Veteran's Share Their PTSD & "Coming Home" Stories

We partnered with the National Academy of Sciences to honor the veterans who have sacrificed so much to serve their country. Unfortunately, many Veteran's find themselves without the resources to more easily transition back to civilian life after their service. Hear these veterans talk about the challenges they faced upon returning home. Visit the National Academy of Sciences at thesciencebehindit.org/

Just broke my heart 💔 when Raymond said he returned home from the Korean War at 1am and had nowhere to go & no support...had to hitchhike to Southern California 😭. After all he gave and risked his life 🥺...this was his thank you? 💔! His ears ringing and suffering with PTSD for so long, alone. Thank you, and bless you, especially, Raymond, and your family. ❤️❤️❤️

Veterans in Crisis treated as Criminals only furthers the CRISIS!!!!!! I am reaching out to you as a veteran with major concerns with the government's systemic failures and the physical trauma caused to veterans due there severe lack in education. I am truly disheartened and at a loss for words. I am specifically reaching out to you because I believe you are one of the few with an intelligence level that may understand. I have assembled all my data as clearly as I could on a website. Please review Thank you. Www.usvaw.org So the basic interpretation of what you speak. The V.A wants depressed toxic veterans for the sake of studies and profits. The VA does not want uplifted, happy, pain relief for veterans by using simply 2 atoms found abbundent in nature and whip cream and legal. 1 Hydrogen atom and 2 oxygen atoms. My dad served in the Navy from 68-72 USS Gurke DD783. Whenever I ask him about serving he always tells me how important it was to him and how much he loved it. Depending on how the next year or two go I might enlist. We need as many good men in this world and the United States military helps forge those men. Also Raymond or anyone on the team if you are reading this thank you so much. My grandmas husband is a Korea vet. He has constant ringing and humming from the shelling on his hill. The sacrifices both physical and spiritual you boys gave is hard to put into words. You and your friends are 100% responsible for every generation of South Koreans who have known little want, fear, or pain. Korea vets don’t get anywhere near as much credit they deserve for saving tens millions of lives. Thank you so damn much sir.

I'm a Vietnam nam , who came back , suffering from PTSD and drug addiction. Being spit on as i walked off the the termanal. Now where to turn , with no moral compass. So i became homeless for 36 years. Dying from liver failure , unable to walk , some lady found me in the bushes. She physically drug me out , for i wasn't able to walk. She took me to the hospital where i spent 2 months of operations. The same lady too took me to a shelter where i was bed ridden for 3 months. That lady's name is Anna who happened to work for VOA at that shelter. She got me housing and VA benefits.PTSD is solitary confinement inside your own head. I was so lucky to have Anna and tbe VOA to help me , because the VA dose not try to locate any vets in need.and you have to fight tooth and nail to get help by your self

Man, I've been in a similar situation... Except I wasn't homeless, close. I lost my marriage, vehicle and most anyone or anything I cared about over the course of the decade after my last combat tour. But I picked myself up a couple of years ago, cleaned myself up and have been doing better. Glad you got helped and hope you have a better future... You deserve it man!

@@victorglaviano thanks brother ! I’m doing better now ! The Volunteers of America took real good care of me ! They sent me to Florida to take some Moral Injury classes , which did wonders ! And I now work for them at a local homeless shelter , doing out reach , doing the same thing they did for me ! Going to homeless camps and signing them up , to get them into shelters , and let the learn the tools to get a job and into housing ! Life’s good , and even though I’m terminally ill , I’m not sitting on my ass , so drunk or high , I can’t even crawl out of the bushes ! Now I’m housed , got a job , own two vehicles that run good , helped my daughter get a car , and even able to give my ex a grand or two once in a while , since I never helped out all those years ! So you have a good day my friend , peace out !

I have more respect for veterans who served - active duty, reserve, JAG, every branch - than anyone else. "Thank you" isn't sufficient. What veterans and those who were incarcerated have in common is the return to a completely changed world full of people who may no longer have anything in common with them, or worse, no further desire to know them, let alone information about what they experienced. It won't happen under the current US "Administration," and programming, support, and treatment for veterans must be one of the top priorities. Thank you, gentlemen. Much gratitude, even more respect and support.

The government treats these amazing people like trash. Use them up and throw them out. The citizens are now trying to help these people. But it's the government that owes these people more than this. They should be paid for the rest of their lives. They should be GIVEN a home with some land. They should be given degrees based on their service. They should come home to jobs or offered financial assistance to start a business. THEY SHOULD NOT BE treated this way. They need therapy and support. It's just heartbreaking.

At least the people with horrible injuries and missing limbs, should be given a home and everything. God bless the organizations that raise money and give these people homes, but they shouldn't have to beg for it, you really absolutely correct. I am a combat veteran and over the past decade or so, it was tough at times, cost me my marriage, nearly my house and my vehicle. But I have all my limbs and fought my way back, so I don't feel I need a free home but seriously injured people do and it's the right thing to do! Thanks for your care and concern!

Mental shocks can be felt early in life. Even in infancy. The damage is traumatic & can cause life long stress. Here’s a poem with an implied cure. Poem's title is “The New One’s Center Had Moved.” The new one’s center had moved. The infant’s place of anchor had gone. Neither the boy nor young man knew. Their lives were marked as well. All lost to empty time of living, Where wisdom & books have no meaning. They each looked to the man to be. “Grow up,” The man yelled. “Look out for yourself.” They all wanted a way back, Back to the place of beginning. They asked a fix from him. “Between the rising & setting sun,” He exclaimed, “Go to the beginning there. Breath out the flames which burn your heart. There your body & voice of being can be found. A life of quiet, joy & peace.” Hurry - The old man is coming!

No one ever needs to thank me for the service which i was born to do. But the sacrifice....i have debated if it was worth it. I have contemplated ending it, i drive at deadly speeds, i often place myself in situations that can kill me, i even taunt the gangsters/dealers, etc. to put me out of my misery. I have yet to find the man with enough balls, to make me feel so lucky.

Yea bro, similar situation! But you know what it took me over a decade and losing most everything and everyone to figure out, someone, in fact probably many people care about you and love you, we just can't see it and focus on stopping the pain we feel and try to fix it the way we know... With more violence and force! But there's better ways and sometimes it's ok to let someone help you, it's hard for us, but make that step cause there are people who care!

Pretty cool... At least you have some kind of support and people who understand you, many times I haven't had that in the workforce, in life in general or marriage... But, as a fighter, I always look at life as a fight, I don't give up or lose! Over a decade or so since I've last seen combat, I will say time does help to heal, but it never goes away, you just learn to accept you're new normal! There's a general moment of silence at 11:11 on November 11th each year but it isn't an official, national moment of silence. The only time I can remember one was after September 11, 2001. I believe it was the 13th, maybe 14th, that President Bush asked for a national moment of silence. I was working at a grocery store and I was the person who had to get on the PA and announce we were observing it. It was so surreal.
