The original title of the piece was "Caprice en Forme de Blues". The record producer asked to me to change it to an english title and i came up with "Blue Caprice".
It would have been more correct as "Blues Caprice". Blues being a noun denotes what it is, rather than an adjective, which is then a question of perception of style. This might have inspired more saxophonists to do some research on the Blues.
In a classical sense "Blue Caprice" is a 20th Century form of a Passacaglia or Chaconne on the chord structure and form of the Blues. If one doesn't have an idea of what these are, it can lead to many misinterpretations. You don't have to make a life study of it but you should have an idea of what a Blues consists of in it's basic form and harmonic structure.
"Blue Caprice" is 14 variations on the harmonic structure and form of the blues. It used various styles of music from "Banjo Picking"(first 24 measures) to Baroque, Romantic, Kansas City Blues, Shuffle/Hard Swing, Gospel in Fourths, Contemporary Modern, "Hollywood", Hard Swing, Syncopation; Contemporary distortion of line through register change. The Free Rhythm section is meant to create the effect of analog recording tape being rewound at a high speed. However, it still follows the harmonic structure of the Blues. The Cadenza also follows the structure of the Blues but may be played with more rhythmic freedom. Finally a coda witha quote from "Caprice in form de Valse" by Paul Bonneau.
