TBH they were being a little too harsh on themselves: They've improved so much over the years, but their first videos weren't too far off from those scenes, and we all loved them anyway! Actually it doesn't sound that crazy, Cameron is a busy dude, especially around now while he's promoting Avatar 2, but he's a down to earth guy, he has great respect for passionate people in the industry, he probably would be into this kind of stuff. Besides... This channel is a medium for like-minded people, we're all interested in VFX, we're probably all at least a little bit curious about that and other aspects of Avatar 2, so him appearing on the couch to promote it, to dissect the visual effects and cinematography of his newest film and perhaps older ones too makes quite a bit of sense.

Jim Cameron in the 80s was a MASTER of seamless in-camera VFX and that's why ALIENS holds up better than films even 10+ years after. The combo of animatronics, rear-projection in camera, stop-motion used strategically... all these different techniques work perfectly together to sell so much realism that most films completely fail to capture.

Glad you guys talked about The Frighteners. The effects for the most part hold up, as does the movie itself. Really underrated movie with a great Michael J. Fox performance.

@@JohnnyWednesday Not really? Let's be fair the effort put into making a CGI video for a youtube video and for TV is wholly different, and working on an ongoing production means they get more streamlined with each TV episode done. But also we'll never see them in an Oscar nominated film mostly because they are a small studio, at most they might get hired as a subcontractor for an even bigger studio.
Yo the queen from Aliens deserves a deep dive on her own. The first time she appears on screen and you get an idea of how much movement there is in the head/face, how complicated the whole thing must be to operate. It really is insane.
I was going to comment that you should remake that early film but, after hearing you talk about it, it's such a beautiful monument to your early years as film-makers, it would be cheapened by re-treading that ground.
Seeing the Sabaton shirt is low key my favorite part of this whole video

It was definitely a revolutionary movie in some context
The Frighteners was actually pretty creepy, and a criminally underrated movie.
*some* of the "darkness" smoke effects from your movie are... eh - particularly the bits with the very visible, individual trails, like you mentioned. In *other* parts, though? *Genuinely really good.* It has a pretty good visual texture to it and the fast, darting movement feels really good. With so few people in 2008, on a budget? Impressive.
It Follows - the sand flying off the chair when hits something invisible though. Chefs kiss
The *last agni kai fight from ATLA* would be perfect for for the Animators React. It's so stunning! For the VFX series you gotta react to *Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia!* Also at the end of second one there's a big water creature, so it might be cool to see what you think about that. Maybe also, Max Schneider's Gibberish music video, the editing kinda breaks my brain there. And for stuntmen react It would be cool to see you react to the duel from "Potop", it's really good sword fight (tho technically it's sabers i think)
man Niko tearing up full of joy is just 🥺
19:00 "people liked it?! they didnt think it was dumb?!" i remember the first time i had this reaction. it's like the purest form of the validation artists get from people liking their art
I think the sand that was on the chair continuing to go forward after the impact that "bounces" the chair back was a nice touch. (3:50)
I liked that you guys let the end segment where you read comments just play out. I can see that a big part of the appeal of this series is that it's like we're all just hanging out, and those moments really stand out

The animation for the reaper in The Frighteners is surprisingly really good too. Considering the character was already a technical behemoth of a problem, it's amazing they still had time/skill to make the movements not look stiff or janky.
The Frighteners is an amazing movie that has never gotten the credit it deserves for VFX, story, acting...even VHS box art!!
Hi guys! Great video! In the It Follows segment @ 3:52 you can see the kid--after he hits the invisible subject with the lawn chair--he's leaning slightly forward toward the subject, and there is tension on the back of his jacket. He is clearly being pulled backward in a quasi ratchet pull gag, and they likely did some fx to blur him and make him fly back further and faster.
Your feature film is one of the things that got me into filmmaking and vfx, when I saw the footage back then. That's exactly when I discovered your channel. Thanks for everything. Love from Italy ❤️
The character's shadow moving across the sand in It Follows as they get pushed out of frame is a nice touch too !
I was genuinely impressed by their own film's smoke animation. Great job guys.
Before making Frightners, Jackson had to make Heavenly Creatures in wich he incorporated complex vfx scenes to imagine the characters fantasies. That film funded the start up of Weta Digital.
