Your budget is about four times what a middle-class local would spend. Your spotless serviced apartment in a resort-like property is way out of reach of most Vietnamese. Even factoring in the evil reality of “foreigner prices” (a foreigner in Vietnam will always pay more for everything), you should be able to get a decent, furnished air-con apartment that maybe looks a little lived-in for $200. Also, no one in Vietnam who wants to live on a budget should ever set foot in a Western-style supermarket. Everything can be had cheaper in neighbourhood markets and shops. You can also eat in locally-oriented restaurants for $2 to $6 per person per meal. There is a lot more available than noodles and banh mi at one end or pricey Western restaurants at the other. Anyone thinking of living there for a year or more might also want to consider buying a used motorbike for $500 or $600 rather than renting. Finally, since you aren’t working apparently and are out being active everyday, it seems that gyms and protein powders are something most people could do without. But at least you are spending your money on that and not on masses of beers like so many expats! I also agree with you 100% about Vietnamese coffee: it’s a daily essential. Fresh juices and smoothies are available everywhere too - super cheap. In short, I could live in Vietnam, with a SO, for closer to $800 per month (and have done so). You are definitely living it up.

We 100% know we paid more to live this way, but it's the way we wanted to and other expats likely would want. We only ever shopped at the local markets, intimidating to begin with, but great in the long run and an awesome cultural experience. We probably should have bought a bike and resold it, if we stayed on a longer visa we probably would have. So yeah, most people could very easily live on a lot lower than $1200, completely agree! All comes down to the lifestyle you want. As for the Coffee - we bought about 1kg to travel with haha

Your brief synopsis was very enlightening do you have any more info, been looking at Thailand but Vietnam looks so clean and unassuming my SS and what I might make as an expat might make living a lil tough in Chiang Mai but I'm thinking in that realm.

Awesome video guys. I have lived in both places as well (Da Nang instead Hoi An) and didn't realize the costs were so similar. I have always thought it was cheaper to live in Vietnam than Thailand. Thanks for the breakdown!

No worries, Will. Chiang Mai is definitely cheaper on the food front, but if you're willing to eat Banh Mi/Mi Quang/Cau Lao/Pho every day you'd probably be cheaper in Vietnam. Thanks!

I pay around $85/month for an apartment here in Viet Nam, utilities included. He's right, it's darn cheap.. though if you still want to live with your western amenities (A/C, Swimming pool, heated water), it will cost a bit more.

Where in Vietnam are you paying around $85 to live in an apartment. I'm looking at apartments in Hanoi and none of them are remotely as cheap as $85. The cheapest one I've found in Hanoi is about $200. What websites, fb group pages and/or other relevant resources would you recommend that I look for to rent out a room or an apartment? Thanks

No worries. Heads up though (can't recall if we stressed it in this one) - Hoi An is haaard to live in. There was no supermarket there, maybe is now, so you had to do local markets, the odd small shop etc aka there is no Maya Mall / Rimping to just get everything perfectly arranged. It's a bit of a shit show. Amazing place though.

Hoi An is a great place to visit but not an ideal place to live in. The weather is so bad in the winter with endless rains and awful floods. The city government doesn’t encourage massive construction which may damage the heritage. You don’t want to see Walmart or McDonalds next to the Buckingham Palace right? I honestly recommend Da Nang which is not far from Hoi An and offers everything you need. Please understand that in Asia things can be different from Australia or New Zealand where you can easily find a McDonald’s store next to a parliament building or throw Her Majesty’s image to the ground and burn it.

Definitely a lot better, we were shocked. Yeah very much pro's and con's for each place, good to visit both and you figure out pretty quick which bits are important to you.

If the costs were similar, I personally think Chiang Mai was overpriced because living in a well known UNESCO World Heritage Site should be costlier. However in reality, living in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hoi An Vietnam is even cheaper than living in Chiang Mai Thailand, which is NOT a UNESCO World Heritage Site. SURPRISINGLY!

Great overview and summation of your expenses guys. I'm jazzed and encouraged. After living in Mexico, Nicaragua, the Philippines, Cambodia and Thailand, I think Vietnam most likely has the MOST to offer. By that, I mean the highest quality of goods, services and infrastructure than anywhere I've been to date for the cost. Your total for 2 people is wonderful for what you get and how you live. Again... well done!

Axl, I can only speak about those other 5 countries I have lived in but since Dane has given their exact expenses for 2 people in this video, it LOOKS like Vietnam is cheaper overall than the others. I will have to go to Vietnam and see for myself, so until then I can only wonder.

We personally think Chiang Mai is the best and cheapest place to live. You can find apartments a lot cheaper than what we pay, then each of the other categories are cheaper and your overall costs will be less, more luxury, more choice, more western.

