Vice Repair and Restoration. Dawn 5SP Made in Australia.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I repair and restore a well used and abused Dawn 5 SP Vice.
Dawn vices are made in Australia. 5 Inch Standard Pattern.
I found out that this vice had a broken piece only after I took it all apart so I bought some new welding equipment and had a crack at fixing it.
This tool has so many imperfections but since it's going back to work I did not want to over-do the grinding and polishing.
However I still wanted to give it a unique look with a Chameleon / Colour shifting paint so it will look different depending on light and angle of observation.

I did mate, it's a cracker. Your new KZread segment, Pimp my Vice! I have scored a few old hand saws and tools that I'm doing mild restos on, plus my 98 Falcon Panel van, 1968 Mercury Marquis, extensions on house. I don't know how I use to fit work in?

@@LittleRestorers actually Record bought the rights to use the pattern, the Dawn brothers made such a good and simple vice it attracted international rights sales and copiers. I watched a recent ownership structure try to "cheapen" the manufacturing process without product degradation, it was a failure. So many people see a simply mechanism and think 1: it's low quality 2: low tolerance 3: they are smarter and can do a better job, the Dawn Engineers vice remains and will survive their stupidity.

Very flash buddy. I love the colour with the gold lettering. Surely the girls didn’t say that colour is boring. You’re gaining a reputation of selecting new and different colour pallets for vices that actually work and make them desirable. Great work mate. 😍

Thank you. Australia made Dawn. The company has been around since 1917, and you can still buy some of their products through distributors. But if you ask me, the old ones were just built differently. 😉

Yes sir. Everything old is built better than the new stuff. Here in America our products just aren't what they used to be. I'm restoring a late 1930's Craftsman 4x36 belt sander and a 1949 Craftsman tablesaw that belonged to my dad right now and they are so much more robust and better quality than my newer stuff. When they are finished my newer will be sold and i will use these.

Nice job mate, love the colour. Why stick to the same old when repainting if you can brighten up your workshop, with a piece of individuality. I have from new a Dawn 5 inch fabricated offset and recently picked up it's 4 inch little brother and a 4 inch Joplin. Both I will restore, jaws in both are excellent, showing little use. I'm restoring a 6 inch Bench grinder and painted it hammertone green, sadly, I had the paint for years and it sprayed odd, but will still come up okay, compared to the original yellow and rust colour!

Very nice! Colour is unusual, but great! Glad to see someone (apart from myself!) doing something different.👍👍 (we know where your loyalties lie with those colours! 👍) I've got an old Dawn to do myself, in a lot worse condition than yours started out. Be Ok once I get the thing to turn! 🤣 I've restored plenty of old mechanical jacks & chassis stands, usually to original colours. If I get 2's or 3's of, then the colours change! Not long started doing a 1/2 & 1/2. Half untouched, half restored. Difficult to do without getting carried away & doing the whole thing! 🤣🤣 A large amount of my jacks & stands are Australian, APAC (Clyde/APAC), Dawn & Joplin. Biggest thing is an APAC 5,000lb truck jack. A slow burner, that one.
