Victor Safe Restoration 13: Pinstriping with the Beugler Pro
In this video, I will use the Beugler Pro Pinstriping Tool to pinstripe the doors of an antique Victor Safe that I have been restoring. The job is super easy with this tool - even someone like myself who has never done any pinstriping can do a great job!

Excellent Keith ! I'm just awaiting delivery of my Beugler kit. Thanks a lot. Colin UK 🇬🇧
I just Goggled vintage Victor safes and clicked on images and found a bunch of old Victor safes and there were several photos of you at various stages of your safe restoration. I thought that was kinda neat. Turned out very nice.

***** You have to put "Rucker's General Store" on the front. Many old safes had the owner's name painted on them.
Bugeler should send this out for people to see, you did a fantastic job.I have been given many of these tools over the years, I always give them away, I don’t do long line work ,too boring and tedious for me…
Keith, I would be willing to bet I wasn't the only one that was cheering you on as you were laying down those first few stripes! lol The look of pride and little skip in your step due to a job well done was great to see as well. Great job and can't wait to see it all done! Truly a gorgeous piece your family will have for a long time.
Fantastic! Thanks for making an intimidating technique accessible to us, Keith.
Good job Keith !
That Victor Safe is really turning into a showpiece! I can't wait to see it when you get the rest of the finishing touches on it.
That's a beauty of a safe! It's looking like a brand new version. Definitely a project to be proud of.
Congratulations Kieth! It look great. Can't wait to see the stickers.
I am into to custom paint/hotrodding type stuff, and I know a few pin strippers. One of the saying they use often is, if you want it perfect, buy a sticker! The minor imperfections are great, they signify that it was hand painted. Looks great Keith!
That's beautiful. Well done!
Keith, I think you turned a sow’s ear into a silk purse. 👍
Nice job Keith, the safe looking great.
Beautiful job, Keith .... To me, pin striping on old machines reflected the pride they took in their products.
Keith, I'm impressed! It looks great! Now you have a new segment for your channel . . . "Pinstriping with Keith". Another great job. Thanks for sharing! Have a good one! Dave
nice work and a very good tool to use for that. thanks for the video Richard
Great work, Keith.
Bravo!! Nice job for first real world experience with that tool. The inside looks way cool!
Looks like new----------- Job well done----------------thanks for the videos
Nice job on the pin striping Keith. Looks great.
Nicely done. That magnetic guide looks very helpful too. This video was sa nice Monday morning surprise.
Good work sir, I think it looks very smart thus far. It will be most interesting to eventually see the finished job.
Amazing work Keith!!
Keith, It has been an absolute pleasure watching you restore this safe. It turned out beautifully!

+Joseph Weber Thank you - I still have to make the new dial to finish the project up, but we are getting closer to that every day.
Well done Keith. These gadgets are never as easy to use as you think when you see the demonstration. You'll have one smart safe. Regards.
Very good job Keith. The upholstery shops use a glue you can buy in an aerosol can and using this put new felt inside. As always a very good video. Thanks
I've been waiting patiently and it was well worth the wait......Great work!
Excellent series. Thanks.
Beautiful job of pin striping. When you laid out that magnetic guide I did not recognize that it was rubber at first and I though the camera was distorting things. Then my brain worked again some and I realized it was flexible. That safe will be a work of art when you get it finished. Thanks for the video.
Very nice Keith. As I mentioned weeks ago, the magnetic strip is well worth the cost for someone who doesn't do it everyday. I've been using one for awhile and it get's easier to use once you've seen the results a few times. I pinstripped my P/U as well as the front door trim on my house. It's an awesome tool
Looks amazing Keith you've done an excellent job. That pin striping tool is great.

Looks GREAT! Good work sir
LIKE YOUR BLUE TARTAN AT THE END !
Great Job Keith! I have watched the whole series on this safe. Makes me want to restore the old safe I have. Unfortunately, I just don't have the room.
Keith , you out did your self ! That is super fantastic work .. I bet the family are sad the tried to hack it now ..LOL..
Very nice, Keith. It gives me hope. I can't freehand a straight line on a bet. John
Keith, an interesting video. Thanks for showing a new to me also pinstriping process,, Harvey
same safe and same squeak sound so cool looks awesome.
Keith, I'm glad to see you liked the stripe tool and guide I suggested awhile back. The safe looks great. Be careful when you clear coat the safe because some clears have very aggressive solvents in them and can cause lifting or wrinkling of the base coat especially spray can type paints. I would test somewhere that couldn't be seen before applying the clear overall. Anyhow, great job with the safe and I am anxious to see the finished product! Jamie
Keith, I have followed your project since the start; you have done a great job. I wish I had half your skills and all your tools! I restored my grandpa's safe and really enjoyed the project. I too left the inside mostly original.

