Several years after its conclusion, Video Game High School remains the defining accomplishment of its creators at RocketJump and a unique artifact of 2010s KZread. This video essay explores the show's themes, and how those themes connect to the beliefs and lessons of its creators and the evolution of KZread culture over time.

This is gonna sound stupid, but VGHS had a substantial impact on my life. I’m autistic, and I had (and still kind of have) a really hard time connecting with other people. I was made fun of a lot when I was younger, because I had a very blunt and logical personality that really put other kids off, so I spent a lot of time in my own head learning and making stuff. I genuinely thought I was kind of a freak for that until I saw VGHS. Ki Swan wasn’t just the first character in media I saw who was like me, she was the first person I had seen who was like me, and she had awesome friends and used her talents to help people. It is still crazy to me that the most positive, insightful, and uplifting portrayal of an autistic-coded character comes from a gaming-themed teen drama made by KZreadrs. I know it sounds dumb, but seeing Ki thrive really made me more comfortable with myself, and whenever I’m feeling bad, I’ll rewatch some VGHS.

Having the main character be named Brian D was one of the best coincidences to happen to me in middle school, still have friends that say ‘GG BrianD’ to me. So much heart in this series, saddens me that there’s probably never gonna be another web show like this. But being along for the journey from the first episode to the last and seeing Freddie’s journey from short KZread videos to producing and creating more traditional shows has been incredible.

This is a wildly insightful essay and it's criminally under-viewed, man. I'll confess: usually when people send me their videos, I try to watch the first few minutes and give some feedback - but man, I sat through all 40 minutes here and your thoughts were all so great. The way you parallel the show with the shift in the entire culture of KZread content creation in the last 10 years is brilliant and eye-opening. Got me so nostalgic for the old days of sketches by people like Julian Smith and Freddie. Thanks for all the hard work put into the analysis and the edit!

For the number of people who have watched VGHS, this video deserves more attention. I can't imagine the amount of research that went into this video but it definitely reflects with the brand new perspectives and the amount of supporting evidence you provided for each topic. It was a breeze watching a 40 min video because it was such good content. The moment I recognized that this show was special was when Calhoun told Brian the honest truth about his future with Jenny and why he should enjoy it while he can. The reality check was so sobering because I was forced to relate with something really uncomfortable instead of remaining a neutral spectator. Nothing could ever top this show; but per another hap....

It's easy to be discouraged by the fact that VGHS was a blip on the radar, and Rocket Jump has had limited success in professional fields. But there is something to take away here. VGHS may not be the single most historically known series in web history, but those who have seen know that it IS good. Against all odds, VGHS spoke volumes with its mere existence, proving that a great series COULD be made and COULD draw an audience without being profit-motivated. It went out there with something to prove, and goddamn, it proved it. I've seen worse acting, story, effects, and direction in multimillion dollar movies. VGHS, undeniably, is good. Its existence proves that it can be done.

I saw VGHS with my older brother as it was coming out and I have a lot of nostalgia for those 2010s YT, FreddieW, Epic Meal Time, Rooster Teeth, NigaHiga. My brother is no longer with me and I associate these KZread days and VGHS with him. When I first saw the episode of Jimmy Wong's character mourning his dad's death I cried and it was a powerful episode. I commented "I cried" on that episode, and my brother found my comment and replied, "gay." I found it funny that the rest of the replies were defending me, but my brother's account had the same last name so I guess no one made the connection. To think that now I go back and watch that episode and can't help but think about my brother. That sentiment about evolving and growing up is true, when I look back at VGHS and my brother, they both won't grow up, but myself looking at them will. As I get older I've noticed how depressingly similar we are and its a shame I can't see him anymore. I'll rewatch the show when I hit my brother's age and see if I still like it and see it from how he saw it.

with a big cast that smosh has you would think there would be atleast be one person that is dead weight or chosen for diversity because they honestly look oddly diverse almost quota-ish. but its not every single person carries their weight and after watching a few of their shows you can clearly see why they chose any specific person to be a part of the crew. Not to mention the BS that happened with Defy Media and the absolute miracle with GMM. now reunited making the content anthony and ian both loved to make 10+ years ago together in college. its not a simple story of "ohh they just following the algo and doing the stuff they been doing for years" its like a reunion of everybody's childhood at once and also a continuation plus a memory lane flashback look into the past reacting to smosh classics and what made them viral. almost like what the cast of VGHS was just doing. yo sorry i went on a rant but we dont tolerate smosh slander over here

