He is actually a great teacher. This lesson demonstrates trying to find your internal timing with the metronome clicks. Doing so strengthens both your ability to play naturally, and to be able to play along to a click.

EVERYONE! The area where it sounded like mud and crappy, it was meant to be that way. He even said ‘Really just trying to go crazy. My hands are on auto pilot. I’m just trying to feel the groove in my body.’ He was literally just screwing around, getting his hands out of time with his body to strengthen his body’s internal groove. That’s what this whole thing is about. It’s a practice technique. I did this a lot when I was in college studying percussion just so I could have the strongest possible understanding and instinct (this is mainly instinct; it’s like instinct practice really) of time. Practicing isn’t always pretty, it rarely is, if ever. He’s in a private lesson with a few bassists who he is showing them techniques to practice with. You guys are looking for reasons to attack this guy. Petty.

I've been to one of these type of things with Jeff Berlin, it did teach me a lot, and is a program, but most of it was learned in the first week. These guys will teach you concepts and try to show you how to read music. If your not interested in reading music, GOOD...Its basically memorization. You can get the same information from a 12 dollar book. Learning fingering position, technique, and getting the skills to move on is what you learn, but this video works as good as being there.

I find that the slower the beat the more mistakes I make because of rushing. Sometimes, I would just put metronome on, get the counting right go about a chore, come back and listen if my counting is still in beat with metronome. It's one thing to internalize, it is a whole other ballgame when it you keep tempo while doing something else or getting distracted. .

@ericmknight1906 The thing is, the fast riffs we see here are training. Victor believes, and so do I, that if you play as flashy and as fast as you can during trainings, toning it down will be easy.

Erich, Thanks for Watching, for Your Question & Comment. The type (make/model) of drum machine doesn't matter. Just get any model that fits your budget (even used model, on eBay) and use the metronome function as Victor does, in the video, to setup a repeatable "stick hit" with enough time space between hits for you to "train" your body, ears & instincts to know where the "timing is" between hits. That's what Victor is trying to teach & illustrate, in this video. Thanks again for Watching, Please Make Sure to Subscribe if you haven't already & Stay Tuned, The Musician Network (TMNtv)

That's the point of the exercise to play notes at random and still be able to know where the beat is. Using a riff or lick would be too easy. This is advance stuff buddy! In his workshop I believe he starts with a riff and starts taking away clicks from the metronome in order to improve timing. He goes through various stages of timing internalization.

Absolutely. I'd say this is the secret to the baddest mofos like Larry Graham and Claypool. The beat isn't a cage for them, but they never lose the 'one.' So when you find yourself going berserk at a Primus show, that's why.

yeah, this is a great way to improve your timing as a musician. it's a really hard exercise. shame he's just playing such complicated stuff on top to demonstrate it. try it with just a simple groove and you'll see just how hard it is and how it improves your playing.

Totally agree. Scandalous as this may sound - bass just doesn’t sound good fast and up high for any length of time. It gets really tedious very quickly. The odd fill is cool but grooving down low with just 2 notes will ALWAYS beat any amount of hi speed technical madness. This video was torture to watch. Musical invention is everything in the end and some players can play everything at warp speed but will never write anything memorable.
