I was trying to be quick and keep the video as short as possible, the other bearing in the magnetic coupler feels much better, but without a load on it it can be hard to tell if it is bad enough to cause driveline noise? I may try to remove that bearing also? But that will require taking a closer look and trying to figure out if it can be done without ruining the magnetic coupler. I also need to ascertain if the coupler is supposed to locked so solid without power to it? This old man cant compare to the torque a 2 ton plus vehicle puts out, but if the coupler is supposed to reduce torque to the rear wheels to provide better fuel mileage I would think I could at least move the coupler some???

Great video on the teardown. I have a few unanswered questions. The carrier is off my 09 Vibe replacing the CV axle seals, however there is an obvious leak on the coupling housing at the connection of the prop shaft thru the dust shield. After separating the coupling from the carrier, the pinion seal, although removed looked to be in good shape but I could be wrong. I thought the coupling side was dry, however there's evidence of oil in the coupling housing. Could it be the pinion seal, or is the coupler faulty since I'm assuming the coupler is a sealed unit with a wet clutch. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Apparently I cut the bearing info out trying to paste it to a new post :( But I am pretty sure that listing isnt even for a coupler. However it was the correct bearing size without the o ring seal or groove. My daughter is still driving the tar outta her! If U have that part info, could U repost it for me please. I dont remember where I found it now? Just so your car has the same electomagnetic coupler as my 09 Vibe/Matrix.

I found this video very helpful in diagnosing the noise in my 2009 Matrix and wanted to share some part numbers and my experience. The inside bearing was shot and the internal parts were banged up. The large front bearing was still in good shape. The inside bearing is a standard bearing, NSK 6911VV. The large front bearing is special, available from Toyota newest p/n 90363-95007. New bearings smoothed it out, but the rear wheels continued to lock up on tight turns. The connector had 13 volts power on start-up and .6 volts a few seconds after start-up. The differential appeared to be OK. I ended up replacing the coupler, new Toyota part number 41303-68013 and everything now acts normal. The new coupler is more expensive than the original and visually different in the front dust seal and the electromagnet housing which leads me to believe they have improved the design. The rear CV shafts had excess play, especially the drivers side so they were replaced at the same time. I found it easiest to drain the diff before removing the coupler, otherwise the oil drips for a long time after the coupler is removed. There are TWO washers between the coupler and the diff, the flat washer goes in first towards the diff then the bevel washer goes in. Grease at the top helps hold them in during assembly. I thought I kept track of the washers, but found the bevel washer in the bottom of the oil pan after the coupler was installed, hence why I mention it and suggest the grease to help hold it.

That was one expensive repair. Your bearing must have really been fried! It is really difficult to work on the unit without damaging the small wires to the electromagnetic coupler. Just replacing the forward facing bearing usually does the job. Mine is still purring like a kitten, knock on wood!

I wish it was just a worn front bearing, it was in excellent condition. The front bearing from Toyota is very reasonable, $28. I found the coupler mail order from a Toyota dealer for $1100. All the local stores did not even list rear CV shafts, Rock Auto had them for $75 each.

I tried multiple Toyota dealers, and online Toyota part stores and no one could get a bearing for the 09 coupler? Toyota had the bearings for the older Viscous coupler in my 2003, but not the Electromagnetic coupler? The EMC is an non serviceable part according to Toyota.

That's why I listed the part numbers. I found two other sites that were also very helpful, one was from Moscow and is where I got the part numbers, I listed the latest P/N in my post as the old numbers have been superseded: toyota-club.net/files/faq/04-07-05_faq_atc_eng.htm This video describes AWD, and it used a Venza in the video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIGqwdhyeaXbl7g.html The Toyota dealer said the bearing number did not match my VIN and there would be a 20% restocking fee if it was wrong, it was the right bearing. It is a special bearing made for Toyota, I tried our NSK rep from work and he had trouble getting me one, the NSK part number is 95DSF01. It is actual a very good price from the Toyota dealer, I paid more for the standard bearing from a bearing distributor. I was unable to find the Toyota part number for the 6911VV bearing. The Venza also uses the same coupler, the Rav4 is different. I agree on the wires, I would cut them next time and splice them upon assembly.

have you tried to apply voltage to the coil (I guess 12v) and see if it will release itself? I've seen electromagnetic coupler on different applications where the coupler is by default locked, potentially spring loaded with a clutch disc in between and when voltage is applied it will disengage. good luck

Watch the numbers on the video, cross reference the part numbers, I actually wound up paying less than $40 with shipping. Don't remember the amount for sure. I also had to buy a used axle and the front section with slip spline to tyranny wasn't quite the same, had to reuse my old front section from old axle.

Tom G - For my 05 escape beater I went to a junk yard and pulled a differential out of an 07 escape with 150k miles (practically brand new in beater years!) new seals and oil total cost about $200. If you don’t want to do that and truly keep the beater status I think you can remove the differential and drive shaft, disassemble the rear drive axle CV joints and screw the stub shafts back into the wheel hubs (you need these to keep the hubs from walking out of the knuckles) presto two wheel drive!

As stated in the video, I believe moisture gets into the the outer bearing. Also this is where the drive shaft attaches so there is probably increased stress. The key is to not try to remove the inner shaft, but to remove entire assembly from the housing.

Thanks, you are right. Mine is the viscous type. However ther is a rebuild sheet put out by Toyota walking you through the process. Still very expensive as they say you have to replace the outer "shell" (my words), a "wiper" seal and dust cover. I plan to try not buying the outer cover and replace with just new bearing and seal & dust cover. Bearing I pushed out of the old one is the same # as the one you describe in your vid. Thanks for the helpful video.

So what has everyone gotten to by now? Has anyone found the bearings? Have we applied 12v to the coupling to see its bench function? If you disconnect the connector does it throw a fault? Has anyone determined weather it’s for sure the coupling or the bearing?

It took me 7 weeks to find a used rear carrier assembly. When I got it for about 750 bucks I also needed axle seals which I found are on back order. I live in mass, I found one seal 30 miles from me and the next closer one was in Vermont. I would get searching for those. I got my carrier from LKQ out of south wick mass. They got it out of a car in Maine. We just put the carrier in yesterday. I will make a video and post it here to explain this further.

I'm curious what you wound up doing here. The shop I took my 2009 Vibe to said the electromagnetic coupling is shot, the rear bearing specifically. This bearing is apparently built into the assembly and can't be changed out by itself. So I need a new electromagnetic coupler unit which will cost me about $1,500.

engaging or disengaging the coupler isn't going to save you any fuel, what's gobbling up your fuel is all the extra weight you're dragging around.. extra 500 lb of driveline plus the added momentum of the spinning shafts, and energy turned into heat by the gear boxes.... If you're handy, you could remove all the Awd bits in the spring and reinstall them at first snowfall.

Both the same from different manufacturers. Test the voltage coming from the plug with the 4wd switch turned off. If it is zero volts than its a mechanical issue but the viscose coupling is tough as nails. If it's between 5 and 12 volts with it off then it's an electronic issue. Send to electrician. Trying to save people money
