It's not Wemby who's losing patience, it's ESPN. They hate that a rookie this good is in a small market like SA. Wemby grew up following Tony Parker and the Spurs. He has been living in a process for many years and has talked about "not skipping steps". Maybe he'll leave at some point in his career, but I am sure it won't be within the next 6-7 years.

The thing is he gets a lot more chances to make defensive plays due to his teams poor defense That’s something a lot of people see, to ignore If let’s say wemby perimet defenders were elite he wouldn’t even get paint shots to swat as he does right now So it’s really hard to gauge a persons defensive abilities on a extremely poor defensive team Ofc there’s exceptions but rn it’s hard to accurately judge wembys defense

He's definitely not the best defender in the NBA by far. He's already great but you have to keep in mind that the gap in stats can easily be explained by reputation. Players don't attack Gobert or AD because they've established their defensive dominance for years. Other defensive stats paint Wemby as one of the 5 best defenders in the league but not the best, and certainly not the best by far.

@thomaslequesne5475 alot of those defensive stats that wemby isn't the best at are due to situation It's generally easier to be a better paint defender when your perimeter defensive is better Also there's whole comps of players not taking basically wide open layups due to wembys presence

Wemby plays with fire...not lost in his own celebrity or skills... Nice to see in this kinda league

I haven't really thought much of him this season.. On a losing side, limited minutes, his super thin build.. but breaking down those numbers it totally checks out that this guy is legit! That 5x5 & 36 minute stat is pretty elite! Not a Spurs fan, but this dude could legit be the next Wilt Chamberlain, except with the mid range to outside shot to boot & I'm stoked for them!

Wish the spurs were better but it’s only his rookie season so it’ll only improve from here on out

The Spurs are deliberately tanking again this season for a high draft pick. There is no other way to explain Wemby's minutes restriction, the "Sochan as point guard"-experiment or the fact that Pop said he "didn't want to coach" Wemby for about half the season.

a 7'4" guy sucessfully doing a hesi and a fadaway jumper on a guy a foot smaller than him is already absurd beyond belief.

Now if the Spurs can just win a game…

Bruh yaw gotta start doing research before you make statements like that. 10-12 team's when wilt played. He played against 7'3" center for 8 games. A 7'2" center for 8. A 7'1" center for 8 2 different 6'10" centers. . A 6'9" defensive juggernaut in Russell for 8 games. The shortest center he played against was 4 games against a 6'8" center because their starter was injured who was 6'10" Routinely the smallest center wilt played against was bill freaking Russell. Wemby is actually more tall than the guys he plays against than wilt was. Avg height in 60's was 6'7" . Acg height today is 6'7" Yaw gotta stop spreading myths.

He is developing both individually and as a teammate learning to play winning basketball. When the Spurs got Robinson, they had an incredible win/loss turnaround. When they got Duncan, again, it was an incredible turnaround, but under different circumstances. The best rookie season, that got no mention by the way, was probably Larry Bird--that is if you value playing winning ball. Bird took a bad 29-53 team to a league best 61-21 his rookie year (+32 wins), and they went to the ECF, losing to a legendary Dr. J led Sixers team. Bird not only won ROY, he also came in 4th in MVP voting and then went on to win a title his 2nd year. He played all 82 games avg. 21-10-5 shooting 40% from 3 with nearly 2 steals per game at the small forward position. If you think victor's season has been better, I don't see it at all. Victor does not have the basketball IQ, at least not yet, nor the leadership that Larry had. Larry could adjust his play and game and make necessary sacrifices to bring out the best in his teammates to reach winning potential. No one out-worked or out-hustled or competed harder and played hurt like Larry and he brought immediate success as a rookie and had instant respect. His teammates knew he was the leader and insisted on winning and if you weren't down with that you were not gonna be on the team. Bird was a boss from day one. Wemby will learn how to incorporate his skills in a way that translates to winning like the great David Robinson and Duncan, I believe, but he still has a long way to go. He is so versatile and so young, too, and he has the perfect coach to bring him along. If he can put it all together and stay healthy, he could go down as a top 5 guy all-time that can do it all in all phases like other legends--Wilt, Bird, Hakeem, Kareem. But don't forget Bird's rookie year if you are contemplating the greatest rookie seasons--many guys put up numbers, but the most important number is WINS. Jordan had an incredible 28 ppg average as a rookie, and they won 11 more games, but they had a losing record.

one inch difference & about a dozen pounds. Not a huge difference but I think, due to the fact that the sport has gotten outrageously lucrative, the NBA is getting the cream of the athletes from around the world. I think that is the more salient difference between the eras.

Wilt played against a 7'3" center a 7'1" center and the rest were 6'10" to 7 feet. Played all those guys for 8 games each. Shortest center he played against for mist of the 60's was 6'9" defensive specialist bill Russell. Wemby is taller than his comp more than wilt was. . Wiggins, Simmons, and even Zion were not nearly as highly rated as Wenbanyama. At least by people who know what they are talking about. I am not even sure that they were much more highly hyped than most #1s. The highest that comes to mind is Greg Oden. If anybody even remembers that name.

There are way better rookies in nba history than wemby...he'll probably even end up not top 10. But he is probably one of the best 20 year olds we've seen (but then again, even recent guys like Luka were better). the main thing about Wemby is that his ceiling is just so high

Hmmmm, I'm not buying it, sorry. He's a great player, no doubt, but we still don't have a way to measure his ability or accomplishments. Other teams don't have to play that hard to beat this team, so they don't. Wemby hasn't had to face any serious competition this year. It's one all-star game after another. This makes his numbers completely useless. They measure nothing. IMO, Chet is by far and away rookie of the year. Cheers.

It's probably fun for some guys to see if they can get a shot off around him. If the shot is blocked, It won't matter. SA will still lose and Wemby's stats mean nothing. Sorry. Oh, I have seen him play a few times. It's painful to watch, it's as much "basketball" as the all-star game. Imagine him playing a playoff game vs Denver. Ouch.
