Victor Davis Hanson | Restoring the Idea of Liberty in America

September 8, 2021
This video features the very timely presentation by Dr. Victor Davis Hanson at Hillsdale College, in Hillsdale, MI, on topics from his bestselling book, "The Dying Citizen: How Progressive Elites, Tribalism, and Globalization Are Destroying the Idea of America." He is introduced by Dr. Mark A. Kalthoff, the Henry Salvatori Chair in History and Traditional Values and Dean of Faculty at Hillsdale College.
www.hillsdale.edu/
“Mr. Hanson, an accomplished classicist and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, is one of the great amalgamators of American political writing. He has a particular gift for bringing together a dizzying array of events, controversies and ideas and making sense of them by advancing a coherent argument that incorporates thousands of years of history… Mr. Hanson hits hard, but I don’t find his analysis unfair or partisan. There is enormous value, moreover, in thinking about toxic political developments not as problems of the moment but as destructive pathologies to which all societies are prone at all times.”
-"Wall Street Journal"
“Indispensable… Hanson’s immensely erudite and inspiriting book offers a most welcome corrective to those influential forces and doctrines in our midst that conspire to delegitimize the citizen and citizenship as such. In doing so, he provides us with hope that our society still has within it significant powers of rejuvenation.”
-"National Review"
“As Victor Davis Hanson shows in his learned, powerful, and troubling new book, 'The Dying Citizen,' the steady devolution of citizenship speaks volumes about where we are today and where we seem to be heading… Hanson lays out this grim diagnosis with his usual clarity and brilliance, moving easily from his deep specialized knowledge of the ancient Greek and Roman world through savvy observations about present-day politics and American society.”
-"The New Criterion"
“Citizenship brings all the enduring principles of democracy into the sphere of the individual. It honors the human need for a collective identity even as it makes room for the individual to pursue happiness. In this remarkably illuminating book, Victor Davis Hanson shows how so many contemporary problems-identity politics, the border crisis, bloated government, etc.-have only worsened for the lack of a vigorous and clarifying idea of citizenship. In this deeply democratic idea, Hanson points to a way beyond what ails us.”
-Shelby Steele, author of "Shame"
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Victor Davis Hanson is the Martin and Illie Anderson Senior Fellow in the Hoover Institution, the Wayne and Marcia Buske Distinguished Fellow in History at Hillsdale College, and a Member of the Board of Advisors for both the Independent Institute as well as the quarterly journal, "The Independent Review: A Journal of Political Economy." He received his Ph.D. in classics from Stanford University. The author or editor of twenty-four books, he is the recipient of the American Philological Association's Excellence in Teaching Award, Eric Breindel Award for Excellence in Opinion Journalism, National Humanities Medal and the Bradley Prize.

I served My Country Honorably, then used those skills to start My own business for 27 years. I always treated and performed for my customers to the highest standards of Trade and never had to apologize for anything. Citizens of this Country that are ashamed or embarrassed are either not utilizing even Minute offers available to only American's. I see the Woke and other Haters of America are actually miserable, lazy, non-competitive, unmotivated and afraid to Fail over the slightest risk. They Blame their inept abilities on this Beautiful United States of America, the Land of Opportunities only Bound by their Own Boundaries "they" have installed! These are the People that are helping the destruction Dr. Hansen identified. I am strong in nature, never discontempt for anyone type person or race, but these individuals from all aspects have Pissed Me off to no end! They also lack awareness of repercussions of their actions. Myself and Patriotic Bros. and Sisters are out of patience and if it means them or America's Existence......................We will gladly assist them to the 'wide open southern border,' expenses paid. Maybe after a year or so of receiving Real Socialism and lawlessness these people could end up becoming the best Citizens' of the Greatest Constitutional Republic in History!

That's a good un😂 "The land of the fee and the home of the ( oblivious city zen) slaves" - "free" 😂 Yeah right ?!? - that is complete non sense. The us is the opposite of free. It is and always has been enslaved. If you dont work a slave job, enriching and obeying slave bosses and managers , for to earn money and give the govs the lions share of your slave labor/money , that they armed rob it from you - And if you don't oney the govs- you can't survive, not "legally. Youll likely find yourself kidnapped and caged by the criminal thig slave drivers called cops - And you can't buy / trade your slave labor for no liberty / permit/ permission to do anything. Unless you work a slave job, obey, and pay the slave lords called govs the lions share of your slave labor. And your only other option for survival other than working a slave job - is to do crime / illegal stuff - Which will get you kidnapped and caged if you get caught. INCLUDING AND ESPECIALLY IF YOU TRY TO LIVE FOR FREE AND FREELY IN NATURE THE WAY OUR CREATORS (our father and Yahshua the christ) INTENDED/ designed and built us and programmed us to do. Actual freeness as opposed to slavery is illegal in the us. That means that the us has never been free , it has always been a enslaved by the devil / rebellion/ civy lies nation. And the big AC Lucifer is clearly the "in god they trust/ the us govs trust ". The very first thing the us govs did was to torture and murder the free folks into extinction, and they forced the survivors into subjection/ enslaved the survivors. And the us is a shiney beacon of slaves who think that slavery in the devil's civy lies nations and religions = freeness . And The us is one of the most enslaved civy lies nations and religions in the world. "Working for money( is still )slavery to the evil masters of the devil/ the rebellion lead by the OG called the big AC "Lucifer"/ the OG 6-6-6 gang. " And " Money is still the root of all of the evil in the devils civy lies nations and religions."

