VFR Flight Through Class B with ATC Communications
www.GroundSchool.com
Radio work is frequently a challenge for pilots and may cause them to steer clear of busy airspaces. This video takes you through one of the busiest Class B airspaces in the world and includes all the ATC radio work your heart could desire. Flight Following through Class B Clearance! Shot with six cameras, it shows stunning imagery of Atlanta and Hartsfield International Airport.

Couldn't figure out why controllers were laughing after you called for a class B transition starting at 3:57 - took a few listens. 4:18 ATC tells Cirrus "need your best rate of climb to 5,000, traffic 1 o'clock 5 miles eastbound a Seneca." Cirrus responds "Trying to get it up." Controllers cracking up the next two transmissions. Great job on the video, I used Gold Seal for my written and scored 92%. Highly recommended!

Thanks for posting this comment!! I missed that and omg I just laughed so freaking hard 😂😂😂😂
What a great video! I’m a student pilot and this showed me so much, I’m out of an uncontrolled airport usually, and it was very informative, very nice that you told us what you were thinking, adjustments you dealt with, thinking of ATC and quick response to them, great communication, and bonus was your landing round. Thank you!
absolutely fantastic, felt like I was in a classroom in the sky, loved it from start to end.
Flew freight into KATL back in the early 90s. Mostly light to med twins, 402,404,Commanders, MU-2s etc. Mixed in with the heavies was stressful as "keep your speed up" was continuous. 2 missed calls and you were kicked out of sequence. Many a time I would have a 747 dragging his feet and when those guys hit the L lights it was like the sun came out.Stay firewalled until flare, dump the flaps, nose forward and slam it down. Making the 1st turn was not a option. Spent 1/2 my life sitting on Dixie.
Thanks for this. I just got my part 107 and this is a great real life example for listening when people might be cutting it close to wherever I am. I would like to fly someday.. thanks for all these camera angles.
Thanks for your great videos. I'll never be able to fly but you are teaching me things I always wanted to know.
Great video showing the work needed for class bravo flying. Brings back fond memories of my time flying around PHX.

How can I send in a short video?
Great video. I'm a private pilot who learned to fly at a class D airport (Tamiami TMB), but never been through class B with communication yet. We have 3 class B's in Florida.. Miami, Orlando, and Tampa Int'l and this video gave me some confidence when I do. Thanks.
Very exciting to see how pros make nerve wracking radio and forward thinking look like “cake”! You are the man!
I used to think flying would be 'swanning around' and looking at the scenery. I found you were thinking and alert all the time in practice. You just showed me how much attention is needed in a busy airspace, and I'm impressed that you could run a commentary at the same time. You also taught me I could never aspire to being a traffic controller. Luckily I am now retired and can simply 'play' at my hobby via flight sim. I always get home safe, and my flying is largely free of fees and costs - even if I bingle. Your presentation was most impressive... Thanks.
Really enjoyed this video. Brings back memories of days gone by. Well done and very interesting. Beautiful scenery. Thank you!
Great video, im from Atlanta, used to come in and out of Winder and Dobbins in OV-1 Mohawks, have blown right across ATL like u did but at 145kts in an EMS EC-135 cleared to cross South to North at 700ft to Grady and Emory, good times!
well done...felt your heart rate approaching airport.. multi thinking...
Thank you from Roswell
Great video! Thank you for your time and effort to make and post these!
Appreciated the commentary and radio work. My nearest B is SFO
Great video! Training for XC next door at FFC and this helps with my comms. Thanks!
Learned a lot from this one. That 30 seconds of silence was GOLDEN😂. Almost makes the flight not fun with so much chatter. I guess that’s part of it though. Well done 👍🏼
This was very important when I first got my ppl, really getting tight on the radios is such a game changer. Watching videos like these with actual busy ATC and professional talking is huge!
Love the look down shots of ATL!
Very nice video. I'm a student pilot out of Concord NC (Charlotte), Class D Airport under Class B Airspace good radio communication is a must. I flying A Cherokee 140 which i pickup several months ago enjoying every minute.
As a new pilot these videos are a great help
Thank you for some great instruction. As you pointed out busy airspace radio transmission can be intimidating.
Always been averse to entering Class B VFR, but after watching your video, no longer ! The controller did hold on to you a bit longer than necessary but you had no space to let him know. Very nice and clear. Thanks.

