VibeDrum vs Freezbee [ handmade steel tongue drum shootout ]

Музыка

I decided to do a side-by-side comparison between my VibeDrum and my Freezbee (from Zen Percussion). They are both handmade steel tongue drums but they sound completely different. It is difficult to choose a favorite. The VibeDrum is deep and resonant while the Freezbee is percussive and airy. In this video, I compare the specs on the two and then do some sound samples.

Love this! I've been wondering about the VibeDrum, but I think the Freezbee is still my favorite. Such a great drum. That warm percussive tone is amazing!

Indeed. They are both great. If you're looking for that deep resonant tone... the VibeDrum is king. It sounds sooo good in a mix (w/mallets especially) with other instruments because it really fills in the bass register where the others don't. However, it you dig the percussive vibe... the Freezbee REALLY nails it. It's almost sounds like a less resonant handpan.

It's really hard for me to choose a favorite. They're both really great. It really depends on whether your looking for the deep resonant tone or the more percussive tone.

Another vote for the Freezbee. The vibe has too much of the tank sound for my taste. The freezbee almost has a woody sound when played by hand. When played with mallets is where the beautiful metal tones shine. But very good description and demo of both. I enjoy comparison vids

Definitely Freezbee. For a less costly option drum with fewer options and not as ornate, checkout Hluru Drums. Half the price or less if you're okay with D minor.

Thanks for watching. Buying your first tongue drum is a big step. There are so many types... scales... colors... etc. I'd say pick a scale that you like the sound of and don't overthink it. Once you play it for a while, you'll know if it's going to work for you. Good luck.

I liked the red one in price without mallets the brown 🥁 sounds better but that could be tuning.

That is a good point. One is tuned in the Akebono scale where the other is in the Pygmy scale so if your ears favor one or the other, that could play a factor. I agree that the Freezbee sounds better without mallets and the Vibedrum sounds better with them.
