You can add AESA radar, conformal fuels tanks and any other gear you want to it, but you can't upgrade the 1960 thinking behind it, unfortunately.

Just a waste of taxepayer's money. Like the F-35. Specially the conformal fuel tank. Just useless for the range of F-14B and D. The F-14 was too much maintenance for too little flight hour. And I think the navy did a big mistake by sticking with the TF-30 engines, they should have invested more at the beginning for F100DFE or F110. It would have save a lot of airframes and pilots/RIO from death.

Tomcat21 would have been the Flanker SU-33/SU-35 killer. It already had an incredible airframe, extremely powerful GE-110 engines and digital avionics. F-14 could pitch so hard that it did not even need thrust vectoring to pitch. All it needed was newer radar system, better digital avionics, more FBW systems, Grumman was planning on increasing the thrust even over 30,200 lbsf the F-14D already had to around 32,000 lbsf in zone 5 afterburning from the GE-F110 engines. It would have been the best gen 4.5+ fighter/interceptor.

I don't recall if on a cruise or work ups. I was attached to hornet squadron on IKE. Tomcats launching off of the bow and I knew something was up as more than normal amount of peeps up on bow. I watched #2 cat launch tomcat and fly away. Then cat #1 launched, cleared the bow and went vertical with burners (F110 engines). Very cool to witness. Then boss comes over the 5mc and says, 'hope you enjoyed that because you won't ever see that again.'

They say the F-18 Superhornet is superior to the F-14 Tomcat but I had an opportunity to be around the Tomcat working at NAS Jacksonville during the 80s. Ive seen demos of the Superhornet and the Tomcat and it seemed to me that the Tomcat out performed the Hornet. At NAS Jacksonville the Naval Aviators used to practice touch and go with full afterburners. The noise was off the charts.

She was such a beautiful airframe… too bad she drank just under seven gallons of JP5/sec at full afterburner. When I was in we had the D, she was a dragster and a beauty. Too many man hours per flight hour and a 1960s design (technology) ended her wonderful run. The D was where it was at, the A model was underpowered and prone to compressor stalls at higher angles of attack. The D was a fire-breathing dragster. Cutting edge at the time. The MiG-25 couldn’t hold a candle to her…

The Cat is my favorite plane of all time as well but you have to understand that both the super hornet and lightening are better platforms!, there will never be another variable sweep wing fighter. It is old technology which cant carry anything on its wings and no longer has any advantages. I would be more than happy to be stuck with the 18 and 35 which are both amazing!!

@@tomdtom5407 You are correct in that matter and I should have been more precise in my thoughts. I will do so now. I was speaking of true air superiority fighters and true fighter aircraft. Both the F-111 and Tornado are truly Bombers and were excellent in that role. When you have a true fighter with variable sweep wings that have armament stations on its wings it is just simply too many moving parts to keep the aircraft aerodynamically affective as a Fighter. This is why the US navy did not choose the F-111 and waited for the Tomcat design which had no weapons on the wings and the Airforce knew they had the F-15 coming
