It sounds like someone poured steaming hot water on him right before the "one".

Okay me and my friends were dying over this clip and we decided to read about the guy on Wikipedia. It turns out that in 2004 he was discovered to be a Hungarian state informer. That’s hilarious on his own, but we listened again and were theorizing what/why/how this guy made this sound and my friend said “maybe there was somebody in the audience holding a sign saying ‘I know that you’re a state informant’”,and we all collapsed from laughter

He was an informant to the secret police at the time. The irony of this is beyond words.

This is why I love musical theatre

At least he's passionate about his role...?

Just to clarify it: he was doing it intentionally. He is a rock baritone (a quite famous Hungarian rock singer from the 80’s) and he knew he wouldn’t be able to hit the note. So the director asked him to scream instead. Quite funny though😀

He 's actually one of the greatest Jean Valjean (He's originally a rock singer). Of course the microphone couldn't capture the whole essence of that screming. But it makes sanse. Here, Valjean gave up his new life as mayor. It's a really powerful and meaningful scream. (Belive me the better audio quality help a lot)
