This is one of my favourite scenes. Where there's no schism, no sugar bowl drama (for now), no poisonous darts, no death, no enemies, no fires, no medousoid mycelium, just them sitting together as friends enjoying the opera.

Lemony is a pretty honorable guy when you think about it, he loved Beatrice so much that he dedicated a large part of his life to find out what happened to her children so he could protect them. He cares so much about Violet, Klaus, and Sunny because they are her children even if he couldn’t be their father.

(spoiler warning btw) Not just that, he also respects and admires the hell out of the Violet, Klaus, and Sunny. Especially in the books, not just for their amazing talents and their determination but for how they constantly stick to their moral principles. Compared Lemony to when he was Klaus’ age at the end of All The Wrong Questions he gets so angry at the villain Lemony start up kills him. Lemony thinks so much higher of them cause they never resort to that. (well maybe sunny would, if Violet and Klaus weren’t there she would start biting anyone who pissed her off.)

I really feel bad for Olaf. He had everything, a fiance, a loving respectable father, hes wealthy and he was a good man. One unfortunate event lead to another cause he could no process his grief, he lost everything. Obviously, every bad thing is still his fault and its inexcusable but you could see how he wasnt always a monster before

I wanna see a series about the VFD, pre-schism. It could be a family friendly espionage series, which showcases the VFD in its heyday. This show touched on pre-schism VFD (as shown in flashbacks like this), but I think the VFD deserves its own show.

The closest thing is All The Wrong Questions (ATWQ), which is a prequel series to A Series of Unfortunate Events (ASOUE). It has Lemony Snicket has the main character and we see references to other characters from ASOUE. ATWQ is set in Stain'd-by-the-Sea, though but we learn a bit more about VFD.

This scene is just heartbreaking. Because of a sugar bowl: 1. Bertrand, Beatrice, Mr. Quagmire, Mrs. Quagmire, Jacques, Kit, Dewey, Gustav, Monty, Josephine, Georgina, Larry, Olaf, Olaf's father and countless other people died 2. Violet, Klaus, Sunny, Quigley, Duncan, Isadora, Carmelita and the other snow scouts were left orphaned Now I'm starting to think maybe Beatrice and Lemony were the actual villains all along.

I really like this scene, seeing the inner details of the VFD. However, I don't like that they changed the origin of the schism in the books. In the books the Schism started when Kit was 4 years old, not when she and all of them were adults. The changing of the purpose of the sugar bowl here in the tv series was also something I thought diminished the importance of the sugar bowl presented in the books. I also just realized that the VFD was basically made up of upper class / rich individuals who were all inter-related by blood or marriage. Looking back in human history, that doesn't necessarily speak to morally just principles.

ikr in the books, it was so mysterious but I was also guessing the same thing, immunization against the medusoid. The books were so much more sinister and depressing (mostly because the book olaf doesnt have the same charm as Neil Patrick Harris) but also because most of the facts about the VFD were really just vague. Youll have to read it over and over again to appreciate it entirely. Not to mention they went through so much worse in the books Also yeah the schism started really early but it catalyzed after all the death of the chief, aka. Olaf's father

  • @lenanana8

@@The_Queen_of_Hell I totally agree with that, the books were so much more grim. But now that I've reread them as an adult I can see that Lemony Snicket highlighted really well how grim, dark and evil the world can be and how adults can be ignorant about it. And in a way that was not ridiculously traumatizing for a young audience.
