Victoria Pendleton: Jousting With An Olympic Champion

Ойын-сауық

We challenged double Olympic gold medalist Victoria Pendleton to try the medieval sport of kings at Kenilworth Castle. See how she got on with wearing heavy armour and riding at up to 30mph while wielding a 12ft lance.

It's so cool to see Medieval/ Middle Age sports getting some appreciation. Just because they're not necessarily useful or relevant anymore doesn't mean they can't still be fun and fascinating to learn about!

Glad you enjoyed the video! We think jousting is as relevant as ever. Our recent study found that it requires the fitness of a pro footballer or top tennis player: goo.gl/BBTJEq

A sport doesn't have to be useful to be relevant. How useful is cricket, football or track? The only relevance of a sport is the satisfaction and happiness it bring to the practitioners.

Holy Roman Emperor and Czech King Charles IV. (14th century) had physical condition of Olympic champion in decathlon. It was found out during anthropological research of his skeleton. Traces of heavy injury, probably from jousting had been also found on his skeleton (fractured lower jaw and badly damaged cervical spine). This injuries cause permanent consequences. They were not deadly, he live approx. for next 30 years after injuries happend.

As an American, we don't have many sports that herald back to our roots as a country that are even remotely as exciting as this! This is so wonderful! I love the fact that you are keeping the old sport alive like this! You know, there's obviously a LOT of people here in the states (myself included) who can trace some of their heritage back to England. We need to embrace our heritage and bring that great sport here and pay it some proper respect!

There are thousands of people in the USA who practice HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) which does include equestrian arts.

Mark Miles If you enjoy this, I suggest you to check horseback archery (if you haven't done it already)! It's been revived here, in Europe, and it's just as exciting!

Mark Miles - Jousting was the official sport of Maryland even before it was a state. Admittedly, not in full harness against each other, back then. Oh, and apparently the best jousters today are the Russians, so an English heritage has nothing to do with it (says the mostly German-descended poster).

Its really amazing to see Victoria Pendleton turned into a medieval knight in shining armour! She really seems like a modern days Joan of Arc. She is an amazing sportswoman who has everything to be a great jouster! You should invite her to do this sport more often.

Fabulous! We have dinner theatres called Medieval Times here in the States. Idk if you know of them but jousting and all the beautiful horses and costumes are part of it. They even have some falconers! I have wanted to go to one forever. Idk if I'll make it but I keep hoping! Thanks EH💂🇬🇧✌🏇🎌🗡🐾

It's not too small for her; it fits her well. If it didn't, she would have trouble trying to move. Armour that's too small would bind and pinch. The gaps are because that's the way that style of armour was made. (see other armours of that pattern)
