Hi, I have just bought sony s7riii and some lens prime lens like Sony 50mm and Sony 35mm, Samyang 14 mm. what other lenses would you recommend? I 've shot with canon 350d and stop shooting but came back to photograph, It was a big jump but I love the camera a lot to learn, I like landscape and so on what do you think and what lens would you recommend and love the video.

Congrats on the purchase. I love the 85 for portraits, the 100-400 is amazing and more versatile than you might think. And the 24-105 is an easy choice for general travel , walk around and landscape. Hope that helps.

My plan is to bring the 24-105, 85mm, 35 2.8 I am on the fence about the 12-24 brining it.. I mainly shoot photos, looking to document the trip. Portraits of locals, landscapes, food.

I shot some video from the back of bikes in Cambodia - was a blast but we were out in the country on little roads. I am not sure i would be excited about shooting photos - everything is happening fast that between focus, shutter speed and staying on the bike - you might find it challenging to capture anything exciting. Get a ride, get some video but focus on getting photos off the bike.

Interesting video. I also went for the Sony a7riii as you have the choise of a lightweight combination when required or a heavier 2.8 lens when carrying is not such an issue. On the lightroom / laptop issue I have found the latest update runs slower on my desktop pc than it did before the upgrade. The wait on every edit to take effect wasn't there before.

  • @photorectoby

    @photorectoby

For me it wasn't even the edit wait - it's the wait when moving between images in library module - you watch the histogram change for the new image and then a full several seconds later the new image appears. Not good.

I sympathize with your problems with editing on the Surface Pro. My son bought a budget windows laptop in December and I tried to use it to edit some photos in Lightroom, and it was also painfully slow. Even importing photos would take forever and forget building any previews. As soon as he installed some games on it, it became unusable and was sent back to B&H. He got a Macbook Air instead. I haven't compared the specs of the 2, but the Macbook definitely outperforms the windows laptop. (It did cost more of course) I admit it was not an expensive laptop that we expected to have great performance, but it should at least work! My conclusion is that Windows 10 it too processor intensive and basically anything else that you try to do on it, be prepared to wait. That's after waiting (and waiting) for Windows 10 to start up...

I too am interested in your thoughts on the Gnarbox. It is quite pricey, but I think one of it's features is supposed to act as a recognizable drive or folder from within Lightroom mobile that would allow you to edit photos without importing them into the camera roll on an iPad? Or something like that? I've tried a similar wireless drive from Kingston - Mobilite - but it was a bit flakey, so am looking for alternative. Thanks for the video, Toby!

Anywhere you photograph in Viet Nam is awesome!! I am just an amateur, I have been into photography since my first camera, Canon AE-1 Program film camera many years ago!! I don't understand most of the reasons for editing, I just have CS4 on my computers. I have been to Viet Nam 3 times, a month for each of the last 3 years. My first year I took my Canon T3i and Canon 18-55mm and 75-300mm lenses. Second year I had my T5i with my Tamron 16-300mm lens. Third year I had my 80D with the Tamron 16-300mm lens, this next year I am looking forward to my 80D with my Tamron 18-400mm lens. I will also take my Canon 1DmkIV with a Tamron 28-300mm lens. I have my Dell 7378 2in1 laptop/convertible with 16Gb (soon I hope to set 32GB in it) RAM and 500Gb SSD. I carry a 2Tb portable drive too. I carry a 26800mAh powerbank for my phones and a 27000 powerbank with a 3 prong plug for my laptop (it also has 2 USB and a type C charging ports). With spare batteries and chargers for both camera and other small items, my backpack weighs 31lbs. Like I say, about the only thing I use photoshop for is to mark my signature on the photo. I do like to see videos and read comments on what others do and think is important. Great video, I am sorry for the long comment, hehe my backpack is a little heavy, but it is not too bad.

I used an Instax camera in Sierra Leone for the Givephotos project (@givephotos/@journeywithoutend on IG) and it was one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had in terms of photography. People can be suspicious of cameras because they think you may be exploiting them. They only see the image of themselves for a fleeting moment whilst the photographer keeps it forever, potentially benefiting financially. However when you give them the print, you balance out the interaction between the photographer and the subject, and you create a material bond between each other. It's a very powerful tool to connect with people (and to get all the kids from the village running after you for prints). I would argue that although the time to develop is the same, the Fuji prints have a stronger impact on people precisely because the image is not immediate. You don't fiddle around with Bluetooth but instead give the people the photo at the beginning of the process and watch it reveal in front of their eyes. The moment of wonder when their face appears out of nowhere is a perfect opportunity for another photo as well. I did regret not having the opportunity to keep a copy of the original photo because either I would have to ask them for two photos with different cameras, or they would be too busy with their print for a proper portrait, but the Instax printer or Square camera might offer a solution to that.

iPad Pro changed everything for me. So damn fast. I also learned how to use PS Fix and Mix. I was amazed at what all those programs could do bc I’ve completely ignored them in the past. I can easily drop skies into photos, clone stamp, blur backgrounds, swap heads, and use brushes etc.. so I’ve just gone to IPad Pro with My Passport Wireless Pro hd when I travel. Really enjoy it! However I shoot m43 so my RAW files are tiny compared to yours.

