I was given a Champ by my kids, for 30th Birthday (as far as I can remember) - now at 71, this knife has followed me on 4wd adventures, fishing, working all over Australia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji and Tonga. I has carried out emergency repairs on numerous cars, electrical work on construction sites, delicate survey instrument repairs in the bush, gutting and skinning game animals while hunting etc, etc, etc. Now, I still use it daily for the usual tasks and because of side affects from Cancer and Chemotherapy, simple paper and packet cutting. I have trouble even opening a chocolate wrapper (no strength or feeling in my fingers, so the knife is used to cut open everything). My father always told me "you get what you pay for" - the Champ was very expensive at the time, but I suspect over 40 years constant use, it has worked out far more reliable and far cheaper than buying new "knock-offs" every few months. Love your channel and really appreciate the effort you put in to all your videos. 😁☝

What's worse is that by Victorinox lookalike standards it's actually pretty good, but was only made better than usual because they're normally sold as a actual counterfeits. There's countless $1 generic "Swiss army style" knives out there that are much much worse and practically made of soup cans, they can get away with it because they never have to fool people. It seems that a lot of the better or even decent Chinese knives and multitools tend to originate from unsupervised manufacturers who can only bother upping their quality to make passable counterfiets. Ganzo , sanrenmu, Enlan, and kizer..etc all got started with counterfiets and most of the better cheap multitools stem from counterfeit Leatherman waves.

My first SAK was a cheap knock-off of the camper. The saw was not even a saw, it just had rounded teeth in a single row and the reamer just like the one you got. The blades were ok for light duty and the only thing that worked well was the scissors. The body ended up opening like yours did, but it did clip back in... merely. It was really designed as a pretend toy IMO. I learned my lesson: If my life might depend on it, I buy the real stuff and pay the big bucks or wait for a genuine sale..

Similar story here. My first was a knock-off (I realized looking back) of not-so-bad usability, but it eventually broke (I think it was the corkscrew). But it was fit as an introductory toy or something of the sort. After that my father gifted me a proper Climber, that I have until today, 28 years later.

Hi Felix: I enjoyed your comparison of the two knives. Years ago, at a “flea market” I bought a similar cheap clone of the “Champ”. The Chinese makers had even copied the SAK cross on the side. I bought it for $CDN10 even though the lady wanted $CDN25. Sales were slow I guess, but I would not have paid more to check out this piece of junk. It was pretty bad. The blades were dull. I was pretty apparent that the steel was cheap and the tools had little strength. I think if I had tried the corkscrew on a bottle of wine it might have snapped off. In your example the corkscrew bent. Anyway, with my curiosity satisfied I gave it to the child of a friend (with his blessing) knowing that the dull blades were probably only good for buttering toast. The other simple tools would have been fine for his needs. But the scissors sort of worked. Your description of it as a toy was perfect. The young fellow was very happy to have it. Ken

I never got that model, but I definitely knew the outcome would be that. Of the few counterfeit ones that I have been gifted with, I would not even put in my pocket for use. I've got the Swiss Champ (7 layers) and the XLT version (10 layers). The magnifying glass on the Swiss Champ is at the correct distance when the knife is laid down and something is put under it to magnify, but on the XLT that's 10mm thicker, the magnifying glass sits too high up to focus - it's certainly a design flaw and the magnifying glass should be at the distance where the hex tool is. The extra 10mm on the XLT only adds the spatula (useless), two more small blades (not needed) and the hex tools - which is the only reason I got the XLT, it has the hex tools! It's weird how much thicker it is when it only adds 4 more items. Even the back of the normal Swiss Champ has _every single thing_ the XLT has and the XLT doesn't add anything extra to the back.

Excellent video. You provided much good information about the Victorinox quality. 0:26, oops 15 times less, cannot be mathematically computed. Any number times another number, other than one or zero, will always produce a larger sum never less. Thus, properly stated the Victorinox is 16 times more expensive would make mathematical sense. Or, one could properly say the fake SwissChamp is 1/6th the cost of the real Victorinox.

But seriously it never crossed my mind to consider a knockoff of this or any other Vic model, I've seen vids of other knockoffs where the tools can be bent and broken off with a finger and thumb. I already had 9 SAKs before buying my Champ but still I'm very impressed with it! It is not at all too big for comfortable daily EDC, it fits snugly inside the 5th pocket of my jeans and I don't feel it at all as it doesn't move around or bump against me like that. It will last me forever, maybe I'll have to change the scales in a few years to keep it looking great. The crazy thing is that nowadays a Leatherman Squirt PS4 costs £50, so I paid just £8/$10/CHF 9,- more for my Champ which is 10 x better. Even the small pliers on the Champ are better than on the Squirt because when in use it fills the hand so you have more control and reach. Absolutely fantastic and I'd recommend it to anyone. Even if you pay more than I did it's still well worth it. Gruezi aus England.

