Last week the DVM on staff asked for 40mEq of KCl for 100ml of Norm-R and I had the hardest time figuring this out. The concentration we had was 2mEq/ml. Can anyone help with that formula for future reference? Thanks in advance!

Hello, thanks for watching! I believe your DVM meant that they wanted 40meq KCL/L, and either add that to a 1,000mL bag, or calculate what that would be for 100mL (bag or burrette). I know meq can he confusing, but luckily KCL is 2meq/mL which means that you just divide 40meq by 2. So 40meq=20mL of KCL per L of norm-R. So you can use a proportion to find that amount for 100mL. 20mL KCL/1000mL = X/100. 100 x 20÷ 1000 = 2mL of KCL. So you would add 2mL of KCL to 100mL of norm-R to get a ratio of 40meq per Liter. Hello! I'm not sure how to help, are you asking for basic medical math help because k-12 math wasn't easy for you? I would advise watching this intro video as well as some of the other math videos I have on here, and practicing some problems along with them until you get the hang of it. Also, Vet Tech Prep is a great resource. If that's not working then I'd maybe suggest a private tutor? That can really make a difference! Good luck, and thank you so much for watching!

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with the process in Canada, but in the US, Side courses taken do not count for anything regarding your board exam; it's just about prepping before it. I would recommend taking a Veterinary Technician program to learn everything required, and look into your local governing board regarding requirements
