I struggled with feeling "smart enough" to go to vet school (or med school), for a long time. So much so, that I didn't go to vet school until I was in my 30s. 😊I'm in the US though, so our education system is a little different (we don't go to med/vet school, right after high school). Animals really are the best. 😊

7:41 " either if you graduate as a doctor or a vet". No disrespect at all, I love your channel but this is why we aren't respected as much in the medical field because we don't even refer to each others at doctors. I think you meant " a physician or a vet". Love how you shared your story and shared the pros and cons, can’t wait to complete undergrad and apply to veterinary school!😊

OMG Jess I felt like you were talking about me! I am so stuck between vetmed and medicine and also thinking about biomedical engineering! I'm from a physician family so medicine was kind of the default option for me. I grew up doing first aiding at school and loved it. It was gratifying to help people at their worst moments. But it just didnt feel right. i did veterinary work placements and LOVED it! I totally agree with all the points you made about vet med! specially the flexibility vets have in terms of work like being able to do surgery, clinics and the possibility to go down the research path. also being able to work in conservation. But with my A/L results i got into med school (it's free in my country). I can appeal and chose vetmed too but no one supports that choice. I'm a little skeptical of taking tht jump cuz i want to apply for specialty training abroad after vet school (we don't have specialty training here) but the vetmed program is not accredited so I need to do all these expensive, long licensing exams. if it wasnt for that i'd already be signing up for vet med in a heart beat! and all this time i still LOVE biomedical engineering too! I'm so stuck and I'm running out of time to decide😓 I just wish the universe can send me a signal my way too, just like it happened to you🤞🏻🙈

I did some research for my Senior Assessment, and found that many individuals who go to medical school in order to become a surgeon or some other high-status medical position tend to have more of an attraction to the status itself than the actual work. This is not true of every med student, without a doubt there are many who truly have a passion. But for those whom lack the passion, the work is either means to achieve the end or a byproduct (whether its positive or negative depends on the individual) Whereas almost every veterinary student has such a strong love for animals, and that's also why vets tend to have depression and suffer from burnout, because their passion to their work and their love for their patients hurts them when they fail to save one, or when they fail to achieve what their passion demands from them. Vets have a much stronger emotional connection to their work, and so it hurts a lot more. I had dogs as a kid, and the emotional attachments I formed with them trumps any possible attachment I could ever have with any person. I don't love my friends as much as I loved my dogs. And that's not to say I don't love my friends, but to stress just how much I loved those slobbery pups... May they rest in peace.

Vet school is definitely harder!! I did my apprenticship in Germany and became a vet nurse (my german wasn't that great and I didn't think I would be able to survive at uni - english being my first language). Then I got into Med, but didn't get into vet. So I started Med. Did four semesters before I gave up. I hated the fact, that I had to touch people. I tried again...and got into vet eventually. Now in my seventh Semester (we have 11). Uni over here doesn't cost anything. I thiink this was a key factor in me changing my degree. I had really only lost time and didn't have a massive debt to deal with. I don't regret my decision at all. I would never go back. Yes, you don't earn a lot...especially when you compare yourself to a human doctor. Doctors look down on you (although you tend to know more than them). But I can't wait to graduate and to start working in the field.

Cleaner, teacher, physician or veterinarian. Rich or poor. Employed or unemployed. Whatever your station in life, you should always respect each other. It takes a certain amount of arrogance to believe just because you have a good job means that you should be respected more. Don’t pursue a career for status. Pursue it because it is something you’re passionate about and can see yourself doing.

Hi Jess! Thanks so much for this video. I am currently in my last semester of Pre-Med in the US. Ever since I was in middle school I thought that I wanted to go to med school to become a dermatologist. I have worked at a dermatologist office for about a year and loved the easy going lifestyle. I find myself now stuck between med and vet school because I love animals more than anything. I have grown up fostering animals, and have about 6 rescue animals at home. I always found myself really happy after fostering a sick animal back to good health. The only thing that made me think I couldn't become a vet is my strong emotional attachment to animals. I get very sad about animals dying, even ones on the side of the road, so I can't imagine seeing animals that just got hit by a car Would you be able to share about your thoughts on this? Do you get very sad seeing seriously injured animals? Or seeing animals being euthanised? I feel as though I could make much more of a difference in my life by becoming a vet rather than a dermatologist

  • @jesscliffee

    @jesscliffee

    2 жыл бұрын

Hi Karina! I definitely relate to this, seeing sick and injured animals is really hard for me, but what makes it better is knowing that with my training I can do my best to try and help these animals. As far as euthanasia goes, I see it as giving peace to animals who are suffering, and we are privileged to be able to give these animals peace. I think it is an incredibly rewarding career.