I had such a laugh when you pulled out the tweezers - ha ha! But seriously, that knock-off could be a real safety hazard - you could injure your hand or fingers if a tool failed during use (like the saw did). You should now send it back for a warranty claim :-)

You get what you pay for. At least the knockoff does not use the brand name and the price is reflective on the product itself. Its those fake ones that copy 100% like the original SAKs with branding/packaging that are concern. Many thas for sharing your videos 👍

Even in China the quality of an item is related to its price. For simple mechanical items like Swiss Army knives the best Chinese products are comfortable, less expensive than Western equivalents but not 95% less expensive, because the materials are more than 10% of the cost.

Oh dear me! It is embarrassing how bad it actually is. I have a couple of imitations but I'm sure they are not that bad. Maybe use the metal magnifying housing and put Victorinox lens into a custom SAK but although the money was badly spent on the knife it makes an entertaining video. Excellent as usual my friend

When the saw broke and the pliers bent as well as the corkscrew you didn't do a follow up with the victorinox , don't get me wrong, I wouldn't try to do something with my swiss champ that it wasn't supposed to do, but it wasn't exactly the same test. To be fair I wouldn't expect a 6 euro/franc etc to perform anywhere near as good as a 100 euro model, but as a first knife for a clumsy child who is probably going to lose it or a cheap friend who always gets you crap presents, it's perfect.😂 On the plus side the tooth pick probably works.

The question I am approaching this with at 4:04 is “would this knock-off suffice as a single extended use tool? Something that could be placed into an old steel Bandaid box survival kit, a small zipper pouch or more modern French mess tin size PSK?” Those who are preparedness minded but a few steps removed from obsessive may find value in an under $15 USD tool that can be placed, forgotten and yet will answer the call for numerous survival applications in a 2-4 day incident? Getting stranded in a dysfunctional car. Getting lost on what was planned as a day hike. Capsizing a canoe 20 miles into the bush and having to trek out. We shall see….

Indeed a good way of demonstrating why a knock off is a knock off! May I suggest you to buy 'soft grips' for your vice? That way you can clamp the item properly without damaging it. In case of the Chinese knock off it doesn't matter though ;-)

I've bought a SAK from Lidl which "Made from German Steel" After I used it, I understood why the buyer was so discouraged to use it in the description that the only thing missed from the package that "This is only for decoretation purposes" Nonetheless, limitedly but a few tools works on it, (and I really mean few) but its good when you do something which you wouldn't hurt your other tools on)

Felix, I strongly think you were way to hard on that Chinese knock off. I believe it should of been used for what I think it was made for, and that is a display piece only. LOL Another great comparison.

If you want a cheap pocket multitool, just get the one from the Dollar Tree. Yes, their nasty, but they don't overstate themselves. Besides, even just ignoring the knife and scissors, you still have a can opener, bottle opener, flathead and philips screwdriver, nail file, and cork remover. All of which do their job.

hear me out on this one. I believe that if the pliers are any good at all on the knockoff, they might be a good standalone EDC kit tool to punch out of the knife and use separately. I would like to have a few pairs of knocked out pliers like that just for kits. I find the little SAK pliers are great for stronger tweezing tasks and I think I wouldn't mind having a mini plier of such little weight. I understand the comparison felix did here but I think fine usages would be better tested on that.

Frankly, it's not worth an injury or ill-performance in an emergency situation to have a cheap and poorly made EDC multi-tool... even a gutted one for separate parts that are of inferior quality. It is better to invest in a good quality SAK that has an excellent manufacturing history and has been a tried & true tool companion for the Swiss military, adventurers, campers, tradesmen, EMS workers, etc. There are many SAK options to choose from to fit use and budget. Great video, Felix!

I bought my 2nd Swisschamp ca 28-30 years ago after I lost my 1st one in a train. It got some ‚battle scars‘ - the bottle opener is bent a bit from using it to pry open something; the scissors spring is bent and the toothpick is stuck… but hey its MY knife.

I also own both of these. My original SAK Champ is an older model, with a gray plastic magnifier frame. Also one of the rare ones that passed quality control with a defect, the metal file was mistakenly polished shiny. The scissors on the fake do work great, that's the only plus point. The rivets aren't good so when pulling out the big blade, the smaller blade is somewhat deflected so it gets caught in the path of the big one when closing it back. My fake one had tweezers more horribly bent straight out of the box; also had to file the phillips screwdriver because the flutes were too shallow. BTW, I also own the Wenger champ. That's a better head to head comparison.

Die Billigkopie ist übelst mies und es zeigt einmal mehr, dass eine billige Kopie eines Qualitätsprodukts nur Schrott ist.
