Hvitserk in that scene represents Guthrum who was a viking leader in the battle that took place in real life. After Alfred won the war and made peace with the vikings one of the conditions was that Guthrum got baptized and got the name Althelstan. Guthrum became king of East Anglia and what was called Danelaw

Amazing ending in my opinion, the Hvitsverk ending was open and mysterious so people could theorize, Ivars death was very well done in my opinion, yes he could have got a great fight with Alfred and die like that but it worked well because Ivar was always saying that he is a god and nobody can kill him and in the end a meaningless soldier kills him as an ordinary human and the Ubbe, Floki ending, that was just perfect.

Been with you guys since more or less the beginning. Still one of my favorite show's of all time. I do think that those first 4 seasons were double triple platinum gold diamond etc... After Ragnar, Athelstan and Ecbert left it became substantially less interesting, but they still pushed some incredible moments in these last 2 seasons. I think this finale had a lot of good moments. There were some let downs for sure in these last 2 seasons, but that finale scene at the end of this episode closing it out with Floki and Ubbe on the beach was so reminiscent of early Ragnar. All of his ponderous times sitting in that Bay near his farm staring out and dreaming his dreams. It was a beautiful way to tie those past moments to the present as those two characters , a union between the early days (Floki) and late (Ubbe) sat their philosophizing or perhaps anti - philosophizing. Great way to close it out. I also just loved the whole north America arch this season and disastrous events of Greenland prior. Personally my favorite characters, and boy is it hard to pick after so many incredible year, are: Ragnar Athelstan Ecbert Lagertha Floki Rollo Bjorn Ubbe Ivar Harald Hvitserk Alfred Actually come to think of it there are so many and even the side characters like the Jarls and different queens and kings were super interesting. Honestly makes it too difficult but hey thee is a rough list. Maybe its better to ask who would your top 5 characters be in the whole show? Anyway what an amazing show. You guys were always so fun to watch. Great sense of humor and interesting analysis. I will miss watching you guys trying to predict events and freaking out over this show. I sure hope the spin off is good. All the best. PS? - I would recommend Sons of Anarchy strongly as a great show to get into but I get that that particular flavor of crime show isn't for everyone.

In 937 AD, at the Battle of Brunanburh, led a force drawn from Britain, and defeated an invasion made by the king of Scotland, in alliance with the Welsh and Danes, from Dublin. For Ivar to die that way made perfect sense given his need to be remembered and for his deep love for his brother Hvitserk but never being able to show it. That battle/ death was amazing. I’m glad it wasn’t Alfred who killed him but rather a regular soldier. That makes it all the more real. Glad Hvitserk and Ubbe ended with peace and able to contemplate their futures. A very good depiction of the end of the Viking era. Alfreds actor was just AMAZING. Really gonna miss this show. And note to Dan & Dave- THATS HOW YOU END A SHOW. PLEASE WATCH THE LAST KINGDOM NEXT. So I wasn't disappointed with Hvitserk's ending. But the great Ivar being stabbed by some scared random nobody and crying in the end!? I don't know about that one. Game of Thrones ending was much better, it had focus, good structure and some really good writing, i think Vikings didn't really knew what it wanted to do by the end of it, season 8 of GOT had 3 episodes focusing on the Battle of Winterfell and 3 episodes focusing on Daenerys taking King's Landing, they knew where they wanted to go, what they wanted to do with the series, liking or not. Vikings last season just feels messy and desorganized for me.

Honestly, I'm disappointed we only got 4 episodes of Alfred this whole season. What was the whole point of the Rus storyline? I would have preferred to see more of Wessex in this last season but who am I to judge? It was still good. Great reactions as always!!!

This group always thought they knew better than the actual history, always questioning and/or mocking writing decisions. If I remember it wasn't even until the midway point of season 1 that you realized this was historical fiction. Even to the final episode, questioning the reality of things...that actually happened or were based on actual people. At least you were consistent until the end.

I loved this show but it took such license with actual history that I cringed through most of it. Ivar did not die in England, he died in Dublin and several years before this battle was ever fought. I guess they had to end it somehow but I was not happy with the ending. Ivar also was NOT impotent. Two of his great grandsons were Kings, one in Dublin and one in York. I am sad that this series is over and enjoyed your reactions.

