I'm glad to see some Power Rangers respect here. Usually "this looks like Power Rangers" is an insult, but those suit effects and miniatures are still really impressive in their own right. There's a reason why franchises like Super Sentai and Ultraman continue to use suits and miniatures to this day. There's a real art to it, even if you can tell it's a suit.

So, I think what separates the "dusting" effect they reviewed from Infinity War's is that Infinity War's effect feels like the volume is dissolving, whereas the one reviewed here feels like the surface is being dissolved with nothing behind it. The number of particles and their placement feels mostly 2D because it feels attached to the surface rather than the whole volume disintegrating. That's just my very amateur take so I'd love to hear others' thoughts.

  • @FriendsWithIssues

Fun fact: Pixar actually never uses motion capture for their movies. Like ever. The reason they included that note there in the credits of Ratatoullie is because the previous year, Cars lost an Oscar to Happy Feet in animation, and Happy Feet used mocap. The popular guess is that Brad Bird included that as an easter egg joke to knock on Happy Feet.

As someone who animated 3D (and 2D) on my Amiga in the early 90s, I can say that 3D animation tools make all the difference. Inverse Kinematics existed before that Power Rangers movie, but maybe it wasn't in the animation package they used for that scene, idk. But I remember seeing nurbs and edge splines instead of polys being new features. That was pretty cool then.

4:28 the roll is so smooth because those are 2 actors with costumes on. Compare the previous shot of the Purple mech-guy (I never saw this movie as a kid, I was born in '94 and only saw "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie" with that weird, yet sexy volcano scene) to the shot where you see the guy roll. The 2nd shot looks like a toy, while in the 1st shot it looks "metallic" and glossy. Idk why they didn't just use the costumes for ALL the effects (probably for time??) but it's for sure 2 guys in costumes on a green screen.

BUT it adds to the specialness of it all. There would be an episode released every Sunday evening on the lead up to christmas and thousands of kids would watch knowing that the weekend was over and it was back to school the next day but it didn't matter because Christmas was coming up.... Specifically check out the hand drawn flying eagles and the way Aslan turned the stone statues back into animals.

When you start the game floating in the ocean after your plane crashes during the opening cutscene, it took me a minute before realising the game had actually started and I was no longer in the cutscene. Those water effects blew me away. Also the wet hair on the characters in The Incredibles after their jet gets shot down in the ocean blew me away when that came out. What's with plane crashes and pioneering water special effects lol.
