I am American and therefor don't know much about the British monarchy. After watching this documentary my feelings for this royal couple are one of awe and inspiration. Was there anything that Prince Albert could NOT do? What an amazing man. And the fact that he brought such happiness to the Queen....a true romance! I feel her pain in the grief she must have felt, I too am a widow. Beautiful. Than ks for sharing this.

Enjoyable documentary. Why must people post such negative comments? Queen Victoria survived a scheming mother and horrible childhood. She fell in love with Prince Albert (and he with her), which was hardly the norm. Prince Albert was brilliant and accomplished and the first to actually visit a slum, the first to concern himself with the plight of the poor (a concern shared by Queen Victoria). So what's up with the nasty remarks? It makes no sense to me to use the comments section to spread ugliness (and ignorance of written history)...

Every woman would want the love of such a valiant, compassionate, innovative man. He truly uplifted the People and the Empire and made a true difference in the lives of millions, even to this day. I am a fan of Albert. He was seen as a German imposter by some English, but in his role with Victoria he never exploited his position, but rather acted as the Queens advisor and a great reformer. Victoria was deeply in love with Albert. Albert was not an idiot, but had intellect and a desire to do the best he could to help the country with his endeavours. I consider that admirable. Some things to this day are attributable to Albert. Christmas was unknown in the UK until Albert introduced it, and the customary Christmas tree. The clan tartans in Scotland were willy nilly until Victorian times. Looking to great works and benevolence towards the poorest amongst the masses, he advised the Queen, but was involved in so much more. The Great Exhibition of 1851 would never have happened had it not been for Albert, and what of the Victoria and Albert Hall? No wonder it was such a great loss to Victoria when he died. Albert was her world. Prince Michael of Kent narrating this documentary was a perfect choice. He did a superb job of this documentary.

"There is no one left to call me Victoria." That line really got me. Her mother had passed, and now her husband had passed. Her children called her "Mama", I believe, and everyone else called her "your majesty" or "ma'am". Wow. That is terribly depressing. I'm not a fan of Albert; I believe he forced his changes, both about the country and her person, onto Victoria far too much. There is no doubt they were deeply in love, which I find wonderful. But that line... My god... It is so sad. :-/

In addition, she gave up playing music because Albert was not there to accompany her. She also stopped wearing dresses with a décolletage because Albert had always admired her shoulders, and she could not bear to wear a dress that showed them if Albert was no longer there to see. Poor Victoria; today she would probably be diagnosed with clinical depression

  • @fairybits

fairybits You appear to have missed the point by several times the depth of the English Channel, LOL. She wasn't depressed because of her décolletage. She was depressed because her husband of 22 years had just died. As for "losing children, relatives" Victoria's mother had died only five months before Albert, and not only did two of Victoria's children die before her but four of her grandchildren as well. Victoria also was the target of six assassination attempts, and when it comes to "suffering gossip" you might want to go look up the Flora Hastings affair, where Victoria couldn't go outside the palace for six months without being booed. Or the hisses of "Mrs Melbourne" when she attended the theatre (implying that she was sleeping with Lord Melbourne) Let's also address "ill health", shall we? It's widely recognised that not only did Victoria suffer from post natal depression at least three times, but she suffered from clinical depression after Albert's death. I sincerely hope that neither you nor any of your family ever suffer from depression and you do not find out first hand just how inaccurate your "not so bad" perceptions are..

ChooseYour Poison No kidding. But it was brought up. And let us be honest. None of us know truly what she was feeling as none of us were there. We can not know unless we are GOD.None of us know what happened in the past because none of us were there. Letters, documents are not complete fact.

  • @chooseyourpoison5105

    @chooseyourpoison5105

    7 жыл бұрын

fairybits Actually, we CAN know what she was feeling, because she wrote it down. In her journal. All 141 volumes of it. Doesn't get much more personal than that. As for the hackneyed "were you there?" argument, implying that only personal experience of historical events is reliable, and anything outside of immediate observation is invalid, even though it is usually the best and least biased form of evidence available - we don't need to "be there" to reliably say that something occurred. That's what historians do for a living - triangulate multiple sources of evidence to achieve a complete picture of history. It is nonsense to say that because someone was not personally present that they cannot make a very informed and very accurate appraisal of a situation given other, less biased evidence. And in this case, there is ample third party evidence that Victoria was clinically depressed, including accounts by her children, her doctor, her ladies in waiting, her servants and ministers of her government, as well as her own journal entries.