I've been to Chiang Mai once. I liked it. I've heard there is a certain time of year when the farmers burn their rice paddies and the smoke for miles around is horrendously bad. Is that true? The only other problem I have with Thailand is their visa regulations. VERY strict about leaving the country every 2 or 3 months and if one gets a long-term retirement visa you still have to report in to immigration every 90 days for the rest of your life. Horrible visa rules, no??

I came across your channel while researching our upcoming trip to Hoi An in January and I'm hooked! I've been binge watching all day. You two do a terrific job of filming and editing. I like that you give the names of places and restaurants you try. I stop the vid and pin them on google maps. Your positive attitudes and charming personalities come across very well. Keep vlogging please!

Awesome detailed info man! I’m currently in the process of planning my own budget too for a big move back to Saigon in the next few months, which is probably going to be a bit more expensive compared to Hoi An but there are some of your categories that I don’t spend on so hopefully it will come out to be around $1000-1200. If you guys ever think of going to Saigon again in 2018, I would love to meet up with!

Exciting times ahead! From the travel we've done there and the comments we've had online about this vid it sounds like our costs are pretty in line with Saigon and Hanoi - so you'd be looking about the same. Per person is a lot cheaper though and if you love to just eat local food you could probably lower that cost more than we did!

Haha $800 is nothing. It cost us around $1400 here for a 2 bed room in Melbourne. I know our dollars are weaker but $1 here probably can buy around as much as $1 in USA except for the fruits and vegetables here are way overpriced. But at least we are keeping our farmers happy!

Just don't forget the form of government you'll be living under. If you're into socialism (communism), with all that entails go for it. Just don't get caught saying the wrong thing to the wrong person. From what I understand, the ruling party still keeps their ears to the ground to pick up any winds of discord from the locals.

Really? Spending a few hours a week building and maintaining strong muscles keeps us young, healthy, and able to travel our whole life! It should be a top priority for someone who travels. Those people are probably just projecting their own insecurities. Protein shakes are awesome. 💪

How do you make money though? You move to Thailand and enjoy having everything cheaper but if you work there then your salary will be pretty low.

Thanks Steve, you guys will have a great time. We stayed at Riverside Garden Villas, best to get in touch with the local property agent for the area called Nha Toi real estate, also get into the Hoi An Expats Facebook group to keep an eye on some prices from more local offerings with no agent.

Thank you very much for that informative video I am retired American and I would like very much to return to Vietnam I would like to go around the Vung Tau area. But I really like that apartment that you were staying in especially if I can get one on the ground floor because it's easier for me at my age and I would have no problem running a motorbike and exploring I would enjoy that very much. I would like to spend approximately 3 to 4 months in Vietnam and then go to Thailand for 3 to 4 months. I would also possibly be interested in going to Bali but I've heard it's gotten quite expensive there. Thank you again for posting that and I will most definitely follow your post

Saw a lot of American veterans moved back to VN to reunite with their friends over there. I saw in some videos that they would go out and drink coffees while chit chatting just like the old days. If you want to marry a Vietnamese woman then i wish you luck. But please, pick the right partner with not much of an age gap. Please, don’t turn VN unto Thailand. Its a place to raise a good family instead.

Anyways I just finished my iOS Coding Bootcamp and looking to do some freelance/contract work and work remotely to be with my girlfriend in Vietnam. Wow thats actually crazy, that was just a fleeting holiday back then and we had no idea what we were doing 😜

I was hoping you'd make a video like this one, really useful. Thank you! Still torn between the 2 places. What's making me lean a bit more towards Hoi An is the fact that I already have a friend in Mui Ne, with whom I would stay a week or 2 to get myself a bit accustomed. And the fact that I do not drive, nor do I desire to learn. Another thing I noticed is that there is so much toxicity in CM expat facebook groups, compared to Hoi An/Da Nang wherein there is rarely any drama and the locals are much more engaged and everybody is just having fun. You are lurking in both so am I just imagining things?

sheba021 There's only drama in CM if you mix with people like that. I've lived here for 4 months and I don't hang with "digital nomads". There's so many different kinds of people here that it's not hard to stay clear of drama.

+sheba021 Thanks, we're glad it's helpful :) Honestly in any 'digital nomad' specific group there is the tenancy for it to be a bit toxic and negative, which is honestly such a shame. The flip side is Hoi An/Danang groups are expats, they're often older, more relaxed and open to other people having an opinion and sharing their general experiences. Don't let the CM group put you off though, it is an awesome place! As +DearJRenae said you can pick who you hang out with and 99% of the people there are cool anyway. Even with a friend in Nui Ne I would still say Chiang Mai is easier to settle. Get an apartment day 1 easily, supermarket in walking distance, food options everywhere regardless where you live - it's not that simple in Hoi An sadly but it is a great place!

