The worst thing about the 20th anniversary of ET is that they removed the drawn weapons held by soldiers and officers and replaced them all with radios. Which means you end up seeing people "holding radios" while clearly in a "ready to open fire" stance.

@@ipraytovodka Yeah. You can see an example of it in the clip at 8:50. Notice how the guy on the left is holding his radio. That is very clearly a guy holding a weapon of some sort with his finger off the trigger (safe). As the kids start flying, notice the guy on the right. He's also holding a "radio", but for some reason it clearly exerts some serious torque on his wrist as he sort of "gives up". Why would a radio, that is just slightly taller than his hand, do that? For the record, I can actually tell you how they did the filming part of the ET clip since I'm the one in the grey hoodie (no joke). It gives you this weird whiplash of Shatner and crew crouching behind styrofoam rocks and holding plastic laser-guns on the one hand, and then space battles that are fully CGI on the other. @@jasonblalock4429 It would work better if the remasters weren't done 16 years ago. They sometimes look like PS3 graphics. The original model work wasn't awful but had some lighting issues that the CGI doesn't have, CGI has mostly better weapons effects and planets (especially the scale of planets while in orbit). I think the best use case for the remastered CGI was Tomorrow is Yesterday, specifically the slingshot around the sun, where the sun isn't seen at all in the original effects.

I'd rather they talk about TNG remastered, but that actually did the process they described of recomposting the existing FX composites, to varying degrees between seasons, most notably Season 2, which did not correct errors that had formed in the film negatives over the intervening decades, whereas the team on Season 1 did correct warped composites, noise, and errors that had occured in the original show.

CGI was just not that mature in the early oughts. If they redid the CGI ET today, with enough time, money, and love, it could probably look as close to the original puppet. I'm 40 so I can't speak to which version a kid, the age I was when I first watched ET, would prefer. But my vote definitely goes to the original. There's gotta be a happy medium. Keep the puppet from the original, add the composite shots from the 20th edition. This binary either-or for practical vs CG is a bad argument that _has_ to stop. There's just something about it. Did you ever see the Neverending Story? Tons of practical effects that were incredibly cool back then but look janky today. but despite the jank, that kinda thing has an unmatched charm to it. Though I think part of it is also one's own appreciation for that sort of thing. You end up focusing less on the jank and you instead think "Man, look at how clever they were back then and how much work they put into these shots."

Yeah like with Star Wars, using CGI to remove compositing flaws etc is fine, but we didn't need a CGI Jabba, that was just crap and every version of it is crap.
I saw E.T. at a drive-in theater recently. Honestly, the only effects that didn't look great were the flying shots. I do think the 20th Anniversary improved on that one area. But I don't think a computer-generated E.T. is an improvement. There's a palpability and a "there-ness" to the original E.T. that is essential to make us feel a connection to him.

All thanks to this videos, not that I want to be an artist myself but it feels good to be able to better appreciate the effort from artists working on this industry. Now, when a good MOVIE/TV SHOW comes out I´m usually asking myselft...HOW DID THEY DO THAT? *Great Work Guys!*
That car hit from Breaking Bad is a work of art. I am struggling to see the transition there. It is so well done, my brain can not subconsciously pick up on anything.
The best E.T. style CGI replacement for an anniversary edition I’ve ever seen was on the 25’th anniversary edition of ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’. They added shots at the end using CGI from the original story boards for VFX they had planned for but ran out of money to create. It all fit so seamlessly because it was supposed to be part of the story in the first place and it kinda felt like they’d completed something instead of just gratuitously adding on to it for no good reason. There were other shots too that got a makeover like the Klingon battle cruiser when it first meets VGER’s energy cloud and fires at it. All in all, a really great example of how CGI can add value to a story instead of detract from it. Hope you guys check it out someday!
How did I only now notice that when Nico is talking about the Ms. Marvel cut...they put in their own cut after the hand gesture. CLEVER! 13:50
13:49 cut the shot, hand animation. Nice cut with Nico’s hand movement 😄
I feel like you could do a whole episode on the car hitting a person effect and how it’s evolved. From the locked off shot of the silent ninja car that instantly appears from the edge of the frame (popular in the early 00’s) to the more difficult and believable effects of today.
I don't think that 3rd eye effect from the second Dr.Strange movies has been on this show yet, but it definitely deserves to be.
Back when I first saw that shot in Breaking Bad I thought it looked amazing, cool to see you guys finally cover it!
I re-watched that episode of Breaking Bad literally just last night and was thinking "hey that shot looks really convincing, I wonder how they did it".

I just saw an episode of Binging with Babish were he talked about his career as a commercial VFX artist before he got into making content. I think it would be so cool to try to get him on the show to maybe talk about his previous work or maybe some food VFX
I remember that shot of breaking bad blowing my mind as a kid. So simple, so visceral…
My favorite CGi deep dives are the ones like the Breaking Bad car hit that are sprinkled in to help drive the plot forward instead of being a big part of the production
Glad everything is okay after the unfortunate events recently, excited that VFX react is back on schedule!
Never miss an episode. Thanks for all the hard work, Crew 👍

Long time watcher, first-time commenter (and just subscribed too). You guys do amazing stuff and am always looking forward to the next video! While not a CG glitch, there are a bunch of glitches/errors in the lightsaber effects from the original Star Wars trilogy. I know you've covered lightsabers pretty thoroughly already, but there are some fun glitches to discuss from misaligned rotoscoping to the sabers swapping colors mid shot (from blue to red and vice versa) to the lightsaber beam coming out the wrong end of the hilt and many more. If interested I can send over some screenshots and timestamps.
So I didn’t expect that breaking bad shot to be cgi, I literally just finished rewatching it and I thought they were gonna talk about the plane crash, because I noticed how weird that shot looked but this I didn’t even think of how they did it. Amazing
Omg y’all FINALLY did another Breaking Bad scene! 🙌🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
so good. i'd love to see you all react to how psychedelics are portrayed in movies/ film. Movies like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Mandy or Enter the Void. Or pretty much any music video by ASAP Rocky because his production budget goes crazy sometimes.