Now it's just a bunch of atheistic fools. Think about this, gender fluidity absurdities fundamentally changed America into Sodom and Gomorrah on steroids. Obama did that. Now he wouldn't of been able to do that if the GOD hating baby killing KKK slave democratic party hadn't of gotten GOD, prayer, the Ten Commandments and Bible study out of the American schools and the public square in the 1960's. It took about 50 years to dumb down the masses in America too get too that point.

Victor Hanson is not only brilliant, he's extremely knowledgeable and articulate. When you add to that the fact that he's very sensible and seems to have a great grasp on how the world is and how it should be, it's hard to understand why he has never run for President or at least for U.S. Senator. I'm 91 years old and consequently have seen a number of both of them and believe that he is as well suited to be the President of the United States as any that we have had in my lifetime. I would consider it an honor to assist him in any small way that I could to attain that goal for the good of our country. Perhaps someone who is younger could even start a grass roots campaign to draft him for the job.

The lack of people like VDH is what’s wrong with the nation today. Those of us old enough to remember Carl Sagan know exactly what I mean. A calm, intelligent, well spoken and life experienced voice of reason is something that is required to hold a society together, given the inevitable hard times everyone will face in life, no matter the issue itself. You need to hear someone like this every once in a while to pull you up, and put you back on track when life takes you too far off the rails. I could listen to this guy talk all day long, truly a National treasure he is. I would love a one in one with him and a bottle of scotch 😎 🍻

You speaking of this brilliant Victor Davis "The Case for Trump" Hanson • reminds me of where someone else in the broadcast range of Hoover Institute Peter Robinson interview of brilliant conservative Thomas Sowell; refers the internet audience of Mr. Sowell also as being a "national treasure." This strikes me as 'seeing' that far more of us need to be like these ingenious conservatives and far less like these damn treacherous Judas-like, Christ-betraying, damned devilish, leftwingers all throughout America.

VDH is simply great. His lectures via youtube, I can easily refer back to the early days of the Republic: “The safeguard of morality is religion, and morality is the best security of law and the surest pledge of freedom.” - Alexis de Tocqueville "Only virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters." - Benjamin Franklin “The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money.” - Alexis de Tocqueville

The saying, those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it, comes to mind when listening to Mr. Hansen. As chaotic as this world has become, and I think this is by design, Mr. Hansen knows enough history, to understand what is essentially going on, and who the characters are moving the levers of power, and what are the forces behind these modern ideals of white privaledge, globalisation, wokeness, etc.

I should have gotten a degree in classical studies. That would have been fun and a breeze, because of memory and love for, because my interest level high. I had no idea that existed when I went to college. Basically it was pick a college, and go, decide there on what going to study for a degree. I had no adult advice about it. I was on my own, but it was paid for by my parents. The only class I had somewhat similar, ancient civilizations, I loved it, probably got an A. Taught by Sister Veronica. She was a really good teacher, considered hard by some others, but I didn't think so. She had the best character and temperament. She was an angel.

I don't know if you've noticed during the Q&A session that VDH leaves the podium to face the person posing the question; and, subsequently returns to the podium to give his answer to the audience. VDH is a humanitarian... A farmer... A man with common-sense realities coupled with intense insight and a rigorous methodology towards deductive logic. Much like a farmer going to work in the pre-dawn hours, VDH goes right to the source of the question, as opposed to remaining at the podium, as all [other] orators do. VDH is a phenomenal human-being... Literally clone-worthy!

Good Job, keep it up because this sort-of delivery will appeal to the young and we will persuade more. JUST like America something is different now but we must remember what it is to be American. VDH can help.

The saddest lesson of history is this. If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject all evidence of the bamboozle. We've been captured. It's just simply too painful for us to admit, too, ourselves we've been taken. If a charlatan takes power over you, you almost never get it back. Carl Sagan

What happened in Afghanistan? The military was following the orders of apparent leaders who seem to be enemies within. Why did the military not follow their own rules? You don't give up the base! You take out or destroy any old equipment or technology you cannot take! You evacuate your people, not give up your base and then find you can't bring them out! You don't leave them there to get murdered! You don't give your military equipment and technology to the adversary to copy and use against you! You don't give the enemy lists of all your vulnerable places so they can attack them.