The fact that he, Albert and Victoria were deeply in Love and in all sense a couple working as ONE. Victoria's pain at Albert's death must have been truly heart wrenching. And yes to Skye ID, marring 1st cousins isn't a god idea. But the Royal family always married within itself to keep control over Europe and Russia. It was a Family Affair. Not that I agree with it. .

marring first cousins was very normal until the XX century. many times to keep property and wealth in the family. Also because sometimes families were isolated and if they didn't have some other families with the same "class' nearby and they knew them, they look for family members. This happen most of Europe, Italy, Portugal, France, Spain etc... specially in the country or if you had lots of land and properties.

Albert, too, had a pretty grim childhood. His father had affairs with many women, but when Albert's mother took a lover she was kicked out on the streets by her loving husband! Albert and his brother were told she was dead. And all this must have had a big impact on him as he was a very young child. Both he and Victoria had a far from pleasant time as children. But possibly an unpleasant childhood was the rule and not the exception back then.

Right up until the day they were murdered, they never stopped loving each other.

I can believe it even though your family doesn't know't t anything about it because parents don't always mention things to their children.Years after my grandpa died,my mother casually mentioned that he had a cousin who was an actor and had done guest appearances on t.v shows She couldn''t remember his stage name or his real name .only his nickname Neither could my aunts and uncles..God knows why but nobody ever mentioned it to their kids because my brother, cousins and I didn't know about this until I mentioned it to them

I do believe Queen Victoria mourned Prince Albert all her life but I believe the 10 years she was virtually absent from the public eye was a tactic to get the grips with the work of a monarch and catch-up with the workload that was that was done entirely by Albert. Off course she was devastated but I don't think she was the real queen when he was alive. In the end she managed to turn the situation around goes down in history as a remarkable monarch. I do find her honestly and bluntness refreshing. Her letters and diaries are exceptional - shame the vast majority of her writings were destroyed by Princess Beatrice.

There is a very interesting assumption that Royal mixing of blood this closely caused many griefs in the world. Victoria passed a bad gene to her Russian great-grandson, Alexi, whose hemophilia was a big factor that Rasputin manipulated. Russian Tsar and his wife were naturally influenced and would do anything to save their son. This might have been a great distraction from averting the Russian Revolution.

@@reuterromain1054 In the USA loads of ppl marry their cousins. So what. Their children don't grow two heads. The hemophilia was from Victoria as it can't come from the male side. It's inherited female to offspring. Out of nine kids only one suffered from it & lived to be in his 30s. Not bad esp for those days. Took a fall to cause his death from it. No one knew of haemophilia bk then.

I think at that time in history, Great Britain needed a monarch that would lead them into history. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, were most likely T two greatest people to ever lead their country into the future and make them the greatest empire the world has ever seen! That they loved each other so very very much, just makes them all the more appealing to the world! The mind boggles at the thought of what would have happened England had Albert lived as long as Victoria

Yes, and the truly tragic event was Albert dying so young. He seemed to be the only person who could put her difficult & disagreeable attitude and behavior in check. I doubt he would have allowed her to be so meddlesomely interfering & disruptively divisive with their children. I feel sorry for Victoria based on her horrible & lonesome childhood, but you would think the last thing she would want to do is wreck the same havoc on her own children's lives.

2:06 "Prince Albert had already been dead for 2 months." - So she should have been over it by then? She was probably still in shock, as obsess. in love with him as she was! Did they expect her to just snap out of it in a week? (yes, 40 years in black is a little excessive, not to mention expecting everyone to also). *Worst casting* of Prince Albert I've ever seen! Too husky (fat), thick neck, hair's all wrong. He looks more like Jack Black that PA. 41:39 scene where he dies, her acting is terrible. Love this doc though