I won't be put off from coming to CM by something so trivial, I am just curious. :) I am from one of the poorest countries in Europe where the majority of people cope with $200-250 a month and are by and large depressed and miserable. Which is what I used to do for 30+ years until I got a lucky break with online video editing, and am now looking to get away from all of that. So from my perspective escaping the rat race and working remotely from an amazing place such as Thailand literally seems like beating the game. So I can't really comprehend the negativity. Anyways, thanks for the time to write all of this, I really appreciate it. I wish you guys all the best with your future travels, and if you ever pass through Novi Sad in Serbia during your Euro travels hit me up, I would love to meet for a beer and show you around! I wont be moving to SEA for at least a year.

My boyfriend and I are beginning our journey from Sweden to Thailand in 3 weeks. I would love to see a video about SIM cards, for example we're wondering how we can keep a phone number to contact people but keep the price low, as well as more info about data, the total cost, how to get the SIM card, what to do when you enter a new country, etc... we're just a little lost! =)

Hey guys - excited for you starting your journey! Don't stress over phones, it's easy everywhere in South East Asia. In Thailand you will need to take your passport though, your best option is to go with AIS because in the larger cities they also have wifi hotspots you can use in cafes and public places so you always will have good laptop wifi as well. Find out Chiang Mai cost of living video and we talk about costs of phone, but it is very cheap and you get 5gb or so easily.

Still Thailand man .I was all over Issan for 5 months . Can't compare to vietnam . I now live in Rayong ..seriously thinking about a move ..on my way there next week ....

How is the quality of life in these parts of the world ? I know that's a pretty vague question however i hear a lot of Americans living in Countries such as Indonesia/Spain/Hong Kong/Malaysia etc seem to be happy and can live off $1,000 a month rent/food etc. No way that would be possible in the USA What do they do for work? Majority of them life off savings? Jobs are not easy to come across i always use to hear about retired people doing this they are on a fixed income social security etc but more and more young people 20-40 year old's are leaving the USA and living in these areas.

Glad it was helpful. This was just a one bedroom studio type place and shared internet was included, but inconsistent at times. Its an old video but there was lots of questions at the time in the comments section here.

Actually a useful video, a lot of people miss out all of the small items that add up in the end when making travelling cost videos. It's nice to see that your living a good lifestyle but so cheaply too. Too right that coffee has its own category hah we will see how much more it ends up being in Philippines!

Oh cool! Nha Trangs a nice spot, been a few years since we visited but we enjoyed it there. We're very lucky to be able to live this way of life.

This video has helped a lot even though it's now 2021. It's all relevant and relative. $1200 for 2 people is pretty good.

You really can't talk for Vietnam after being in Hoi an, it's a nice place, but really touristy and the prices have gone up for that reason. You can get some better prices if you go to Cửa Đại on the river side or other places far enough away from the city not to be touristy.

We lived outside the main area of Hoi An because it was so touristy and expensive, but the further out you go the cheaper it gets for sure. For us, we found a great balance between western amenities and local prices, with the option to drive into the touristy spots if we wanted.

@@DanegerAndStacey Was in Vietnam twice , stayed in Long Khan ( close to HCMC) and Vung Tau at first time and second time Went to Quy Nhon , later went to Kontum (Stayed with a Vietnamese family and had great fun) .....Love Coffee ...yummy

A few anomalies in your Chiang Mai figures and standards but no big deal, good work overall 4.5 stars :)

Good stuff mate, Chiang Mai is an awesome spot to base yourself.

We stayed for a month in Hoi An a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. This is an excellent comparison of the cost of living between Thailand and Vietnam. Thailand has a better infrastructure. It's safer, the police force is better. Vietnam is more corrupt. Most people park their motorbikes in the house because they're stolen if not. I think food is better in LOS, although it's close. We also didn't like the number of rats we saw at night. Phuket, where I live is a little more expensive, but it's simply a better place to live. May in Hoi An was ridiculously hot. We'll be staying in Phuket although pollution is becoming a turnoff with poor sewer treatment and construction runoff turning beach water brown. I shared the video on Facebook/The Phuket Sun.

I go to Chiang Mai every year I like chiang mai was laid-back N and many activities to do there is there any other place that you know of Vietnam excetera is comprable to the lifestyle in Chiang Mai I don't party , don't drink I like the Street Markets in as you know you lived in Thailand I like that vibe

What would you recomend for a tourist? Going to Chiang Mai or Vietnam?