Jos Fielden Right?!? Thought he might be parking the airplane before ATC let him go. I was like damn it would be nice to pop over and let local traffic know he was on the approach. He was in the damn pattern before he was able to call out his position.
Thanks for the ride and awesome communication with ATC!

Great pilot skills and video, just now found you on KZread. I’m a ppl with 900+ hours, always learning something, thanks.
This was a great video for Atlanta Class Bravo! Thank you for helping me brush up on my skills! This video really helped me today fly through Atlanta's Bravo
Fantastic video! Nice to see real life situations.
Thank you, this video was helpful to gain confidence in Class Bravo airspace! Greatly appreciated!
Great flight and narrative! Thanks for sharing! CYBL
Russ is a fun guy to be with, excellent video
Excellent video, took a lot of the mystery out of this kind of flight, great presentation and very well filmed. It is clear why you need to do your homework ahead of time. Thank you. In our old glider port we used to be towed up to 3000, which kept us below and outside of Class B, then we would release and thermal up once we went north and passed a water tower that marked the airspace boundary. Crude, but effective, though a lot of other VFR traffic would be skimming just below the floor of B, so you really had to watch for them. The point being that just because you are near a B boundary, or cleared to enter one, doesn't mean you should stop looking, as this video well illustrates.

Gliders are the best way to learn to fly, highly encourage all to find their local clubs @ ssa.org
thanks it was fun to listen to you talk to traffic
When he's talking to viewers , the radio talk blends in making it hard to tell what he is saying. Good video quality and altogether very good production. Thanks.
Thank you SO MUCH!
Excellent video. I have learned so much from presentation.
Jeez. That bravo is bonkers. The other day I was flying with a Friend we had waypoints to avoid bravo but had flight following. They ended up clearing us direct which was great. But wow it wasn’t nearly that busy. For a student I got some great experience that day. Pop up ifr into the destination airport, along with filing an ifr flight plan to head out. Due to a marine layer that came in off the ocean from 400-700’. Was wild looking. Love you guys. Of course I’m a gold seal student. Thanks to Dan Gryder one of my aviation hero’s.
As a local future pilot, i enjoy the your local color report.....
Excellent video / instructional experience.
Thank you for doing this, great video.

Also, glad you made the comment in “here comes the flash.” I know sometimes people want to add their own flavor, but it confuses those who are learning and it doesn’t stick to the correct technique. As soon as he said that I was thinking that is no, and you corrected it.
At one time made regular trips from Gaithersburg Maryland to Cape Cod and Ft. Lauderdale. These were VFR flights mostly. Always asked center at BWI for flight following. Once done never had transitioning issues with Class B airspace as they handed me off to inroute towers to destination. There is no reason not to ask for flight following.
I am a PPL-Student, thank you very much! :) Greetings from Norway.
Great video, very helpful! Thank you!
Great video. Thank so much!!
Naval Air Station Atlanta closed and property was transferred to Georgia National Guard in 2008-2009 time frame. I was stationed at NAS Atlanta from 2000 to 2003, good location to be at.
The radio is key info on this and appreciate it.
I have a friend who lives in OKC, OK. I would want to fly to PWA which is in OKC airspace. Your video made it easy how to comprehend. Thanks.
Takes the nervousness out of crossing Class B near a very large busy airport. Thanks for sharing that flight.
Great Video. Thank you :-)
I'm not a pilot but I found this video fascinating as a scanner enthusiast. Really great info for airband radio listeners. Thanks!
Thanks enjoyed the video
Great video. Thank you.
AWESOME thank you
I really enjoyed the video. I've never flown through class B. The radio work kind of scares me away.I'll watch this video a couple of times along with other flights through Controlled air space. Thank you for this video. would like to see more of them...
Great video, thanks for doing a class B airfield.... much appreciated
Thank u
Very enjoyable video. I like the "dont say flash" part on the ident comment. LOL LOL
Very good - thank you!
Great job on this production. Very informative. Gold Seal is also a terrific ground school. I stay subscribed to it even after getting my Private Certificate. It's just a very good reference and source for continuing ed. My Bravo is PHL and I've never really needed to go into it. Someday ...
Also at 16:40 I like saying “ident’ing”. You said don’t ever say with a flash... the trainer aircraft I fly sometimes has gremlins and doesn’t want to cooperate, letting ATC know I’m trying and there might be a problem.
Very Helpful, thanks!
Great video, thanks.
Nice. Clear comm Thanks
I've been flying around Chicago for 4 years now and I've not once been cleared into the O'Hare bravo. I've only made the request handful of times, though, and usually on early weekend mornings when they weren't so busy. Still, I've found that Chicago Center is really reluctant to handle VFR traffic. Getting flight following from them is probably 50/50, in my experience.

