The presence of man has been documented since the most remote antiquity on the territory of Vichese. Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Eneolithic stations and sites are present almost everywhere.
According to the historiographical tradition, the present-day inhabited center would have had an origin similar to that of nearby Peschici, that is, the work of "Schiavoni" (slavs) mercenary soldiers who came from the eastern coasts of the Adriatic.
The Schiavoni, after having settled near an Iron Age necropolis located on a hill called Tabor, mingled with the local residents gathered in a single fortified center which was called Vico.
Also according to this tradition, the town was founded in 970 AD by the legendary slav leader Sueripolo who, in the service of the Byzantines (or of Otto I), had expelled the Saracen pirates from the Gargano who had transformed it into their lair.
However, the first official document attesting the presence of a Castrum Vici on the Gargano dates back to 1113 when the area was part of the Norman Duchy of....

Dear Lawsonartzy, what a pleasure reading from you again. And thank you , as always, truly. I love actually editing the drone films , I tried in the past to created ad-hoc ones as you saw too, but then discontinued for the time being. But it's still one of my true passions. I was maybe thinking of creating a single video with only "intros" of the towns and writing under the name of each... Maybe could be a good idea?

Gargano is so unique and quite. I find it plausible . To live in a house with no neighbours near by and silent alleys as some areas are there will be a wonderful experience I imagine . The lady who is sitting alone and turned away from camera is lovely . Aged residents confined in their own are adorable .Wonderful tour somewhat Philosophical 😊😊😊.Best wishes . Old Trappeto is wonderful indeed .

Dear Rajyashree, what a pleasure reading from you again. Indeed... philosophical is the word as I agree too. Another friend said it's also "archaic"and I agree as well. It's a town quite different... loved it for its rough beauty though. There was a sense of "time-less" history there which I found rarely in other towns. I'll upload a new video of a Trappeto only in the future

Interesting town. Quite different from the other Puglian towns that you have posted. Not touristy. The old town is fascinating, it truly is like going back in time. The narrow alleys are indeed very narrow. And those stairs down (via Casela), very steep. Friendly kitty in via Fuoriporta. Wonder why the very narrow via del bacio got its name. Thanks for another interesting walk, Riccardo 👍🙂

Hi Geraldine! Indeed... very very different and with a peculiar history as well I must say. It wasn't very easy walking with that hot weather and climbing and descending for sure) But truly adored Vico.. there's something magic in its roughness. Via del Bacio... didn't find much about it... the Alley of Kiss... perhaps for its narrowess I reckon. Glad you enjoyed also this tour, I loved it there ...

This town has a character of its own, very nice. The old town only needs some painting, maybe they like it that way. It was interesting when you gave us a glimpse of the new town, beautiful. It's my understanding the law in Italy wants restaurants to have one day off and many chose to close on Sundays or Mondays. That's why I think the streets are empty and the "Trappeto" was also not serving. The Churches are beautiful, Italy has the most stunning churches. Thanks for the video.

This is the best way to travel right now, with no Covid tests required, no vaccine certificate, no quarantine. Bring a glass of wine and sit in your favorite first class chair. And dream.

Indeed Ken, I just hope there won't be a new wave of closures even here :/ Still a lot to see in Setptember before the weather will become worse. Loved Vico very much anyway... very rough and real

My family lived here in the 1800s before coming to New York. The picture on Wikipedia makes it look like a dump, but now I can the beauty of it.

Oh it's a very cosy and nice place indeed Vico. Not so touristic as other towns perhaps, but very charming and close to the sea. Glad to see messages like this from ancestors of people coming from Italy

@@StillWanderer Yes, I love the look of the restaurant. I saw the village was ranked one of the most beautiful villages in Italy by a non-profit association. Do you know when this village was established? I'm guessing it's nearly 1000 years old. Unlike the United States, the Italians surely build things that last over the course of just one lifetime.

One of the most archaic-looking borghi you presented to date, with those irregular facades and preserved patina. Also, interesting that was founded by Slavs.

Dear Andrei, happy to see you again! Indeed, the history of the Slavs mercenaries in the Gargano area is rather deep and not well known outside of Italy. I liked the town very much too, very charming in its own archaic way as you said.