Tough decision. For us, we love Thailand and Chiang Mai in particular - but both countries are amazing.

aloha. I ended up back at this video from the link in the PDF of your book (love it, BTW!!!) I was wondering if you totalled up all the airfare of your travels? that part was indeed a big expense for me in 2017. While the "travel lifestyle" that you enjoy would probably be quite similar to the one I'm transitioning into, there will also be at least 2 "flights home" for me back to the US. not a million dollars but certainly several million Dong ;-) I'm guessing flights back to NZ could be on-par with a flight from BKK back to California.. Anyway, thanks for your input on this item... fwiw, my 2017 expenses for airfare were about $12,000 for the year... multiple trips...

Glad you're enjoying! We haven't fully totalled all of our flights, but in our case we plan pretty specific routes based on ease of moving between them (except for when we went from Manila - Taipei - Chiang Mai to work on the book, that was brutal on the wallet). We only go home once a year and will work our way back in that direction, eg Bali, and then book long hauls from there in advance with airpoints and/or sales :)

Brian Pan ah. Yeh, China Southern is fairly inexpensive for my route as well. I go out of SAN or LAX. I've had excellent luck with EVA and the occasional bargaining on ANA

I'm interested to know how Chiang Mai costs compare to other cities within Thailand. Is it generally considered a cheaper or more expensive place than say, Phuket or Bangkok?

I'm in Chiang Mai. Restaurants are 2-3x times cheaper here than in Phuket (fried rice costs 35 bahts). Bangkok is also generally cheaper than Phuket.

+Peter Kelly Chiang Mai is really well priced, Bangkok is super cheap as well. Havent been to Phuket in a few years but sounds like +Filonda has and it's pricier!

Thanks for the overview Daneger & Stacey - just what I was looking for. One thing did pop into my mind while you were comparing with Chiang Mai... air quality. I've been in Thailand for several years now, and go to CM several times year. It is pretty cool place with great food... but it is also crazy congested and the air is toxic - especially in the smoky season. How would Hoi An compare?

No worries. At the time of making this we hadn't experienced the burning in CM yet, going back the following year we did and def didn't enjoy it - now its the worst place in the world. Still love CM the most, but burning season is a no go for us. Hoi An had locals burning crops, so sometimes you'd be in the wrong place, but mostly fine.

Cheers man. We stayed at Riverside Garden Villas, best to get in touch with the local property agent for the area called Nha Toi real estate, also get into the Hoi An Expats Facebook group to keep an eye on some prices from more local offerings with no agent.

Thanks man, the book will help you massively - it's basically what we wish we had before we spent months of our lives trying to figure all of this sh*t out haha. Thailand is a good place to start, take a look at Koh Phangan, its a beach and has some co-working place as well I think but we havent made it down there yet. Otherwise, you could seriously consider Hoi An, but it's tougher to adjust to life there, Danang is a city and has a beach so is sort of the best of both. Thailand is probs the better bet tho.

Great video .would like to know the deal about visas . Thailand became a pain !!! For everyone . 30 days runs , 90 days report for retirement , bank account minimum etc etc ... 2 years now in Thailand , seriously considering a vietnam trip on a retirement finding facts . Was told has grear deals for US citizens . With no hassles as in Thland .

Vietnam is a lot easier on visas vs Thailand - you can have at least a 3 month multi entry before you arrive and have lots more flexibility

Thanks man. Theres no real solid answer, pay the price in the local spots which sucks or in a spot that you can buy in bulk for cheap (aka Vietnam was incredibly cheap for MyProtein) then stock up and travel with it if you have the weight.

Hey Daneger, if you will visit again the Philippines, try to visit Amanpulo. It is like the world's #1 beach. It's kinda expensive though and more private. Also some hollywood actors visit the place already like Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey etc. Try to check it out.

I understand that you cannot go to Thailand and work unless it is teaching English. Is it possible to get a job in Vietnam? What sort of work is available for a Farang/ foreigner/kiwi in both countries? Is the internet reliable in both places? Funny you include a cost for coffee lol, I would have to make my coffee cost a bourbon cost. Do you know any musicians in either country and what sort of money is there for doing gigs assuming I was allowed to? What sort of work do you do to pay for living? Is your vlogging paying for your traveling? Too many questions? How long can you stay in Vietnam? What sort of visa do you need? Ok enough questions

Wow thats a lot of questions Robert haha. First off - every single one of your questions and hundreds more answers can be found here: danegerandstacey.com/travel-full-time ... Internet, OK in both but not great. Best to not work locally and earn your income online instead to be paid in USD/Euros/GBP etc. Musicians and gigs is about zero possibility from what we've seen. We share more of our story in the book as well and have answered in our Q&A videos before. Visas vary depending on the place so dramatically!

We lived in HoiAn for a year and loved it. Soon we are moving to Siem Reap Cambodia to live. Have you been to Myanmar yet.
