use his legs so all movement must come from the upperbody, same with his smithing. And concidering that he's lived this long, his hand-eye coordination and upperbodystrength is above normal, he trains his upperbody constantly whereas you average person trains their legs when moving. Can only imagine what Ivars grip would be like

IVAR FOREVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
His (ivars) agility/speed and reflexes are top-tier.. strong swift parrys and riposte. The fact he could maintain the bind as well as he does with no legs for extra strength (along with being completely stationary and not able to dodge either) is truly amazing. Dude is fierce with that sword!
Had to come here and see this after watching the first several episodes of the Season 6 where Ivar got bitched around by Oleg.
That fight with the sword was incredible🔥
How blessed was Ragnar to have so many strong sons. Very rare occurrence in those days
If ivar could walk.. He could have raided paris all by himself hahaha
It's a shame Ivar never used his archery skills (or swords skills) in battle when he was riding the chariot..
This is my favorite scene of the entire series So epic Imagine ivar had legs. He's wiser and has mad fighting techniques. But just imagine he had legs. He'd have been the Youngest and most fiercest of his brothers He suddenly became my favorite character after all his words. Man is just too full of wisdom😭😭
the number of times ivar is throwing axes after sigurd xD
Ubbe is really the son of Lothbrok who’ve they’ve given the a great arc. He’s a first son and a second son in one. Season 6 has really taken his story beyond anything prior in “Viking culture”, which was the whole point of Ragnar in season 1
From here on I would’ve been afraid of Ivar
Ivar’s top skill is mind-blowing. He seemed even better than Hvitserk. His fighting was amazing in the series. But I would’ve loved to see more hand to hand combat skills from Ivar.
@SmokeyGames420

The reason we don't see more of his close combat is because in reality he'd probably get wrecked by someone with access to their legs and is actively trying to kill him. This is just a simple sparring session between brothers. Mobility is just as important in combat as skills with the sword. That's why Ivar made a far better tactician than warrior. @@sahirdamani1264 Hvitserk gets ruthlessly slept upon imo. Because Bjorn killed the bear (literally the only thing he did that Hvitserk didn't do) and because Hvitserk every other episode had a crisis of faith but he was easily as good as Bjorn by the end of the show, easily. To me, you've got the four characters who just utterly mow people down better than anyone: 1) Rollo - Borg was equal when they briefly exchanged blows, as was Ragnar but Rollo, later in the fight with Ragnar and in another instance with Borg, got the upper hand. 2) Heahmund 3) Bjorn - Harald was equal to him when they fought but Bjorn was one of the four shown who just mows down enemies with absolute ease which is why I put him here, Harald was often getting wounded in the later seasons. 4) Hvitserk - Who was equal to Aethelwulf in Season 5, arguably the Saxon berserker given how he'd smash heads and break necks and go brutal on the Vikings, but later on Hvitserk just seemed to become a level above him. I feel like Rollo was the best fighter in the show period though, when he was in Treacherous One mode and then it's a toss up between the other 3. Notice how whenever he's being treacherous, that's when he performs his best? Like when he joins Borg and just rinses Arne and Floki (Floki breaks Rollo's weapon but that's it) even before Borg assists him. Same as when he fights Borg. Borg was shown to be a warrior around someone like Ragnar's level, just mowing down everyone and he threw down with Rollo in Kattegat as equals. Yet the moment Rollo betrays him with Ragnar? He subdues him the first attack he throws. Same as with when Rollo betrays Ragnar for the second time and beats him but Ragnar was chronically injured by that stage (although he did drug himself with opium specifically to dull the pain). But yeah, Hvitserk gets slept on for absolute days, when it comes to his skill and importance (he says to Bjorn how he didn't do anything like Ubbe or Bjorn but he betrayed Ivar to convince Olaf to bolster Bjorn's army to fight Ivar and it was Hvitserk who told Ivar to get Rollo's support, so he had his moments tipping the scales of war in his brother's favours).