Declare an emergency and you will get in every time. The aftermath of this will not be fun, however.
AWESOME
I'm in flight school out of PDK at Centennial Aviation Academy, love hearing some comms from our planes :D (N6919J around 11:10)

Oh hi Christian lmao
Great video, watch the whole thing and learn a lot! - Gold Seal School Student 😇
Get video and always a good refresher. I wish you had been my CFI. I don't think you could have found a day with smoother air. From my visits to the Atlanta area, it seems a whole lot better to fly over Atlanta than to drive through it!! :)

That was really interesting, thanks👍
What a great video and an amazing guy🙏
That was great - thanks.
Hey there Russ ,had to thank you ,watching this helped me a great deal to understand how plane heading and traffic plus heading etc looks in a real or three dimensional sense...whereas before looking at flight maps I was just confused ,but thanks to this great video I had an AHA 👍 moment last night....👍🙏

"here comes the flash, don't say that" lol great video!
Well done 👍
That was really worthwhile Russ.
That works for me. Thanks.
Hi Russell, that video was fan freakin tastic, sign me up, thanks
It's hard for me I am in class B almost the minute I take off living right between Rochester and Syracuse so these videos are a big help
Very cool!
Great flight..
I'm confident that no one else will be commenting on this. But at 12:05 you can see one of those new diverging-diamond interchanges. The lanes of traffic actually switch sides to eliminate left-turn conflicts and turn the whole system into a 2-phase traffic light (which flows better than the standard 4-phase). Idk how many other traffic theory nerds are also into aviation, but the two go well together! It's cool to see stuff from the air that you normally only get to see in Cities Skylines and Google Maps.
great clinic thanks

Blaine, where are you doing your RPP? I completed mine out of CYBL.
Completely agree! Don't say "here comes the flash".
ULM student in Belgium. I have a long way to go.
Lol!!! I got out an old (2006) Atlanta sectional while watching this and it’s got what is now Atlanta Speedway (or Henry County) airport listed as Clayton County/Tara field… I did my primary flight training out of PDK in 2001-2002 but have been out of the cockpit for 15 years now. Looking to get back in and build a Van’s RV soon.
Inspiring
Very relaxed...cool. totally enjoyed the ride..!
Awesome video, well done and really informative as well. I agree with Mitko ATC seems to me was talking way to fast. Keep up the good work!
Ohhh SNAP! You're good.
26:18... I've been flying drones too much... I thought "oh man I'm over traffic, got to move over"

Drones.... that’s not a “pilot.” That’s an RC operator.
I enjoyed this video. A good friend of mine lives in OKC and also lives real close to a regional there than OKC international but the regional is inside the OKC airspace. My plan would be to fly to that regional and I guess I’d be doing the same as you did here over ATL?
Awesome. This helps me know what to expect. Thank you!
just subscribed!