At the time, it was way ahead of it's time, ten fold. For what it was, I still consider it one of the best youtube\webseries ever made. The references, appealing not only to the video-game community and mainstreams, but being able to slightly make fun of the culture in subtle ways, all together still having a good time. I actually didn't even know VGHS existed until 2017. I am currently re-watching it again and am on season 2. The nostalgia man, it's unreal. Still today, it's very popular, talked about, featured on Netflix at one point. There's a whole fandom for it. It's crazy. Being filmed and produced in 2012-2014, a 100% ahead of it's time. The characters are well written, developed, funny, and have good chemistry, the storyline is interesting, the premise is unique and has made me wish a school like this existed to attend, it covers serious moments in season 2-3: like dealing with student stress, friend ship failings, relationship problems, money issues, and loss, and it tackles decently well, the special effects, graphics still hold up today, it's funny, sad, epic, scary, it's just a bit of everything. My only problem with it was season 1. It's still great and entertaining, but not nearly as good as the later seasons. The episodes should have been longer, 30 min or so like the rest. Felt too rushed. I cared about the people in it, the story, but it was pretty campy. I understand they had a budget and couldn't probably do every single thing they wanted for part 1, but a lot of season 1 was cringe. That's just my opinion about the first season, but the rest are great with memorable characters, lines, and moments. The friendship between Brain, Ki, and Ted, was done extremely well, the bullies weren't cliche or boring, the romance was a bit off, but it got better over time. It's pretty impressive considering their finical thread they had to make it, they invented a bunch of made up games that actually would be fun to play, and the whole school setting wasn't that hard to grip or figure out. It's weird and it's not afraid to be weird. That's one of its charms. A ton of different movie genres are meshed into it, romance, action, suspense, mystery, not really horror, more like funny horror, drama. For a web series, the acting is surprisingly good. It's not bad, terrible, or strange or forced. It feels natural. The one thing I didn't get is in season 2, while Brain was struggling to pay tuition, and none of his friends offered to help him. That was kind of stupid and unrealistic. I get they were high school kids, but still...they could have at-least offered to do something. But I get it, it's for the dramatic flare. The Law became one of my fav characters in season 2, his arc was odd but hilarious. It's not that shocking that it broke youtube records at the time. It was genius. One of the best and it will continue to be. People were upset that it ended after season 3. They wanted it to go to college. But literally all the actors could barely pass off a high school students lol. They were all in their 20s to 30s when they filmed it. I think if they tried to continue it, it would be as good. They’d run out of storylines to tell. I think the ending is perfect, with highschool coming to a close. It’s bitter sweet and perfect. It’s normal. After highschool, most people that were friends don’t stay friends, and move on in their life going on different paths. I think how season 3 finished was awesome. I think they had a season 4 planned but scraped it. Maybe because they felt like the story was already told. Atleast we actually got a conclusion. There are so many other series on KZread now that are half done and abandoned for years collecting dust on forums. Back when this was filmed KZread was still very free and wild. It had only been around for 3-4 years. So this coming out probs blew people away on the platform. Lastly, is that I’m glad they aimed it for adult. Not teens or kids. I’m glad it has some swearing, sexual references, adult themes. If they had made it for a child audience, I def think it wouldn’t have performed well. But otherwise, it’s an amazing series.

Incredible video man, actually got me to start to cry! This series came out around the last time in my life I remember being genuinely happy a lot as my life changed drastically alongside the show. I’m very happy I got to experience when it came out and love through that era of KZread and content creation. I don’t know if it’s just nostalgia blinding me, but something from that era just feels missing today. Anyways, thanks for the video and making me feel happy getting to relive some of those emotions I felt as a kid

Incredible essay. It perfectly captured why VGHS will always be one of my favourite things, and also why I broke when it ended. I found it when I had graduated High School and was in my first year of College. It reminded me heavily of Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide with it's zany goofs and great characters but hard hitting topics. I fell in love with the characters and the story, and the setting. It perfectly encapsulated my interests at the time with video games and acting. Streaming was starting to take off, FPS games were at their prime, and it perfectly captured that moment. And then it was over. We all had to grow up, just like they did. And that hit me right where I was. High School was over. I was growing up, and things don't always happen the way we expect, but we are glad that they happened at all. I'm 30 now and I'm still learning this. Thank you for bringing me back to VGHS.

Just recently re-watched the series. Truly a masterclass in story telling and blending the absurdity of it all with genuine, meaningful character development. As a teen, it was just some silly show I would watch which contained a few negative scenes. As an adult, it was a masterpiece that was able to trigger almost every emotion and even bring me to tears. Still, I never did much analysis of the show as I assumed the main moral of the story was simply to enjoy what you do. Sure, that is the main ethos. However, the parallels you drawn between the show and the creators really amplified the already massive respect I had for it. Truly genius. What an amazing video and thank you for allowing me to enjoy more content associated with something I already love!

Great video. I think you perfectly dissected how I felt about the show and the ending. I re-watched it for the first time ever since it was aired a few months ago and it made me feel things that I've never really felt before, plus a really, really strong sense of nostalgia. I think it has to do with the fact that like you said, we are all growing up and living life, and the bittersweet open ended ending really felt like the closing of a long book. I could barely stand to finish the show because of how awful it felt to know that it was over. So much of it felt oddly relatable, especially as we are watching it again as grown adults now. Life truly is special and i think the show captured it beautifully. Wish you all the best.

About to turn 26 in a couple of days. I will never forget the first time I stumbled upon VGHS on KZread and the feelings that I got from it. Since then, I have watched it countless times through out the years, every time with the same amount of nostalgia slapping me in the face. Your Video Essay has done more justice to the show and the people involved, than anybody else has ever done, including KZread. It's also my belief that the reason why all of us feel nostalgic about this show, is because VGHS is a beacon of hope, happiness, self growth and a reminder of a possibly the last period of time when (most) KZreadrs where "fighting the good fight". I thank you for this, for the care you invested. You expressed in the best way possible all the thoughts and feelings I have. Cheers from Greece.
