Vikings, Nordic Symbols, Supremacists and Manipulation of Fear

On this video let us focus on a few contexts of appropriation of Nordic symbols, icnonography, mythological accounts and images, from the part of certain groups with extremist ideals, to express their racial doctrines. The appropriation and re-interpretation of the "viking" culture to establish a superficial "primitive" spirituality to justify nationalist romantic movements drawing inspiration from an imagined "Golden Age" of Pagan Europe.

It's actually derived from an Algonquian (aka Ojibwe) a word Nadouessioux, which means "little snakes". Basically a taunting nickname. The tribe prefers Dakota, Lakota, or Nakota depending on which dialect they speak.

Very interesting. I am in celtic paganism, and while I am not in national indentity movement, I am often disturbed by how celtism has become a selling culture : jewels, cosplay-like cloathing, false pointed ears... Most of the times those people ignore political tense with celtic culture among the UK, the divided Irland. Nobody talked much about Norse Mythology, which I found much more interesting. Later in life, I've found a lot of groups into Nordic culture are also racist, sexist, and homophobic. And also, many of these groups believe that only people with Scandinavian genes are allowed to partake in the celebration of this rich and wondrous ancient culture. Glad to hear from someone like you.

I come from a similar background- born 1974 American. Wow- back in the 80s, mythology, knight, and barbarian based fantasy shows were all the rage and are making a comeback. I was fascinated beyond belief. You may or may not be interested in a show that puts its own fictional spin on yesteryears' myths and religions rearing their heads in America , and it's called American Gods. Neil Gaiman wrote the original novel (which is very good) and he worked closely with the producers of the cable series. Of course Odin is in it, but also Anansi, Thot, Anubis, Mad Sweeny (leprechaun like none you've ever stereotyped), Kali, Czernobog, Astora, and others make appearances. It's a fascinating modern take on pagan old world gods of the past trying to stay alive in 2000s America.

Thanks. A lot. You have no idea how much voices against the appropriation of Nordic history and culture by bigots are important. I feared, for almost a decade, exploring my interset in Norse history, mythology and paganism. It was all because racist remarks I have read online, written by antisemitic folkists. As someone who has been raised as an Orthodox Jew, it had scared me in a way that words can't even describe. Only after I met my fiancé (and after that - the local pagan community) I gathered the courage to explore and eventually realize that I feel at home when I worship Heimdall or Freya other than any other religious path. This resistance to bigotry matters, don't ever forget that. For me, it means my personal safety and my ability to grow spiritually without being judged for my origins. Who knows how many people with a similar story to mine are out there.

Not tolerating intolerance is still intolerance, just intolerance with sugar coating. The truth of reality is that everything which lives has group preference, from dogs to humans. There is not a sacrosanct position which excludes one from "intolerance". So instead of content creators morally patronizing their audience with their opinion on a subject which defames others who are "intolerant" from their vantage, maybe they themselves should look in the mirror, honestly, and see that their egalitarianism is intolerance of native essentialism.

This is my first video of yours I have seen and I thoroughly enjoyed this. (Subscribed!) You gave me a lot to think about as an American. When you spoke about the globalization of culture exploration causing humans to appreciate and appropriate other cultures is fascinating. I can’t speak of other countries peoples but I feel some Americans (I speak for Caucasians) might look for and identify with other cultures out of a lack of understanding their own roots and ancestry. Many of our ancestries were lost because of bad record keeping in the beginning of our nation. We originate from so many places. But we live in a time so close to the countries origins that even if we are “Americans” we know this is not where the large majority of us came from. My lineage for example is lost by missing records during the first 100 years of America on either side. My family are mutts and there are only family rumors of origins that are vague. “We may be part Irish, part English, part Cherokee, part Blackfoot and part German.” This is a simplified version of what I’ve been told. Often it’s more like you get this “physical feature” from this lineage kind of thing or there is rumor that we had this cultural relative. But no evidence or validity. And my surname is Holland but that’s just my fathers side. There is a loss of ancestral identity for us. I can’t help but wonder if this, along with our lack of community (belonging), feeds into any of our right wing extremists issues at all or at minimum contributes to the appropriation of cultures we want to identify with to give ourselves this need to know where we come from. I must admit that I have always felt drawn towards Nordic countries and Viking history but I have no knowledge if I have any ancestry. But perhaps I do identify specifically with the Nordic because I have blonde hair (with random red hairs) and blue eyes. So aside from being short, I feel like maybe that’s part of where I come from. 🤷‍♀️😂 But it seems to come from a place of wanting to belong and know my actual “culture” or “motherland/fatherland” (these words first appeared in the American English dictionary in 1847.) I sure know that I don’t like identifying with my American culture which is wrought with chaos from its beginning and lacks a cohesive sense of belonging for anyone because we have always been such a divisive country. Not to mention that I’m ashamed of my known American ancestors being from the south. This makes me want to find an ancestry further back that I can feel connected to and be proud of. Anyways, thank you for the informative video and good for thought! 🙏Would love to hear your thoughts on this and I wonder if this topic has been discussed by anyone. I will have to Google it now. 😁

