Reminds me about the old timer being shown a fantastic piece of engineering kit that was accurate to 0.01mm. Not impressed, the old timer said "In our day, we had to be spot on". :-)

I would highly recommend taking a piece of the plastic, a foot square or so, you are welding around and light it to see how it burns. I know some like visqueen will burn with an invisible flame. You get no clue until the whole structure is involved and liquid plastic is dripping on you. Doesn't take much to light it off either.

Paint helps some, but once the aluminum oxidizes, it pretty much protects itself. Most aluminum boats up there are not painted. Their other boat, Fish Tale, looks pretty good unpainted and it’s a lot easier to inspect for corrosion. It’s difficult to get paint to adhere to aluminum. Also, the time and expense in prep, paint, materials and the additional weight are factors to consider. I own a 2003 Tracker Tundra 20’ epoxy-painted aluminum (6061) boat, operated only in fresh water, garaged, and a few areas of the paint have peeled, scratched, scuffed, and filliform corrosion has occurred under the paint around holes and next to the carpet. You can see where I’ve sanded, repaired and repainted those areas.

Reelmoody is spot on about everything. Painted aluminum does not hold up and requires maintence to keep coorosion from forming under the paint. We put the bulwarks on thr Fish Tale back in 2016 and apart from light corrosion around boltholes is like new!
