Victoria BC: Detailed Operating Tutorial - By Request - Mamod Mk 3 Live Steam Locomotive

My 32 mm gauge Mamod Mark iii is a great little beginner engine. However, a few things can wreck the experience of it. For instance, a dirty burner, clogged gas jets, using cheap butane gas, or loading it with too much steam oil - or not the right oil.
Properly run and cared for this little engine always brings a smile.
For this video I am operating it on my elevated dual 45mm/32 mm gauge elevated railway.
Happy live steaming and model railroading!
Terry

Awesome!! So glad to hear! I had to figure it out by trial and error. You should have seen the cylinder lock my first try and the sheer volume of steam oil shooting out the blast pipe everywhere.

A comprehensive tutorial that covered all the points that I've learned, mostly by trial and error, running my similar MSS. Great fun once you've got the knack of how to get the best out of these fun little locos. :)

It does scoot. However, I had to run it fast so it could go up the 2% grade at the ends of the deck. In this video I had shimmed the elevated line so that the grade is now something like .5% and so the engine now does not need to be run so fast. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qKl5lKuhdMLFm7A.html

top tip for longer run: preheat the boiler water in a microwave or kettle .............

Now that’s something I definitely should have mentioned! I sometimes do that but often don’t because when I run an engine I run it quite a while and top up somewhat frequently so don’t bother preheating water. I definitely should have mentioned it though.

Thanks mate, that was really useful, i have had it running twice. I have done a video of it running too if yiu look through my videos a bit. My biggest issue withit is lighting it up but it was new from factory and came with some major issues. I fixed it last night and went to test fire but couldnt find a gas adapter also looks different to most other mark 3’s. Ill do another video so you can get a better look

This one does not have a whistle. I ordered this locomotive with wheels set to 32 mm gauge. You can order it set to 45 mm gauge. So yes, it can run on LGB track. But it is a bit fast and I would not run it on tight curves.

As a kid who works on the full size I highly don't recommend putting the feul in first Theres a story of a railway where they lit up without water in the boiler. If anyone in my crew first put a layer of coal before water there's sufficient water in the boiler, i will scold them. Hasn't happened before, so it will never happen.

Generally I agree. But this little loco runs on butane and butane needs time to settle in the tank before lighting. Otherwise it can be harder to light and can cause flashes of flame as it sputters, not to mention time for the gasses that escaped the tank when filling to dissipate.

I guess it’s a trade off. In the plug where a whistle would go I have a one way water fill valve. I do like the whistles though.

Also they do make tenders for these engines. If I have one of these engines, I would love to install a whistle. Also to keep the fuel from going on empty, I am thinking of installing a fuel tank on the tender for gas burners, and for engines that use the tablets, I will use the tender to carry extra tablets on board. What do you think of these ideas?

  • @Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi

@@bethmotgomery2662 I like these ideas. I have a tender for my Mk3 now and will be adding RC to drive the steam regulator.

  • @bethmotgomery2662

    @bethmotgomery2662

Ok. So how does the rc function work?? Do they have tanks that can fit in the tender?? If so then I would use some piping and a valve to connect the tender tank to where the fuel goes on the engine so you can refuel easily. Also for water refills, I would build a completely functional little water tower that CAN be refillable.

@@bethmotgomery2662 a receiver and batteries for the RC system in the tender. Then find a way to mount or bracket a small servo in the loco cab with a rod to the steam regulator. I will do a video on this, but it won’t be for a while because we are in the middle of a move.
