Ойын-сауық

Thrand and Eldgrim start the long awaited Video series on Viking Spear and Shield as well as almost all early period spear use back to the bronze age will be covered in this video series. Do sit back grab an ale or mead wile Thrand demonstrates how to transition from overarm grip to underarm grip with spear and shield. This should prove to be a most interesting series since Spear and shield is one of the most complex and difficult styles to master.

I believe I have the same helmet you do so can you tell me how you attached the straps to it? , and where did you get the shafts for your spears? I went to the hardware store and got a tool handle but its not nearly long enough for a proper spear.

    Just had a thought. How much power can be generated from a spear thrust, two handed vs single hand overarm slide. I'd assume the two handed strike would give more power but I have been proved wrong plenty of times by you demonstrations (the tatami armour was a bit mind blowing, tore my beliefs to shreds) But it would be interesting to see.

    I do agree that the transition feels a bit odd. But then i have only tried it a few times. Same with holding a spear in the over arm grip that feels a bit tiresome to be honest. But i think thats where many makes a misstake by saying "oh t his could not have been done it is to cumbersome, you get tired to easily and similar things" They dont realise that what can feel awkward or cumberson to someone thats not trained does not have to be that hard for someone trained in doing it. And no playing around with some spears now and then is not enough to compare yourself to a well trained fighter

    What about power? In the overarm grip you get power by acceleration. But in the underhandgrip, where is the power there? It is pokey, is it not? Maybe one way to get power is to plant it in the ground against a charging opponent, but it does not seem all that much. What about pinning the spear to your body? So the weight of your body becomes the power? Like a footsoldiers lance? That would be a viable underhand grip. That is not so weak?

  • @baxskopog2375

    If you were in a formation wouldn't the primary grip be more like holding it at the back of the spear balanced under your forearm in order to maximize reach?

  • @Thrand11

    @Thrand11

    8 жыл бұрын

    You have maximum reach and power with the overarm throwing slide and we have proved it can pierce early Greek bronze armor and later century maille armor. The under-grip you speak of is used in modern reenactment to spear fence for safety, control and of course reach in circumstance. If one slips in between spear points rushing wall wile using underarm in the lance grip potions for reach on is forced run backwards breaking the formation or attempt to choke up quickly and can not attack the close attacker in his face easily. This is based on old artwork from ancient to late century maille eras. Here is a playlist you will find the overarm throwing slide has more reach versatility and power we will cover it all in this series. Mobility, easier to carry, easier to transport. remember that even for a warrior that went out to a battle 99% of the time or even more he would just carry his weapons and shield, not use it. So something as simple as "it would be easier to carry around" can be a valid thing.

  • @HansThalhoffer
    @HansThalhoffer8 жыл бұрын

    I would not say that you can't do the transition the way you promote it. I just say, it is not very useful in my opinion. Try it in speed while running criss-cross, stop and run on bad ground, or on horseback or in a fight. I did some experiments with some groups - not only my own, but on workshops as well. They really often dropped the spear by using this way of transition (even it is already better what others used). They nearly always dropped it, when the spear got hit during transition - by accident in running in a group or by purpose in sparring. So yes, you can do it, but the chances you will lose your weapon just by changing the position is not very satisfying. There is a safer way but it takes some time and is less cool. It is puts the spear under one of the arms for transition - shield or weapon arm - both are valid. While it is there you are not helpless - there are a lot of things you can do with the spear under the arm (with the spear head or foot). In the Beatus-Rylands-Latin, Ms8 138v, Beatus of Liébana (ca. 750-798), manuscript dated to ca. 1175 - you find the version under the weapon arm. Thanks for your great videos. I love them.

    There's definitely enough evidence to shuggest that both overarm and underarm (even the "couched" grip) were used in the middle ages. Manuscript Miniatures even has a couple of drawings which show overarm and underarm folks who have managed to put aside their differences and work together. manuscriptminiatures.com/5832/22741/

    kinda hard to hold anything steady when one is the entire film production staff. camera operator and grip and gaff and boom operator and editor and so on. but hey whatever I am supposed to be perfect right? I think that range is the most important factor with a spear, so underhand would have been the dominant stance. But overhand would have been important if the enemy has closed the distance.

  • @reddokkfheg9443

    @reddokkfheg9443

    8 жыл бұрын

    But you dont really get longer range with underhand grip. the difference is very small. With slidign technique you will have about same reach And also try to use underarm grip in a tight shield formation. It can be done but you will be much more limited than with the overhand. if you have stuck your spear out you will find it really hard to pull it back as you have people standing behind you. So with overhand you haev about the same reach. But you can manouver the spear better in a formation.

  • @EdricoftheWeald

    @EdricoftheWeald

    8 жыл бұрын

    Reddokk Fheg Well with the underhand you can hold the spear right near the back, with your elbow stabilising against it. This puts almost all of the length toward the enemy. With overhand this is too clumsy to do.

  • @reddokkfheg9443

    @reddokkfheg9443

    8 жыл бұрын

    ***** true but if you do that in a formation you will have a hard time pull the spear back as the back with hit the people behind you. if you manage to get it in between the two guys behind you, you are very very limited in movement you can only thrust straight forward not to the sides. And with your spear sticking out far beyond your shiled you give the oponents a perfect invite to either attack it or grab it or in any other way lock it or such things With over hand you can hold the spear fairly close to the head so nothing of the spear sticks out infront of your shield untill you attack and with the sliding attack you have pretty much the same reach, it will hit harder and penetrate better. then you can pull it back and again have it behind your shield out of reach for the enemy. You can attack to the sides a lot better to. Both grips where absolutley used, in different situations. but i dont think range was what decided it as you can attack at pretty much same range with overhand grip and you. as far as i can see in a formation the overhand grip would be more usefull and more used than underarm grip. Range is about same. you have more power in the attack, You can attack better to the sides. you can over all move and manouver the spear much more freely in a formation when using overhand But of course the underarm grip was used to. it all comes down to context

  • @reddokkfheg9443

    @reddokkfheg9443

    8 жыл бұрын

    ***** Oh and another thing, with the underhand grip you have to open up the shield wall. an opening where you can stick out the spear between each shiled. leaving an opening for the enemy to attack. and also only having that small opening for the spear you get even more limited, you wont be able to attack anyting on your sides, you can basicly only thrust straight forward With overhand you attack over the shields and you can have them overlapping each other leaving an intackt shield wall with no openings

  • @EdricoftheWeald

    @EdricoftheWeald

    8 жыл бұрын

    Reddokk Fheg The openings between the shields is a good point. But I still think the advantage of reach is the whole purpose of spears. Otherwise you might as well use a short weapon. This advantage is also its main disadvantage - if the enemy gets past the spearhead, you'll need to change tactics immediately. But this is difficult when there are many spears, which is why spears are meant to be used by large formations. But if the opposing formations were to get too close, I agree that overhand would be much preferable - shorter reach and able to strike over the enemy shields.