I'm not going to lie, I cried when Ivar died. BUT, I kind of feel like Alfred should have been the one, to kill him. It would have made the "Do not be afraid" line, even stronger. I argued with myself which character I loved more, Ragnar or Ivar, a lot. I don't know why Hvitserk was named Athelstan, but, whatever. Ubbe, was spectacular too. What I took away from this, is that Alex Høgh Andersen, is one of the greatest "up-coming" actors.

I liked Ivar's, Hvitserk and Ubbe's ending the only ending I didn't like was Ingrid becoming Queen of Kattegat in the end. I wish we got to see Rollo one last time. King Alfred surviving the series was another good thing to me though I wish we had gotten to see more of him this season.

Cant believe you didn't give a passing mention to the main characters of Ragnor and Lagertha as an end series sum up. Hvitserk was symbolic of the Vikings converting to Christianity. He was lost and like many search using religions -oden,bhudda,christ.but he became a saxon prince and had nothing left in Kattegat for him. Ivar's death was a cheap shot - no way would he ever just let someone stab him. They could have had him being overcome by a group but still killed by a nobody. The battle scenes gave the impression the Vikings were winning with the cross being set aflame (in an age of superstions and fears). The last series was rushed in so many ways ( a bit like GOT) and some of the logic was weird. Then again a lot was weird for the whole series, taking characters from across the Viking age and mixing up events etc etc. Still Ragnor was the best ever character - conflicted, vulnerable, cheeky, fun, cunning, ruthless but lovable and played a great range. But the logic of his disappearnce was pathetic. Considering his only weakness was his children/family, he would never have left them to grow alone for 8/9 years. King Harold was disliked by a lot but he was no worse than any of the other characters (even Rollo was a rapist and bloodthirsty murderer smashing in monks heads etc as well as a traitor who betrayed Ragnor twice but everyone likes him.) King Harold just wanted love above all else and realised his mistakes and lonliness - great actor. The series they should make should be based around Harald Hadrada who fought all the way thru Rus and Byzantine, protecting the emporer as a Vangarian guard then back home to regain power and died at the battle of stampford bridge in 1066. That would show a wider breath of contrasting cultures and interactions along with the religons and plenty of action.

The show struggled after Ragnar but it was supposed to happen. Floki was the best and at least he found peace as the old hermit. Bjorn was perhaps most like Ragnar and imo his true successor.

Season 6, the season of callbacks, much like season 8 of GOT, just the writers going "Remember when this show used to be good? Guys please, we swear it's the same, look, he said the thing that was said back when the show used to be good"

**whispers** The Last Kingdom...please dear gods The Last Kingdom. (Seriously, though, there you'll get the more historically accurate version of the Viking who converted to Christianity and had Alfred as a godfather who renamed him Aethelstan, as Hvitserk actually was in Rus lands and died by being burned alive there, not where the show says he ended up.)

You may not like that ending for Hvitserk, but it's completely in character for him. He's been toying with other religions for a long time, and has never been the strongest believer in the Norse gods. He even toyed with Buddhism for a while. Picking up Christianity is not out of character if you look at it that way.

11:44 "I like how neither side has a plan, it's just chaos." This is the exact reason I hated this battle lmao. Both leaders are wise in different respects yet their last showing is a blunder. Neither side achieves victory through tactics. It seems like people were waaaay too willing to die for no reason. The smartest thing Alfred did was move his army but then he walked into Ivar's traps and we didn't see him thinking about the battle plan more than that. Then the only reason he won was...Ivar was suicidal all of a sudden and gave up his advantages. There is a better way to put this and it's been months since I watched the episode, but I was just really disappointed. I expected a battle of the minds but I just got action. Alfred vs Ivar should have been half the season or more imo. Also fuck that Native American storyline. That had so much potential for a happy ending and it was ruined by a character who's motivations were completely artificial. No need after what at least I felt was a difficult couple of seasons to get through. Bittersweet ending? Nah give me my reward for sitting through some of these storylines. Sorry for the rant lmao

Exactly. They foreshadowed the encounter of Alfred vs Ivar being a great chess match between the two, but there was barely any strategizing involved. Probably couldn't fit it into the episodes they had left.

I really liked the ending. I was surprised. I have my gripes, but they ushered in the new world. Not that I’m happy with how that turned out, but there was hope in the beginning. The doubt of their beliefs obviously came true. Not that I’m on board with any religion. Being a slave to Gods never turned out well with any society, including ours. IMOP