  • @bguerre1ro

SPDTDL How can you work with hundreds of raw photos on an iPad? I guess you upload the raw photos into the camera roll, do some culling, select your favourites, create albums and then edit them one by one with Affinity or similar. However, the iPad only has 512GB of storage so you surely can’t be away from your laptop/desktop for too long. I am not counting iCloud or similar because there’s usually no internet in remote locations. I’ve recently spent a week in Tenerife with only my camera and one 128GB SD card. No iPad or laptop so I was a bit worried with my card potentially getting full. It was OK in the end but I came back with 3000 photos. If I was to go on a longer holiday, the SD card or even an iPad with 512GB wouldn’t have been enough. I still think that the iPad has great potential but the file system is limiting so your thoughts on raw editing would be much appreciated.

Bruno Guerreiro I use the WD My Passport wireless hard drive. I have the 2TB version and it keeps my photos on it then I edit in LR. If you don’t have room you can do all of your culling on the hard drive, edit in LR one at a time, then store in cloud or back on the hard drive.

I had a feeling right at the beginning of the video that the Surface will be the nly disappointment. I think it’s mostly Adobe’s fault with Lightroom being close to uselessly slow even on a nuclear powerplant type of PC... OK, the recent update made it a little bit more usable, but there is still room for improvement there. So sorry you had this bad experience with it, as the concept of the device is really awesome!

I appreciate the comments about the surface, I have been considering purchasing one but had significant reservations about the Lightroom performance. First up I am a Windows and Android user, I have a pathological fear of Apple products LOL :). This started when our non Apple household won an Ipad in a competition, I was astounded 3 minutes after turning it on that an expensive high end device couldn’t even drag and drop photos from my laptop directly to the Ipad. I was stunned, flabbergasted and had just re-affirmed my dislike of the Big Apple. The Ipad is now the flight screen for my Phantom, great & awesome for this but it is useless for anything else. As suspected it look like the Surface is useless at editing, clearly another $3000.00 product worth $400.00 at most. Looks like we are both still waiting on a mobile solution. When will both sides of the camp deliver on their promises ???. Neither side can keep demanding high end $$ for high end products but delivering S#*t.

Great video, as usual. I do not know if you see my comment, but I am going to assume not because I continue to have this issue. When you are speaking, the beginning of your sentences start out with you enunciating and articulating very well but towards the end of your sentence you do not enunciate and articulate as well and your projection at times is honestly quite poor so it just sounds like you are mumbling. Additionally, the sound levels on your video are quite drastically lower than every thing on KZread and almost everything I come across which does not aid the first issue; the only time I encounter sound levels so low is when I am listening to old recordings or poorly made recordings. As this is neither an old recording nor are your videos poorly made, I hope that you rectify both the projection, enunciation, and articulation unevenness as well as the rather low sound levels. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoy your content and your perspective.

Your 15" MBP has a quad-core CPU. If you went i7 that's 8 threads. Surfaces uses mobile CPUs so even with an i7 that's still only 4 threads and the clock speed on each of those is going to be slower. Adobe can say what they want but their software is horribly optimized and on lower-power machines it shows HARD. The simple truth is that the only way to really make the kinds of software we use faster is to throw more hardware at the problem and there aren't many 13" devices with quad-core CPUs. The real trick is to look for gaming laptops as they can occasionally have full desktop CPUs. They'll run warm and the battery life won't be great, but performance is going to crush everything else.

Sorry to say, you are a nice guy, but I didn't see the point of this video. I mean, Sony A7r3 is like 4 months old already. It earned all the awards and superlatives from all people. If we open every video from you just to hear another ode of glory to the Sony, without some mind blowing images to support what you state, it is redundant and pointless. I mean, seriously, the images are from ok to nice, I am talking mostly about portraits. You show a person like 30 feet away, almost full body, and you explain us how fabulous the eye detection is. How do we know that, why would we care, that is an image that you could have taken with a Nikon D5600. Or with your Gh5, for that matter. In fact, ALL the pictures that you shown us could have been taken with the GH5 or any other camera.
