Intro reminded me of a fun fact: In the cartoon "Dexter's Laboratory", there's a recurring character named Val Halen. He's a cross between Thor and guitarist Eddie Van Halen. His wields a "mighty axe", which is both an axe and a guitar.

Thank you so much for this and the following videos to be made on Thor. He is a diety I have had a great interest in beyond the surface level, but cannot find many resources with that information. Ironically I used to avoid veneration of Thor because of the cultural ties to Marvel, but I suppose these are the woes of an uniformed convert.

It occurred to me that your interpretation of "Loki's stealing then replacing of Sif's hair" could have other interpretations.... As you were telling it, I immediately came up with my own interpretation (based on other myths from other cultures along with farming practices employed since prehistoric times). My (intuitive) interpretation: After the harvest, the plant bodies still remain on the land, but then the FARMERS purposely burn the remnants of the crops leaving the land scorched and barren, but in doing so, they assure a beautiful harvest for the next year. If you simply leave the leftover plants to decompose, there sure could be benefits from the compost, but sometimes it also gives shelter to pests and diseases that wait out the winter to feast on next season's crop. So, burning it offers the best option (in many cases). As you said later in the vid, Sif's golden hair is symbolic of a bountiful harvest. Hey, I'm new to the channel and am loving it. Having an Icelandic mother, I am hungry to understand my own heritage better (than my own mother does)... 😃

I'm an eclectic pagan on a left-and path that includes Norse influence among others (when you're of Scottish/Irish/French/German ancestry living on Turtle Island, you kinda have to do it that way bc so many of those pagan traditions are land-based/folk practices and thus I can't practice them here, plus I can't find anything about Scottish pagan practice at all here so... 🤷). It's so nice to get an objective view of religion. So hard to find 😅

I wish I could have had access to information like this in the mid 60's. I was limited to articles in National Geographic, & occasional school book articles. I wanted to find my viking heritage (Norwegian, Dalehefte). My uncle Olaf I only met twice, & my grandfather Gottfred I only spoke to maybe 10 times. Family history was not a subject of conversation in the family.

Very well done brother Arith! It left me hungry for more though.

Such a fantastic analysis and scrutiny. I wonder if Heimdallr too is associated with a more ancient and profound Norse mythological platform because of his somehow vague and specific maternal lineage. I think there can be some interactions between him and Thor as rainbow and rain/thunder could be put together in the fertility category.

Yes, Heimdall is a particularly hard one to study in terms of the pagan associations related to this deity. It's hard because in Snorri's version of Ragnarök Heimdall actually plays the role of the Archangel Michael; on that one Snorri didn't even bothered and it's quite clear the Christian associations. However, and fortunately, there are other works of literature, kennings and Skaldic poetry. There's much to tell about Heimdall as being one of the ancestors of humanity, but perhaps most especially is his relation to the number 9 and his 9 mothers, which again gives us an indication of his connection to magic and creational-powers. Some people like to use Heimdall for their far-right political ideologies because Heimdall in the sources is described as being white, although colours in Old Norse myths in relation to deities is never in relation to ethnicity but rather easy colour-associations with the functions and attributes of deities. White is in reference to wool. Heimdall is related to wool as a much needed product to make clothing but also rich garments, and related to sheep, goats and especially the ram. I'll explore Heimdall some day, and also the rainbow bridge concept, which is closely associated with the rainbow-serpent the "shaman" rides into the Otherworld, attested in many Eurasian animistic mythologies.

I'm actually living in a city named Thorigny (Ignis in Latin means lighting a fire) so it's something like ''the fire of thor''. Actually there's a large number of Thorigny in France, I'm in Thorigny ''sur Marne'' Marne is a river, it's gallo-roman name is Matrona, the mother goddess in other words. pretty amazing for an introduction, i would highly recommend this to anyone with an interest in thor or norse mythology. i cam away from this feeling as if i knew far more than before, especially about the history. oddly enough, i have been watching jackson crawford and he said that loki was not actually a god of fire, i don't know whether this is right or not

I understand why Jackson Crawford says that, and he isn't wrong if we only look at the etymological roots of Loki, which is what he has done. His argument is that people have made the common error of equating Loki and Logi, and as such the common misconception is that Loki is a god of fire because of the similarities in name with Logi. This argument isn't wrong; indeed, etymologically speaking, Loki (Danish: Loke) and Logi do not have the same etymological roots. However, that's not how mythologies and folklore works. It's not about the root of languages, but instead about purposely creating sound-similarities to help making easy associations and remembering content in oral tradition. And I repeat: "sound-similarities in oral tradition", nothing to do with linguistic roots. This is all over every world-mythology. Loki and Logi sound similar, because they are meant to sound similar, to create an easy association and remembering the cultural and traditional content in the myths. Jackson Crawford, in my opinion, is one of the very best we have nowadays on the field of Old Norse language, but his field isn't archaeology, history, neither mythologies nor folk traditions, and he knows that, and we know that. So we do have to be careful were and why we place some arguments because they might lead to other misconceptions. Loki wasn't a god, he was a trickster spirit, and he was indeed related to fire (among other things); not just and only, but also. To this day in Swedish and Danish folklore Loki is still very much related to fire, heat, summer and the hearth, as he was in the past. I've done a video explaining this and I have placed the bibliography at the end of that video too, entitled "Loki the Trickster Fire Spirit". So it makes sense when the most people go tho him. 48:49 The german word for thunder is Donner, which is very similar to the name. I know the name Donar but have no idea where it is mentioned in sources. If one looks at the stellar constellation of Orion you can see a man with a phallus and also a big club at the same time. The club is part of Orions lower body. I guess they have seen this constellation as Thor.

@@tristanburns82 I am refering especially to the three belt stars Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka in combination to Eta Orionis, M41, M42 and M43. Together they look like a club or a hammer with a too short shaft. In the Prose Edda it is described that Thor's hammer has a shaft that is a little bit too short. We do not know how the norse called the stellar constallatons but not all cultures see the same in them.

I get the hypothesis of her hair being linked to wheat but a lot of people seem to take that as fact and claim her to be a harvest deity, while I can understand this Tom some point I was wondering if there was any other functions she could have served. For all things occult I rely on Odin. I always had issues with runes until I began work with Odin. They were too simple. However through his eyes (or eye) I see that is the awesome part.
