    Victor has the highest combined block/steal average of ANY player in the NBA right now with a total of 4.3!!!! At 19 years old I haven't seen anyone mention this. Bro is basically DPOY as a rookie. The next two closest players are Shai and AD both tied at 3.8

    Wilt was a man playing before his time. He would be a beast today, but in his career he was playing against 6'6" white guys. He was stronger, faster, and much taller than his competitors. Wemby has a nice game, but there are already guys who are almost his height, and some are stronger and much faster. Porzinzhas, Giannis, Embid are all tough, and we're not even counting Chet Holmgren, who may actually be better than Wemby in the long run.

    The way i view it is that Chet gets more open looks and doesnt have to create as much for himself --- Shai is the main guy on that team. Ralph ruined his knees, trying to prove he could defend against perimeter players like Walter Davis. Wemby also doesn't need to max jump to protect the rim, he's like a shield from 12 ft down with minimal jumping. If he stays with that formula, he should be able to avoid major injury issues. He also has a pure shooting stroke, shoots three's with form us regular folks use to shoot ten-footers. Plus, he can create his own shot like vintage Bob McAdoo. If someone like Kareem was to work with him, for example. Teach him the skyhook. Add that to his repertoire, and he might become the greatest offensive weapon ever seen. I believe he's got potential beyond anyone I've ever seen in my lifetime, but I didn't start watching the game until 1969 so maybe I've missed someone.

    given Yao Ming & Porzingis hype derailed by injuries, we need to slow down with these "unicorn" mid 7 footers when they're young because they're very prone to injury given tge way they play. Yao was more of a post-up or mid-range face-up big man but he could shoot well (no 3's but great midrange & great free throws) & dribbled a bit, Yao would have played more like Wemby if he was born 20 years or so later.

A team with an MVP level PG who draws double teams every night, a back up PG who'd be far & away the best PG on SA, 9 3pt shooters hitting above 40%, multiple playmakers, multiple defenders, a team that did all this all while starting Jaylin Williams (one of the worst starters last year) in his place. And people wonder why Wemby isnt more efficient than him LOL.

    He can pull out a little ways. So? So could Dirk. We've seen big guys who can shoot 3s. Have mid range games. And still average 10 boards. Shaq as a rook dropped 23 and 14. Kareem 29 and 14. Averaging 19 and 10 is like Karl Anthony Towns level rookie year. Yes....we've seen that. Trae Young averaged 19 as a rookie. We are talking about a miniscule sample size, but we've seen all this shit before. It's not breaking the NBA. It's not even impacting it.

    @HOOPMASTERY you are correct, it's opinion, I didn't mean disrespect, but Shaq was WAY more impactful as a rookie than Victor has been to this point. Do I think he will be great? Yes. Best? Nah, doubt he breaks the top 5 center mold all time. Doubt he makes the top 10 centers,but has the potential to do so. That being said, I also felt Tim Duncan would get figured out and have to change his game, so it's not like I bat 1,000 on my assessments. But my question wasn't out of disrespect, it was meant more as a 'don't you remember all that hoopla around Shaq?' type question, just worded improperly.

I think they’re have definitely been other bigs that had more of an impact earlier in the career (such as shaq) but when I look at the way Wemby plays, it’s just something I’ve never seen.. just like I think we will never see a player like shaq. Love the discourse & hearing your point of view! It’s very insightful, hope to see you Around more & hope you have a great day!

    @HOOPMASTERY I'll agree Victor is different for sure, just not positive it will that impactful. In terms of long term wins, how to build around him,etc. I've been right a few times on players, and wrong on many, so it's still just an ordinary opinion. I think we will find it will be hard to win around him,unless you build an unconventional team. And if that happens, and they pull it off, he would become a legend. AND change the game. I think it's going to be hard. Victor will never be just an I'm going to get 30 and 15 and take the game over guy. But if he has oddball pieces fit in,they could pull an unexpected Warriors type dynasty out. Just out of nowhere, winning in a way you aren't supposed to win. I just think that type center will be hard to build around. They need an outside the box thinker for that kid.