Everyone I know has a much more favorable opinion of Animal Doctors than Human Doctors. The former diagnoses and treats their patients as a whole. The latter sees us as body parts since they've specialized themselves so much and prescribe what is dictated to them. Because of this the vast majority of people above a certain age are condemned to suffering all the time. The reason Vets earn less is because animal owners typically pay out of pocket for the service. Doctors' salaries took off when the majority in this profession decided to go from generalist to specialist and the gov and insurance companies inserted themselves between the patient and doctor.

Hey! Thats okay, you've still got time to discover what you want to do. I'd highly recommend work experience in both fields, it may help you to realize what you love.

Thats tough! But if you train to become a veterinary physiotherapist, nurse, or technician- you can work with animals and never have to be involved in surgery

Hi!! I’m about to go to college and I really want to be a veterinarian! How long does it take to be a vet in Australia and New Zealand? Can you discuss tuition fees and other expenses?🥺 Thank you so much!

Hey! It takes 5 years to become a veterinarian in New Zealand, and i'm not sure about Australia. Massey University's website has a bunch of information on fees, but domestic fees are around $13k a year, and international around $60k I think! Living costs are quite cheap here where i live too!

@@jesscliffee Aaaaaahhh thank you so much!! It takes 6 years to be a vet in my country but the entire course immediately turns you into DVM so the pre-vet thing in other countries confuses me a lot 😅

I entered university in 1969. I had no idea what I would study. I only knew it would be in the sciences. I met a third year undergraduate student in pre-veterinary medicine. I grew up on a dairy farm. He said I would be a nature veterinarian. I started pre-veterinary medicine my second year of college. In my naïve mind, I had no idea what I had gotten my myself into. First, your grade point average needed to be 3.5 or better to have a good shot at being admitted to veterinary medical school. Next, the course of study was 7 to 8 years of university back then. Now, it is 8 or more years. In the US even then, the cost of education was very high. It was especially high compared to a veterinarian's earning potential. Our tuition was comparable to medical school. In veterinary medicine, you will be working with people. Sometimes, my job seemed like veterinarian/psychologist. A veterinary performs services and procedures at a fraction of the pay of medical doctors. I owned my own clinic and pharmacy. I earned the pay of a nurse in medicine. I eventually became a Veterinary Medical Officer in the USDA supervising meat inspection in a processing plant. Meat inspection was looked down on in veterinary medical school. I was content at doing the job. i retired at the job after 29 years.

Jess Cliffe yes. I think exactly like you hence I feel so identified with you. I’d rather work with animals but vet school in the US is extremely expensive and vets don’t make that much money to pay the loans back. This is what’s holding me back but like I said I feel very passionate about being a vet. Sometimes I think med school would be better for vain reasons. I just want to work as a med or vet so I guess I’ll have to decide soon

In all honesty I felt the exact same way about the money situation, but if you really are passionate about vet school try not to let this influence your decision. It really doesn't matter in the long run about the money if you are doing something you love, as cliche as it sounds. I wish you the best with whatever you decide!

@@jesscliffee I've been watching a lot of national geographic videos and I also wonder why the heck I'm thinking about med school lol Animals>humans all day!. I think it comes to what you talked about, the prestige of an MD, that's what makes us think about going to med school. Vanity shouldn't be the reason for going to med school... the debt-income ratio is what worries me tbh but if I'm accepted to vet school which I already had the interview, I am going in!!!! I can do my clinical year in the U.S. or U.K and New Zeland. I am U.S. citizen but id would to go overseas to do my clinical year
