Victor Davis Hanson Diagnoses The Dying Citizen

Recorded on October 23, 2021
Victor Davis Hanson is a classicist and historian at the Hoover Institution. His new book is The Dying Citizen: How Progressive Elites, Tribalism, and Globalization Are Destroying the Idea of America. As is typical whenever Dr. Hanson joins us, this interview covers a wide spectrum of topics and references, including the Acts of the Apostles, immigration, Jim Crow laws, primary tribal identities, the suburban everyman, the shrinking middle class, and JFK’s “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech. It’s a bracing conversation with a scholar who has an incredible breadth of interests and knowledge.

I remember being taught in high school, nearly 60 years ago, that there were certain conditions that HAD TO EXIST in a society in order for that society to be able to exist and function as a democracy, or a democratic republic. Sadly, I have forgotten most of those essentials. BUT (!!) what Dr. Hanson has pointed out fall very much along the same lines. A large and vibrant middle class, an attitude of voluntary compliance [I don't need an ever present police to make me stop at stop signs], overwhelming majority of citizens who are literate and understand each other, ( etc. ) are just some of the necessities. God Bless you, Dr. Hanson !!

For the majority of my life I live a boring, dull, mediocre life. But during the short time I'm able to listen to this great intellectual, I feel I'm being truly educated, enlightened and rising above the dull lifeless masses. I feel for a short time my citizenship does have value, that it's worth more than a mess of pottage.

I am from the USSR - Ukraine. In 1990 I felt that the USSR is going to face big calamity, so I left to Israel. Then moved to Canada. USSR collapsed with a lot of noise and tragedy for her citizens. Today I have the same feel for Canada and the USA - big calamity ahead with a lot of human tragedies. Does anyone has another Globe?

My grandmother got off an immigrant boat in New York, worked in sweatshop, read the Yiddish newspaper and helped form the ILGWU. Her son went to university during the Depression, served in the Army in WW2 and became a university professor. Assimilation of core upwardly mobile values was the key. An outsider can become an insider. There is a price to pay and there are no guarantees of success.

Thank you so much, Mr. Hanson. I hope you will be invited to speak in many venues, not just conservative platforms. This is a critical message for America. Personally, I believe religion, specifically the WCC, is instigating these global policies to include open borders. According to an article in the WSJ the Pope has been organizing the Latin American caravans and calling for open borders. I do think there is a powerful force at work pushing globalization and tribal groups.

Well congratulations you covered so much that it's hard to make a comment so just one : I'm from the Republic of Panamá and daily I see the migrants that pass through our country heading for the States and impresses me to see the people that they are fiscally they have a look about them (not all but the majority) . That if they make it to your country and the American dream doesn't work for them you guys got a mega problem. This is a economical migration if they don't find what they want (money) they'll look for it another way. When they get to the states they had not broken the law in the U.S. but in every country that they have eligally crossed (at least 6 ) . Do you really want people with this mentality. And most are extremely poor and uneducated it's not doctors, nurses, engineers or teachers that are jumping your borders but indescribable hords. Protect your nation. God bless