One of my favorite scenes, but it is funny to think that growing up with Ivar they would have known he was just as skilled as they are. It's not exactly like he can sneak off and train privately.
Ragnar sons are great warriors just like him.
Ivar reminds me of Ragnar in the opening scene in season 1. Each sons captures different elements of Ragnar.
I find it mesmerizing that even though he's a cripple he's able to draw a tie with Hvitserk, who, just like all Ragnar's sons, is a great warrior. Plus taking into consideration that Hvitserk had the advantage of being on his feet while Ivar was sitting down, but I'm sure Ivar knew a way of fighting even while lying on the ground

I always wanted a brother I have two sisters and they are my family but I always wanted a brother to stand tall next to me and have my back no matter what!

I have 4 brothers, I actually would have like to had at least 1 sister so she could understand me as a female
I wish Ivar had done somemore fighting like this in York or the final battle in England. Just look at how good he was sitting on that log and then we all know to watch out for him when he is on the ground. It would have been even more epic.
I mean without any leg work Ivar was able to match Hvisterk's swordsmanship. It takes a lot of exceptional skill to be that good at swordfighting without legs
This scene was lit. This and the fist fight between Rollo and Bjørn Ironside, now that was testosterone gold.
1:49 Is it just me, or were his eyes glowing?

That's how his eyes are, I think it's a reflection of his cold heart, at least that's what I read

It's connected to his bone disorder.
I like sigurd, he is the most empatic character he was the onlyone that cared about bjorn 's daughter i can understand why he hates ivar and aslaug

tysswe1 yes the "annoying one" one only becuase hirst wanted to show a scene where we could see Ivars "ruthlessness". After seeing season 5 I feel as though Sigurd character could have much more back story and depth. His father wasn't home that much so he didn't really know him. His mother abandoned him when he was like 9 months old to look after ivar the new child. She also abandoned him to Harvard. He had to grow up without parents. He was probably the most independent. But nah let's kill him off because ivar is so much more cooler.

...yepp he is the way cooler charackter... and this show is at least a little bit bond to historical evidence so therefore we know shite about Sigurd Snake-in-the-eye but about Ivar, Ubbe and Hvitserk (Halfdan) - yeah lets fuck Sigurd in the eye. This is a Viking show godamnit - buhuhu no parents. My ass.

cristian vega Sigurd hated everyone, even his father. He was the real psycho of the family

Hvitserk was the best fighter out of the sons of aslaug imo

@@sahirdamani1264 He was better than Bjorn too. Bjorn was the strongest and most headstrong out of the sons.
Ivar The Bonerless ; ) In all seriousness though, as much it would suck to be impotent now, back in Viking society virility and the ability to create heirs was incredibly important to the male Viking identity. That's why it was such a big deal that Gabriel Byrne's character couldn't get it up in season 1. So yeah, it should be interesting to see where they take the character given how many disadvantages as a Viking he's been given. The guy playing him is a great actor too on the evidence of the last episode, got a bit of magnetism about him.

***** There's a lot of disagreement as to why he was called the boneless. Some believe he was severely disabled as in the show, others believe it spoke to his extreme flexibility while fighting. The point being that the writer in the show isn't necessarily beholden to history, when some of what's written is open to interpretation. As far as him having heirs the writer may believe that it's more interesting to make a Viking impotent. It would add to this notion that he was such a vicious killer, most likely to compensate for, and take out his frustration on being impotent. I also kind of assumed that perhaps it's not just that his legs are malformed, but that he's a paraplegic.

Also, it doesn't necessary mean he was the actual father. Maybe he just raised them as his, since having a heir was important.
I love how ubbe tried to be a father figure to them 💔😭
One of the best scenes. Surely if Ivar could use his legs he'd be the strongest viking warrior after Ragnar's death. Even stronger than Rollo and Bjorn
Love the drums