+Brian Powell Very cool - nothing like having a nice piece of family history!
That a darn nice job Keith. I know first hand it,s not as easy as it looks.
Awesome work!
Looks Awesome!!! The pin striping is a home run. I think a clear coat may brighten up the old door inside the safe. Wipe it with some mineral spirits. If you like how it looks then that is about how it would look with a clear on it. I would likely restore the interior if it were mine. Of course you do what makes you happy. I like it and I am sure your Grandfather would be proud! All the Best! Mike
What might be loverly would be to paint your family tree on the inside of the main door.. Project is looking very, very good :)
Looks Great!!!!
I do not have an artistic bone in my body... So I was very impressed with how your pin stripping came out. Good Job
The pin stripping came out real nice, Keith! From where I'm sitting, it looks like a professional job! -mike
I wish I could remember what the product was but I used a spray on a small potbellied stove my Grandmother had given me. Initially the black was very dull and the paint very faded. After spraying it the black went to very black and the gold paint brightened up tremendously. I was shocked what a difference it made. That was 15 years ago and it still looks as good as the day I sprayed it. Perhaps one of your viewers might have a clue what it may have been. I remember it was made just for the purpose I used it for. I think you did a great job on the pin striping. Mr Pete would be proud.
Great job!
Nice job Keith. Will look a treat when all finished with Logo's and locks. I think you should leave the inside exactly as it is in remembrance of the previous user. In answer to +Landrew0 (no reply box) maybe you should watch the video again as Keith does explain how he cleaned the surface first. regards from the UK
My pistriping video watching and my machinist video watching has met at this video. I striped my diving board with a Beugler stripe tool.
Excellent piece. If you take your screws and put them in fire then drop them in used motor oil (lots of carbon) they will become black. Just be sure to put them back in fire after that and let them cool off slowly otherwise they will become brittle.
It looks Really Nice !!! I like the magnetic strip That's the only way I could make a straight line The pinstriping tool is a great tool to have. Someday you could use it on an old machine when restoring it
to be fair, for a first attempt it's pretty damn good. just bought myself one and looking forward to practicing on my old jag before it goes in to be painted. then i need to be able to get a nice line on the old girl....... hopefully. impressive safe by the way.
Hey Keith, The Victor Safe looks fantastic, great job on the pinstriping! Anyone would love to own and show off this beauty!!! Ray
After all that you now are a professional pinstriper
just use some 3m buffing compound and a high quality clear on the small door. if you don't want to spend a ton on clear they make a 2k clear in a rattle can that you activate the hardener in. works great also. i love how this restoration is going. I'm about to graduate from paint and body school in savannah and want to do some small restoration projects.
Very nice!
you did better than my first attempts at the tool , but then i was doing a very round motorcycle tank, a bit ambitious! worked out ok though
Wow!! Outstanding; as always, thanks’ for taking the time to make this video! And I support this site. ~M~
Came out great ! Metallics are the toughest 1-Shot paints to use as they are not as smooth as straight colors.
Very good !!
Looks great! I think the safe body needs a thin line on it as well to finish it off though. That is just my preference though. Thanks for showing us how that tool works and I look forward to seeing you revisit the foundry work.:-)
Thanks for show that sir... god bless u always..
Hello Keith I just got finished watching this series. I have been laid up with a aching back so I decided to watch the safe restoration. Wow what a wonderful job and great outcome. Beautiful piece! At first for whatever reason I did not have a big interest in the safe project. But after watching it I found that you are just like Walter Cronkite! He could get me interested in a news story that I could care less about by just listening to his voice. I was waiting for you to say "and that's the way it was May 14th 2015" . LOL You mentioned that the safe would be a family heirloom. Never going to happen Keith. Somebody will have it when they pass on to the big machine shop in the sky and the rumors will start. "they had a fortune in gold coins and jewels" etc etc. Sadly it will end up like you found it with the dial knocked off and a hole in the bottom. If I were you I would put the combination on a sticker and put it on the side so people can see it. Your skills are amazing and you should be very proud of your work. As always thanks for your time and effort.

