“Our skeletons have grown up resisting gravity for quite a few million years. At the end of the day, we have to think of bone not as this sort of static dried-out skeleton in the desert, but rather this live viable tissue that adds bone and resorbs bone.”
-Clinton Rubin, Ph.D.
Dr. Clinton Rubin is a SUNY distinguished professor of biomedical engineering and director of the Center for Biotechnology at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, New York. Dr. Rubin's research is targeted toward bones and how to use mechanical stimuli to establish non-drug treatment strategies for osteoporosis and diabetes. Dr. Rubin holds 30 patents in the areas of wound repairs, stem cell regeneration, and treatment of metabolic disease. He founded EXOGEN, Juvent, and Marodyne Medical, which uses physical signals to regulate biological processes. He has published over 300 articles. In this episode, Dr. Rubin explains the safety and benefits of low-intensity vibration for our bones. He describes the exact parameters we are looking for when it comes to vibration platforms and the latest research on this topic.

Thank you for invite professor Ruben to share this well informed knowledge.I’ve been diagnosed as osteoporosis and just bought a mini slow intensity vibration plate, I can’t wait to use it. I wish I can afford the mr. Ruben’s LIV plate, it just too expensive for me now. Can professor Ruben recommend any brand is safe to use ?

It isn’t - but I think it’s good for one thing - balance. Try standing on one foot, squats etc

Hi Margie, this is so informative and helpful. Thank you. May I ask what the current price is of the vibration plate? Or at least the range of cost? I suspect it will be outside of my budget. Thanks again.

In the US - you can purchase the Marodyne for $3000 - then using MB200 get a $200 discount. It is expensive, but often times people can use flexible spending and different medical plans to cover the cost. I have always used and recommended Copa Health - they have been very helpful with everything. Their info is above under links.

At 8:28, "..your muscle basically vibrates..." I'm not an expert in muscle cells, but I have never seen anywhere in any muscle physiology book anything about muscle vibration. I am afraid he is making this up out of thin air. Does anyone have any scientific citations to support this vibrating muscle thing?

I’ve seen a lot on this device, what I haven’t seen is actual Dexa scans that show the improvement.

I have a Power Plate I have osteoporosis. Is this plate compatible to the one he is speaking about

  • @magpiegirl3783

No. The Powerplate and others like it actually shake you … many brands have quite a few contraindications for use. The Marodyne is a low vibration plate that sends vibration through the plate into your legs and spine.

The “Power Plates” represent the kind of intellectual theft Jeff Goldblum spoke of in “Jurassic Park”: “You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn't earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don't take any responsibility for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could, and before you even knew what you had, you patented it, and packaged it, and…you're selling it, you wanna sell it.” These knockoffs can be hazardous.
