Whether Zach knows it or not, he's quickly becoming the go-to demo guy (for me, at least). He plays real songs (even his own!) and, overall, does an outstanding job of demonstrating the gear. His ability to EQ, mix, and master may give the gear a bit of a sheen that us peasants might never achieve, but it sure sounds good. I even come back to vids just to listen to his tunes and playing. Keep it up, Zach!

Your song choices reveal a lot of common tastes, eg, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Hum, Shiner, Failure, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden. Warms the cockles of my heart :-P. Sounds great as usual!

Hey Zach another fantastic demo with yet another great set of riffs to show off the pedal : Today I have some *burning questions* for you about 2x12 cab *speaker recommendations * I hope you can help me out today even if its just with a couple points or sentences ... ^ * I know you're usually an IR guy theyre easy, convenient and sound great plus hassle free compared to the setup required for a "real" cab. Lets face it most of us myself included for sure cant grab the aound of a 4x12 cab in a regular room or basement setup ( my landlord one townhouse unit / 1 wall over would kill me lol ) so my oversized 2x12 built here in canada is ALL I have to work with and with any of my amps : ceriatone yeti50, wizard, morris 50 and the friedman smallbox i had mever quite sounded amazing through it .. ^ None of these amps are "bad" and my 2x12 cab is built with all the must haves i.e dovetail voidless consteuction and solid birchwood- no jankety flimsy construction techniques or cheap mdf/ particle board mass produced cab here so It cant be the cabs design i feel it my problem just HAS to he the speaker's. ^ ~ DISCLAIMER #1 ~ : Ive already tried bunch of speakers in the 2x12 cab for all things hard rock like warren demartini, lynch, early VH, and steve stevens tones none of these quite worked some sounded flat out terrible and others just ok" : ***** I've already tried ******* * G12 65Heritage x2 , 2 UK * G12m 20 greenies x2 , * G12H30s x2 ( one of the worst ) * 1 G12m20greeny + 1 v30 sounded horrendous and that shocked me aince dave friedman uses that pairing stock in his robust looking 2x12 cabs * And the old V30 UK x2 to no avail, something always sounded wrong or an odd mix / clash of frequencies... : * currently there's only 2 that sounded alright and theyre inside now; that is - * eminence wizards x2 ~ these are like 2 G12 H30 clones but at 75w each, they sound just OK so while I can live with it, I'm trying to find something else.. ^ * Do you or have you ever used ANY 2x12 cabs/ 2 speaker combinations that rocked in your 2x12 cab in general that you could recommend me ? * Ever try mixing the G12 H30 with a V30 ? * Creamback m65 + Cream H75? * Creamback h or m65 + V30 ? * Or using scumbacks ? - this option costs a killing here in canada so im reluctant to shell out the $$$$$ for that last one ^ * These 5 examples are ones I've heard pop up over the years when guys are trying to get the most out of their 2x12 cab etc etc. ^ ~ DISCLAIMER #2 ~ * Yes I know a 2x12 will never be a 4x12 - even with the best vintage greenbacks or black backs, there's just that bigger bolder iconic sound through a 4x12 that a 2x12 just won't do, yes , that's true and it's very obvious why guys use 4x12s in their demos sponsored or not they flat out sound amazing and highlight the amp in question but its not an option for the forseable future for me in my townhouse setup a 4x12 would just be overkill/ my fiancé already rolls her eyes at my 2x12 whenever I wheel it out 🙄😅 ^ ** Anyways, I'm all ears whenever you get the chance to read this novel one guitar player to another; It would just about make my day since your video demos always blow me away from the second I heard your first few friedman demos a couple years ago. ^ ** if anyone else here seeing this comment can chime in on either there experience with their favourite amp through a 2x12 cab and their speakers of choice I'd really appreciate it as well, the more the merrier, maybe others have been through the same situation with their 2x12 cabs/ swapping 2 speakers same or mixing different ones in a 2x12 etc lmk. *** ^ Cheers from niagara canada and all the best ! 🤟🤟🙏🙏 - Adam

Hey Adam, thanks for checking out the videos. I'll try to tackle a few of these best I can. In the majority of my videos I'm using a Shure SM57 and Neumann TLM102 mic on my cab. While I love IR's and recording that way as well, I try to be fairly consistent with amp demo videos. I don't think one method is necessarily better than the other, just two ways of recording. As for mixing speakers and shooting out a ton of different things, truth be told, I'm a bit of a simpleton in that regard. I've always stuck to the basics. I grew up playing through 4x12's with Vintage 30's or Greenbacks and they always sounded great to me so I never really thought much about it beyond that. The Suhr 2x12 that's in the majority of my videos has Celestion Creamback 75's. I didn't shoot that cab out against a bunch of other cabs in order to settle on it. I got it in a trade and thought it sounded cool and it's stuck around all this time. Typically for recording, I reach for whatever speaker sound best suits the material. Generally speaking for heavy stuff, V30's work great, for more classic rock & cleans, I tend to like Creambacks or Greenbacks, but that's not a set-in-stone rule. You can get great sounds out of any of those. I think the big thing that changed my approach over the years was getting into recording and developing a better understanding of EQ. It also made me realize that I was kind of chasing my tail with so many things (this amp vs this amp, this speaker vs this speaker, etc etc). We're so used to hearing our favorite guitar sounds in a recorded context, listening to your favorite records though headphones, car speakers, studio monitors, hi-fi, etc. Those mixed guitar sounds usually have some kind of EQ going on like high-pass / lo-pass to remove some fizzy top end and tighten up the low end, brighten things up a bit, or remove any muddiness. When you're playing guitar in a room or on stage, generally your ear isn't directly in front of the speaker in your cabinet, but that's where the microphone is. So the audience is hearing the mic'd up sound vs the sound in the room. All that to say, if I'm recording a song and I'm hearing something that's not ideal in my guitar tone, for instance (there's too much brightness, there's not enough low end, there's some muddiness at 400hz, or something like that) it's just a simple fix with some EQ and it really becomes more about sitting things in a mix. So while it's still awesome to find a great amp or cab that you really connect with and feels inspiring to play, it's worth keeping in mind that all those great guitar sounds on records generally have something going on in the EQ and compression department. Hopefully that's useful in some way. Thanks again for checking out the videos!

I have also tried hundreds and I don't disagree. It's really the EQ that changes things. Despite this knowledge, it doesn't seem to stop me from continuing to acquire dirt pedals.
