I think I may have accidentally created a virus like that. I created an infinitely recursive program that sends a message to the console each iteration to see what would happen, and it ended up creating hundreds of identical error messages. My computer ended up freezing and I had to restart it by pressing the button on the computer itself.

According to someone in the comments, it's from the old Kaspersky Antivirus. One of the programs Joel downloaded must have reused that sound effect.

This virus seems pretty similar to the old DOS and Windows 9x viruses. Instead of holding your files for ransom or just deleting System32, instead it's designed to be annoying and mess with you.

I agree! Modern ransomwares are so uninspired and lame compared to the DOS viruses of old that had more fun at your expense than being straight up malicious. And even malicious ones tended to have some interesting flare in them, like LSD or Casino.

I find it quite amazing they managed to make the screen look like it got cracked by somebody. I saw that a lot when I worked in IT for a college - laptops with busted screens that looked exactly like 17:26

I want to applaud personally, the author of this masterpiece.

This reminds me of when we used to write batch files back on the high school library computers that would open and close the disc trays every 5 seconds. We replaced the internet explorer icons with our batch files and had a heck of a lot of fun!
