President Emmanuel Macron is on an official visit to the French overseas territory of New Caledonia. In November, the people of this Pacific archipelago will vote in a referendum on whether to cut ties with Paris. Calls for independence go back decades, and lie rooted in the deep inequality that existed between the native Kanak people and the Europeans. Efforts have been made to redress this inequality, but how successful have they been? Our correspondents report.
A programme prepared by Patrick Lovett and Emerald Maxwell.

As someone who never heard of New Caledonia before, this was very informative. So despite the higher living cost, the French living there are going to vote in favor of remaining French?

Simpleton they’re excluded from the vote if they moved there after 1994 people who live there 1994 and before will only get to vote so the vote excluded 50 percent of european New Caledonians they still voted to stay because of the threat of Chinese colonization

same thing in french guyana, hefty prices on basic products. the crazy thing is to see asparagus beeing shiped from europe with a price tag of at least 10euros for a dozen, while i can buy Peruvian asparagus in sweden for only 2euros... something is wrong...

@@Someone_20248 Because it's tropcial soil. While the nutrients stay in the soil in temperate areas, in tropical it's mostly washed away. So if you burn the area of a former tropical forest you might get crops for some time. But after some rain seasons, the nutrients wash away and you get nothing. there are some place where some asian minorities are try to exploit the land that was given to thme back in the 70ies, and it seams to be working somehow. But for the natives, its kind of a sad story, no education and high birth rate leads to slum. It's really sad.

Although the State of Hawaii is part of the Union of the United States, everything in the island are expensive from a gallon of Milk to Gasoline. This is because everything are shipped from the mainland. I believed it is the same in New Caledonia where probably almost all the goods are shipped from France. France is on the other side of the world which makes the goods expensive to sell in the island because it has to cover the cost of shipping them. But why does it have to be shipped all the way from France to make the goods very expensive when it gets to the island. Perhaps these French companies might want to do business with Australia or New Zealand & have the products made there & label the goods in French. Or better yet, have the goods made in Indonesia since the country of Indonesia is not far too & labor is cheap. Or have the goods made in the island to make it cheaper. Just my 2cents. Nui Ke ALOHA I ka Po'e O New Caledonia.

  • @covfefe1787

that would be difficult because the goods would be the same price because of relabeling items to French standards would be costly Indonesia doesn’t have food safety so everything would be still expensive unless the living standards get downgraded by the government. New Caledonia if Independent would probably switch from French to English in language change the way the drive from right to left wages would go down and the country would turn into a Fiji style economy and country reliant on China,Australia. France only invests in New Caledonia because its strategic to counter Chinese pacific encroachment also for the EU to have influence in the Pacific region.

American Samoa is in a similar situation to New Caledonia as well. Samoans aren't American Citizens and many of them aren't in favor of statehood because of what happened in Hawaii. Hawaii was pretty much commercialized and made into a resort for American tourists. A lot of the natives feel that they lost their homeland in the deal. I think that perhaps international commerce and trade deals made between the Polynesian islands could bring down some shipping costs.

  • 2 жыл бұрын

That is not how it works, and shipping costs are not that high either, this video says it clearly, its because of monopoly, new caledonians have to buy everything from france, even if your neighbouring countries offer something better and cheap, it cannot be sold because of the monopoly.

Its not only increasing wages. You should teach your rural area dwellers how to farm animals and then how to manufacture the basics goods. In that way, your island will be self sufficient,,no need for import.
