Video Game Environment Artist

An environment artist is someone who builds the assets that go into
game environments.
They model, often texture and sometimes light their
environments, specializing in outdoor or indoor locations for a game's
setting.
They are responsible for creating the majority of the overall visuals
the player will encounter on the screen.

    Close, but It's an Environment Artists job to 'set dress' the environment not the level designers.

    Well, the designers do a lot of blocking out. The artist do the art afterwards. But I guess it depends sometimes. Especially if your a indie dev such as myself

    Two different techniques I know.. 1st is block in... Block in everything in primitives in unreal to get your silhoutes and rough shapes.. Then export the meshes as static meshes and detail in a modelling program... Other technique is to wing it and create your assets in max or whatever import and assemble... Might need to export a basic mesh from unreal to make sure you get the scale right...

    Is it right to model the entire landscape in max or model some of them and put them in a game engine , actually in this process I feel little confused , because can't figure out the ratios ...

    Start by first taking a moment to google and do some research about the position. When you hit a dead end on much more specific questions ask those that do that kind of work. The first moves are yours.

    Environment artists don't make level design or put props into scenes. Its level designer's job. They create assets and props themselves using the whole spectrum of 3D-software.

    Yes, game engines are a must in this industry. No game engine, no game out to play it!. So you can start with UE5 and use photorealistic assets from quixel megascan. Good luck and work hard on your personal projects.

    1:50 Is this part called grey blocking? I think it's cool. Which programmes do people use to do this?

  • @Kumar-bg6nr

    @Kumar-bg6nr

    2 жыл бұрын

    Grey or not, it's usually just block-in. It's used to get a rough estimation of scale of the objects and how the player and light would interact with the environment. You can model blocks in any 3D modeling program such as Maya, Max etc. You can actually watch the video that is being shown here on Polygon Academy channel. He explains what it actually is and the guy has worked in the industry so he knows what he is doing.
