Victorian Toy Books

Toy Books were illustrated paperbound children’s books that were affordable. Children’s literature as we know had not picked up just yet, but many fairy tales and nursery rhymes were depicted in these illustrations. Edmund Evans the engraver and printer used chromolithography to colour these illustrations and over time collaborated with Walter Crane, Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway to create some of the most beautiful pieces in Victorian illustration.
At the Robertson Davies Library these Toy Books are found in the Ruari McLean collection-pamphlet boxes.