Really glad they finally discussed the effects in the Alien movies. I personally like the effects in Alien 3: janky as they are, they were still able to show us the xenomorph moving in a way that was not obviously a guy in a suit and with much more detail than we saw in Aliens.
@windowsVD
Жыл бұрын
I don’t think it’s as bad as people made it out to be, but I don’t really think that the sacrifice is worth it either just to get more detailed movement. It’s same thing in Alien Covenant for me. Yes, there’s a lot of possibilities in terms of what we can see the Xenomorph do, but when the effect just isn’t good enough to make my eyes feel like the creature is actually there, it just takes me out of the movie. I’d rather have the limited movements from Aliens over what we got in Alien 3 and Covenant.
@romxxii

When I rewatched the original Alien, I was surprised at how much of it was just "guy in a suit" and how much _not_ showing it helped to keep the magic alive. Aliens had better suits, plus some puppetry with the Alien Queen. I think it's not until the Joss Whedon one where we get fully-CGI aliens that looked grounded in the scene, and even then not for every scene -- closeups were still puppets. Pity that movie also had the horrendous-looking hybrid. Oh and a batshit-insane plot.

"Oh gosh! That literally just felt like you-uhdoooooood..." I rewatched this part like 5 times.
Recently got a projector and made a home theather, and it is especially noticable on a large screen how much more enjoyable the practical effects are in a lot of these older films. That middle period of mid-90's into the 2000's where the CGI wasn't there yet but studio were moving away from practical stuff is the hardest to watch.
Yes, classic movies! Now that you’ve talked about Alien 3, please do a VFX artists’ reaction to Aliens: some of the best old-school effects ever captured on film!

I know it's called "good and bad CGI" but.... Everybody wants VFX! People just aren't excited by CGI.
Yall should really check out VelociPastor. There's a shot early in the film where they just straight up forgot to add a burning car so there's only a sound effect and words on screen describing what's supposed to be happening. Also the movies a gem

they didn't forget, it's a parody film
My parents have recently gotten into Once Upon a Time on Disney Plus and I would love to see y'all touch upon some of the good and bad CGI because some parts of the show The Magic that you use just looks bad but then they're able to create full CGI ogres that actually look really good
I’m 30 years old and to this day I cannot watch ET without getting nightmares. I had nightmares when I was a child and I get nightmares as an adult. That movie literally messed with my head.
The Princess on Hulu starring Joey King is chock full of stunts and effects that would be great for a Corridor Crew React!
When they killed off Newt and Hicks offscreen in the first five minutes I remember thinking 'there's still two more hours of this to sit through now?' The ambitious but failed VFX were just the icing on that sh*t cake of a movie.

Later Spielberg changed his mind and discarded the changes made in his original 1982 version of E.T. Besides the CGI stuff, there were some PC changes too (all guns had been removed from the film).
Very cool. @12:43 you show that they CGed the street sign (Decatur St). I live in Atlanta and love seeing locations I know and how they adjust it to be other cities... Like the side entrance to the Fox Theater. They call it the Egyptian Room. And it has been used at least three times in Marvel for different locations. A mosque in Ms Marvel
Personally I loved the jank old 80s ET just bc… that was the technology of the time and it still became a hugely great movie regardless even to this day it’s still a fun movie
I definitely prefer the nostalgia and visual effect of the old puppet ET, but the remaster definitely adds some nice visual smoothness.
In Lost in Space, Season 1 Episode 4 at around 23:45 just before the robot claps, his left hand disappears for a second. Don't know if that got mentioned already. Saw it a while back, maybe it's worth taking a look at. Great episode, as always. Always looking forward to your videos.
OMG, I don't know how I never noticed the Hellboy "T-pose", I watched that movie at least a dozen times as a kid. I guess I was always more distracted by the weird way that cogwheel centers itself and totally disobeys physics lol.
That breaking bad transition was great man! Perfect timing
I love how in the original ET flying bike scene, you can see through the bike's parts like the rear wheel which reflects the bluescreen like what is probably the rim (or maybe a reflective strip?)
Can you please talk about the Borg Queen entrance in Star Trek: First Contact; it's the shot when she is just a head and shoulders attached to wires being lowered into her body, it's still amazing!

Dont get me wrong i love seeing whats possible with CGI nowadays, but theres something very comforting about old janky VFX that just gets me.
11:52 I think the problem with the scene is not only that we can clearly that the girl is animated, but the motion blur looks really weird and it looks like she’s leaving a trail behind her.
You guys should take a look at the final scene of the 2002 version of ’the count of monte cristo’. When he sticks his sword in the ground, I’m convinced it fell over, because it looks like it turns into a still element that they try to hide behind him as much as possible.
E.T. was re-released in it’s original glory. No more CGI E.T. or walkie talkies. It’s amazing.
The transition from "yeah chemistry" to the breaking bad clip is amazing
KZread is REALLY chopping you guys up with commercials man but I love you guys none the less.
For the Alien 3 movie, the problem mainly was that the Alien puppeteering was done on a completely different location, meaning the lighting was in no way the same as the lighting on the actual set.

I like both versions of ET. The CGI ET freaks me out just a little bit less since his face is more animated. I would watch the CGI one more often when I was little, but the 20th anniversary edition also had deleted scenes added back into in the final film.