But to be honest, if your heritage is from anywhere in North West Europe, you probably would have at least some Norse ancestry, because in the Viking age, people from Scandinavia settled all over the place - England, Ireland, Scotland, France and elsewhere. So you likely would have at least some ancestry from there, even if only in small percentage.

Interesting post, but two points. 1) The Vikings were involved in trading slaves. 2) There were plenty of white Southerners at the time, and still are, who wanted nothing to do with slavery and its aftermath. So don’t worry. As long as your own conscience is clear, you’re fine.

I am glad to see you make it clear that you do not want the support of the far right as they do spoil it for everyone else. Not only is it the case that there are people with extreme views drawn to the subject but it has had the effect of making some people who have a genuine interest in the subject mater overly focused on the far right to the extent that they apparently not only don't tolerate bigotry but seem to feel the need to apologise for something they are not even guilty of. Which puts the focus on the negative and almost seams to accept the concept that part of history and some symbols can be ceded to an unpleasant minority.

I see a lot of people commenting thinking this video is about politics or Arith expressing his political views. That shows how out of reality people are in relation to both historical facts of our own time and politics themselves. This video is about facts, both historical and current facts as every day history is being made. This is not a political video, this is a video of awareness concerning the history of white supremacy and the use of nordic symbols by such people in our modern days. Put simply, to gain clout. The Aeneid gives Rome a glorious (if falsified) past in the burning ruins of Troy. When Rome became great and died, others did the same - magnifying their roman heritage where they could, falsifying it where they could not. A similar process happened to biblical subjects upon christianization. When archeology started coming into it's own and people started uncovering the old cultures of their ancestors, of course they were to be portrayed as another great age since passed, conveniently providing a pedigree of majesty to the nations who now inhabited the land. And just as before, what could not be proven to be great was made great by hook or by crook. The only difference this time around was that the racial tones of that greatness were emphasized because of the spirit of the age. This method of historical justification has since fallen out of fashion, restricting it's adherents to, well, rather niche communities.

I'm not sure why it is so difficult to treat people with love and kindness, no matter where they come from, or what color they are. Intolerance should only happen to people who are murderers, rapists, etc. Intolerance should only happen to those who gleefully appreciate shitting on others because of where they come from, their color, or their innocent and personal beliefs that aren't injuring others. Those instances should NOT be tolerated, and those people should be educated or corrected. Why is that hard to understand for some? I saw Northman it was a Viking rehash of Hamlet without Shakespeare speeches. Only has 2 scenes of shaman rituals and Baltic folk medicine in it too for the Ophelia typed character is Slav or Baltic … I missed her characters distinction. It would be interesting if you see those scenes and interpret that. It seemed to me more a vehicle in the movie to drive a sense of ill fated destiny in the plot just like Hamlet did.

Thank you so much for this, and as a political scientist with a lot of philosophy, history, sociology, and psychology in my training, Arith's explanations of the phenomenon are on point. There seems to always be a tension between those that focus on the exoteric and those that focus on the esoteric concerning spirituality. It has always fascinated me that when I focus on the esoteric and mystical aspects of spirit, I find the forms and symbols to be near universal, if not completely universal (sorta the point I suppose). It is when the exoteric is the focus that ideas about unique cultural supremacy and fear of other emerge. I actually do tend to be an optimist however concerning the potential of global communications. Stupid can and does spread, but so does love and understanding. As long as we do not bomb ourselves back to the iron age, this unified world will only reify itself.

Brilliantly spoken my friend. I also think is a great conversation that SHOULD be made clear. Some of us really enjoy history and folklore that later influence part of our present society. That aren't here for any hate!!! Just want to learn.

" about unique cultural supremacy and fear of other emerge. " That sounds an awful lot like psychological projection. With "multiculturalism" being a totalistic ideology and it fostering the fear/hate of native Europeans who dare to stand against it.
