As an old fart who went to *film* school and shot on film stock using actual, mechanical, frame registering cameras, I cannot stress enough how absolutely *INCREDIBLE* and bonkers that elevator shaft shot from Die Hard is. Jan de Bont is a certifiable mad scientist. We've definitely lost something as filmmakers moving to digital especially in the realm of cinematography.

  • @gr6e

No we haven't lost anything. Knock it off. There are more incredibly inventive filmmaking techniques now than there ever have been. Filmmakers have access to more effective, more flexible, higher quality tools and tricks than they ever have to tell their stories. You just cherrypick the best examples from "then" and the worst examples from "now" to justify complaining about something. Quit acting like more people being able to express themselves more effectively is somehow a bad thing.

  • @Joe-xo4yg

I don’t believe he claimed that more people being able to express themselves is a bad thing. Some old skills and perspectives grow and change with the passing of time, some get lost. Not necessarily a bad thing, sometimes somewhat sad Cheers & chill 🌻

I disagree with Jay, I did my audiovisual grad school on a time that we where going to digital for all the benefits. But it's clear to me that the inventiveness took a hit, the "we'll fix in post" became much more of a statement on set. When you had to think and engineer practical solutions, it was marvelous. Not that you can't apply the principals on digital, you certainly can. But most will decide not to. Most because of budget or lack of engineering prowess. But in the analog times, at least in my opinion, the motto was always: necessity is the mother of invention.

Moving from physical to digital means that some innovations that were used in massive amounts back when film was used can be replaced with digital methods. Miniatures and explosions? A 3d model and an explosion sim. They can redo it for no cost if they have to.

Another great forced perspective from Elf was when Buddy's father is on his back while he rides the bike. They actually had a sort of triple tandem bike set up, with Will Ferrell at the front and the dad right at the back so he appeared small, then had a kid in the middle seat who ducked down but kept his hands on Will Ferrell's shoulders to appear as the dad's hands.

9:35 - that motion blur is something the Blue Sky animators did for the Peanuts movie. They had to add in the black lines around Snoopy's feet when he does the "beagle dance." They also added in extra feet to sell the illusion. Very underrated, because people didn't realize the attention to detail to make the CGI "comic accurate."

In Gremlins during the stop motion that reveals hundreds swarming in, one of the street lamps goes out. The light on set actually did burn out, the animator was afraid he’d have to start over, but they said they’ll just add a sound effect of a light breaking.

Since you guys have done Elf and before you've done Iron Man, I challenge you to watch "Zathura", the film in-between in which Jon Favreau learned all the SFX techniques that would go on to make Iron Man so wonderful. It's a great mix of practical, models and CGI. Several characters are part costume and part CGI, leading to such joyous accidents as the robot that slips and skids because that's what the actor did. (The bonus features on that DVD taught me so much...but mostly, an appreciation for Favreau, who tries to NOT rely on CGI but uses it well.)

Merry Christmas Corridor Crew! So it's probably really simple but the Christmas effect I never understood is actually from the Rankin Bass Rudolph. I know they're all stop-motion however how do they create the scene where the Abominable Snowman 'sinks' into the water? I'm sure it's super easy but I can't figure it out

  • @EpicJosh84

if I had to guess, I'd say they have different models of the Abominable cut into different fractions and they're just setting them down (like taking off a Lego person's legs then their torso to make them disappear into the floor but more complicated)