    Wembanyama will probably have best ever Rookie year by a 19 year old overall... check the first year P..E.R. of Lebron, K.D., Doncic and others but Chet Holmgren (a super efficient player) is actually having a better overall year and will probably get Rookie of the year, (his 2 years maturity the major difference) Victor will eventually take off above and beyond everyone else when his FG% get's over 50% and his 3 point % continues to improve but ironically the best player of a generation most likely will not get Rookie of the Year.

    The only problem right now is that he shoots too many threes and spends most possessions outside the arc being a spectator. The kind of plays in this video need to happen more often, with him going inside. As things currently stand, he only makes 5.5 buckets per game inside the arc. That's not enough to sway the outcome of those games.

    Spurs have 1 3pt shooter that teams actually guard (Vassell) everyone else shoots like 35% and below. SA also only has 1 backup PG/playmaker on the team that shoots 23% from 3. Any time Wemby gets inside the 3pt line teams are doubling and tripling him and he's got nobody to set him up.

  • @richatlarge462

    @richatlarge462

    @@R-no5qs That explanation makes sense. It's halftime now vs Memphis, his stat line in 13 minutes is stellar, including 11 points, 5 boards, no fouls, no TOs, 4 blocks, though no assists, offensive boards, or FTs made. And yet... Once again, he's a -14 on the court, which is way lower than the +/- of all his teammates. So what gives? Why do other teams so often widen their lead when he's on the floor, despite his defensive presence and offensive threat? I really would like an explanation. I guess I'll have to find a way to watch every minute he's on the court, to see what the teams are doing. Because it's very odd. There have only been a few exceptions to this pattern, most notably vs Portland last week. Tonight is his last game as a 19-year-old.

  • @R-no5qs

    @R-no5qs

    43% vs teams over. 500 that are doubling & tripling him, that's why context matters. Spurs played just 6 teams below .500 in the first 3 months. If you defended Chet or Jaquez like that they'd probably be shooting in the 30s especially since SA has just 1 PG and 1 3pt shooter. Cason Wallace on OKC would be far & away the best PG on the team, Tre Jones is barely an NBA player since he shoots just 25% from 3 and gets hunted.

    Pump those brakes a bit. Right now, he's very, very tall. He has excellent court awareness. He is agile and has excellent eye-hand coordination. He is willing to play defense and his height makes him a terrific rim protector. That said, he is relatively slow. Not slow for a 7'4" guy, but slower than most players in the NBA. He is also relatively weak physically. He's going to have to bulk up and be much stronger to contest guys like Giannis and Embid night in and night out. Doing things we've never seen? Not so much. He can make blocks that few other can because of his ridiculous wingspan. But at the end of the day, he's an emerging big man who can score at all three levels. Very good for a 19 year old rookie, for sure. But don't make it seem like he is reinventing the NBA . There are lots of super talented players doing amazing things.

  • @Nr4747

    Wemby literally makes blocks we have *never* seen in the NBA or anywhere else in professional basketball - *ever*. And I mean actually *ever*. Name one other player who is able to cover that much space, that quickly and get some of his insane double blocks, some of them either blind or while turning around. And those are just the blocks he actually has to make (aka when players actually don't pass up good scoring opportunites to avoid running into his blocking threat). And sure, Wemby still has tons of weaknesses - like any 19 year old would who didn't even play in the Euroleague - and you've correctly highlighted some of them (he has even more). But at the same time: No, we have actually never seen anybody of that length (or even close to it) be that quick in terms of recovering for a double block or getting a block of while turning around or getting a close-out ball deflection on the perimeter while defending the inside.

    I don't think you're realizing how good his stats are, overall. Right now, he's on par with Giannis as a 19 year old rookie (when you keep in mind he's playing limited mins, so extrapolate them out). That is unheard of, even for the best player of all time, to being playing at MVP-level right out of the gate at age 19. He has the highest steal/block rate in the entire NBA at 4.4. Second place is 3.7 Etc. So I disagree, the hype is not overblown.