that beugler set is definitely on my Xmas list for Santa :)
eastwood has a 2k clear coat. you want something that is catalyzed, anything off the shelf at lowes or home depot just don't harden enough to be durable. a 2k clear is basically automotive clear coat so it cures solid. by the looks of it you're pretty good with a rattle can so this would be just like that. just do about 3 light coats. if you want to protect the exterior of the safe i would recommend it there too. its not the cheapest but its a good bang for your buck. and its got a uv protectant so the color won't fade over time. if you have any other questions this is right up my alley and would love to help in any way possible.
Hi Keith. Beautiful piece of work, both the safe and the pin striping. If I may suggest something, I would leave the little interior box as it is now and then line the inside with felt or something like that. That would leave a "connection to the past", you could call it :-) Again, beautiful work! Best regards, Michael
With regards with what do do with the interior, might I suggest leaving the little lock box in original condition and restoring the remainder. In that way the contrast will really show off (to those who see the inside of your safe) the time and skill you put into the restoration.
That looks amazing! I know you said it was easy, but the result is quite impressive :-)
Excellent!!!!
great job
Good job.
You had better be careful, Keith. Museum management will catch wind of this, and then suddenly you're striping one of the locomotives out there! :)
What a great tool. I've somehow never seen one before.

Looks good Keith. Not a bad job at all. ;-) My best painting comes from a foam roller and a quart of Tremclad....LOL Colin
GREAT JOB.
Los subtítulos en español. Gracias. Excelente trabajo. Saludos desde Cuba. Cerrajero
I know this is an old video, but just a heads up, I've seen a few pinstripe artists use Beuglers to pinstripe elaborate jobs. While a sword brush offers more control as far as line thickness goes, you can still taper your lines and do curves pretty easily. the key to striping is being able to "steer" the brush or tool to make nice curves. The challenge with the sword is controlling brush pressure and keeping your hand or arm away from your lines. if you have shaky hands or arthritis the sword brush can be a challenge. A Beugler has it's own challenges; the line thickness is limited by it's wheel size, the tool is bulky, which makes it less sensitive to pressure, but more challenging to steer. It holds more paint than a brush, so pulling a long line down the length of a car is easy, with a brush, you need to reload and palate it a few times along the way. a Beugler can also pull multiple lines of varying thickness at once. With a Beugler, you can start the wheel on it's edge and "roll in" to the flat to get the line to taper in/taper out. With practice, you can stripe pretty well with them. While I usually use Mack swords to stripe, there's room for a Beugler in my kit; Rarely use it though because of all the cleaning involved. Practice with it; You will eventually free hand everything once you get the feel for it.
Good job on the pin striping Keith, just my two cents but I think the inside of the safe would look good if you painted the door black an did some striping on it an put some green material inside of the rest of it. Like the material inside of some jewelry boxes.
Keith, great looking safe and I am glad to see another installment. I do wonder, why did you use such narrow tape for your landing zones? I would think a 1" wide strip would be a lot easier to not overrun. Thanks for the videos!
Enjpoy your videos and admire your skills. For this piece I suggest you put something about the provenance of the piece inside the inner door or the lock box door.
Could you coment on the black paint and the clear top coat planned that would be compatible with the base coats and decals?
Did you do any more on this project in the last two years?
Keith, this is without a doubt one of the best video series that you have produced to date and there are many of them. I can't wait for the rest! Two questions, 1) The outside paint of the safe seemed to appear a little flatter and the doors more glossy. Was that on purpose or was it the light in the shop? 2) I'm sure you mentioned it in one of the earlier episodes, but I was waiting for you to mention the staining on the floor of the safe and what caused it and are you going to leave it that way or not. Personally, I think it make the safe look more vintage the way it is. I'm dying to see the foundry work on the dial parts! Regards, Rich
Thanks for such an interesting video! How long does the One Shot take to dry completely? I'm going to be sprucing up an old safe and will probably use this same paint brand.
the magnet strip can also be found in a refrigerator doorseal
love my beugler its handy
When your cleaning errors use isopropyl alcohol, clean wipes with zero streaking!
Just was curious if you used enamel or lacquer and what the top coat would be? I have not had very good luck with clear top coats and was wondering what I was doing wrong?
I just acquired a safe similar to yours, same body but has no inside door and outside door has a separate dial from door nob. everything is in good shape but paint is all but gone some rust to be sanded down. what do these safes go for after being restored but having needed a complete paint job. I assume it must degrade the safe. I got it for $10 bucks but they'are so awesome looking when restored i have to do it even if i end up selling it.
Perhaps try some rubbing compound on the small door inside.
NICE Inside character, yes
Excellent. How heavy is that safe? approx. guess?
thanx
I'm surprised they don't sell a rigid guide magnet. Maybe you could improvise one, from a length of aluminium tracking and a roll of self adhesive magnetic tape?
Where did you get reproduction decals for the safe restoration?
