Video shows moment Slovak Prime Minister shot multiple times by 71-year-old gunman | BBC News
The Prime Minister of Slovakia has undergone hours of emergency surgery after being shot multiple times while leaving a government meeting and passing through crowds of people in the town of Handlova.
Robert Fico was said to have been stabilised following “life threatening injuries”. It’s reported that five bullets were fired and he was hit in the stomach, arm and leg.
The suspect, a 71-year-old man, was arrested at the scene. Slovak media reports said he had worked as a security guard at a shopping mall and that the attack may have been politically motivated.
Slovakia has become increasingly polarised under Robert Fico’s government. His populist party is anti-EU and has opposed sending military aid to Ukraine, arguing that Slovakia should avoid foreign military engagements and focus on national priorities. His government is currently seeking to close down Slovakia's public broadcaster which it accuses of not being objective and creating political divisions. Opposition parties say the plan is a threat to democracy.

I think it's just impossible to stop a determined gunman. Humans can't react fast enough. I can't think of any assassination attempts that were thwarted by security as it happened. Secret Service failed twice with JFK and Reagan(who didn't die but he got shot), macron got slapped before the perp got body slammed, the women protesters ran up to Putin before getting tackled by security. It's basically an impossible job.

That security detail was horrible. All three agents to his right were looking at him and the person he was interacting with instead of at least one of them watching the surrounding crowd. The undercover guy at 1:43 can be seen behind and to the right of the assassin, also fixated on the people he was interacting with. The agent in the suit nearest to the assassin should’ve been alerted by his aggressive move forward. What a pitiful group.

The security detail needs to be arrested. How is it possible to get five rounds off and five hits? The security detailed leader should be immediately jailed. Here’s why.: The “meet and greet“ group of civilians was not screened, the Prime Minister had no ballistic vest or garments,. No security personnel between the Prime Minister and group of civilians,. The armor, safe car was not properly positioned,. The crowd was immediately dispersed, instead of being detained,. Security detail personnel immediately confused and stood around,. No uniform police escort to the hospital,. The list of blunders continues to grow by the minute.

Ukraine has nothing to do with it directly. But besides other things the shooter said that he is unhappy that our PM is not supporting sending weapons for Ukraine. This attempt is the result of constant brainwashing by the media and some politicians and constant hate speech against the PM. They are blaming him for everything. Calling him a criminal, gangster, head of mafia and many other things. That old man who tried to kill him said he is unhappy with government decisions and repeats all these phrases that some media and politicians spread across the whole society. The result of this is the nation is totally divided and we are at the edge of civil war. Ukraine is one of the reasons. Because the narrative is if you want peace and don't want to send weapons there you are a pro russian or russian agent and therefore you are a villain. This is what so-called liberals and democrats say here. There were many threats of killing and other verbal attacks on social media if you don't follow narrative spread by mainstream media that we should support Ukraine. If you have a different opinion than you are a bad person or they have even worse terms which are very similar to German untermensch (underman) And this shooting is a result of these tensions in our society. Even our president as a head of state was strongly against our PM and she's been refusing to meet with him so she indirectly is responsible for that shooting. Shooter was her supporter. I'm not blaming her but she did nothing for stopping this dividing for 5 years. Actually she divided us even more because she was holding only one side. The one which strongly supports Ukraine.

Shooter is 71 yo, meaning he was 37 when Slovakia went democratic. It is quite possible that this person has extensive experience of living under dictatorial system with Soviet Russian way of doing things. If the prime minister is seen as pro Russian this could be a possible motive for attack.

they let him shoot 5 times and then took his gun away. In Slovakia, weapons are still used only exceptionally. Almost not at all. That's why the security guard didn't shoot either.this is what Europe used to look like, without migrants. Slovakia is still old Europe
I came for the comm ents on the security detail. Absolutely rubbish. They didn't seem to know what to do in this type of situation. At all.

No as the person who killed Franz Ferdinand was from another countries which is the very reason why a war started. This shooter is from Slovakia and you can't go to a war against yourself.
