One of the sweetest pieces of music ever written. And this is THE best recording of it that I've ever heard. Sublime performance.

I am a great believer in musical tradition, and the saxophone is not traditionally a part of the symphony orchestra. When it does make an occasional guest appearance in this genre it is always memorable. Ravel's choice of alto sax was perfect, nothing else could make this melancholy tune so haunting. Ralph Vaughan-Williams included sax in two of his symphonies. No.9 is scored for three saxes!

It is a CRIME that the saxophone has been kept out of the orchestra for so long.

I just commented.... I’m was a talented oboe player when I was young. Nice combination, the saxophone (the star of this movement,’for sure).’with the oboe answering and echoing.

This might be my favorite piece of classical music. It has a certain mysterious sound that I can't get enough of. Lastly. That Sax brought it home!

Bup bumm, Bup bumm of the bassoon.....and the legato sax!....with the swelling and diminishing strings...the middle discordant tension....

I'm a clarinet player. Have been for about 10 years. Got 4 years of school for it. Most times I'd argue that clarinet was the move over sax. But I can't get that sweet silky tone on my clarinet. Need alto sax for that. Long story short, don't let clarinet players talk down to you. They can't do everything like they think they can.

Awesome! I really wish saxophone was in orchestra music more. I currently play oboe in my orchestra, but if they needed a saxophone, I wouldn't hesitate to get my saxophone to play.

First chair oboe all state orchestra, Minnesota, 1993. We did “pictures.”’ so much great oboe throughout, but this movement was my favorite. Still remember the fingerings and the cues. Know the whole thing inside and out.... Just well arranged all around. Brass gets a lot of great play in “pictures” also. Holds a very special place in my heart. I have moved on to a profession that doesn’t allow time for music for fun any longer. Sometimes I feel such a pang in my heart when I listen to “pictures.” And fond memories.

Exactly the same for me except much more recently! The hardest thing I ever played on oboe, I think...I wasn't meant to be principal, in theory I was to play the cor anglais, but the principal oboist broke his hand so I was put in charge and decided to play 1st because it looked more demanding than the cor anglais part (and the other oboists were a bit less experienced, younger - very good nonetheless). But I suffer from terrible stage fright so often don't really enjoy the performance as much as the rehearsals but this was an exception because I loved the music so much and was also very happy with how all the woodwinds sounded (many of them better than me and now professional musicians). I do remember almost passing out at the beginning of the last movement though...turns out that eating little and hot weather combined with the ridiculous altitude of Baba Yaga is a recipe for fainting...I literally only managed to prevent myself from fainting because the first entry in the Great Gate of Kiev is on a top E flat haha

Melodie, Harmonie und Rhythmus: Die Melodie ist getragen und sanft, mit einfachen, aber ergreifenden Harmonien. Der Rhythmus ist langsam und fließend. Klangfarbe und Instrumentierung: Tiefe, warme Klangfarben, oft durch Holzbläser und Streicher dargestellt. Ein Saxophon oder ein ähnliches Instrument spielt die Hauptmelodie. I think Mussorgsky was inspired from the begining part of Mendelssohn's "Violin Concerto In E Minor", reducing the tempo. I listened recent and for the first time this Mendelssohn Concerto and the first part seemed so familiar. Where it is from??? I finally remembered: Mussorgsky - Pictures...!!! I have the vinyl and I found!!! THE OLD CASTLE!!! I listened again and again, it is similar, so was inspiration or theft?
