Vestibular Disease (often called a “Stroke.”)

Good ole Vestibular Disease!
You may also hear vets refer to this as idiopathic vestibular disease, old dog vestibular disease, or a stroke. It’s a fairly common issue in older dogs, at least in my world of emergency medicine.
Hopefully this video helps sort a few things out for anyone that’s had/has a pet with this condition, and still had some questions!

Our collie had vestibular disease, MedVets had him for two weeks and determined it was idiopathic. He never recovered, they did every test and scans, but he developed pneumonia. So with no cure or diagnosis or prospect of recovery and 14k later we had the difficult decision of euthanasia. He was old when we adopted him and only had him for two years but he was a beautiful soul we still miss to this day. We are blessed to have dogs that are in need. We have had many and we have the means to see there last days are their best.

I need to say that your channel and your content is wonderful. I’m so sorry that I missed it prior to finding it a couple days ago. You’re hysterical in your videos and information that’s given is pertinent Germaine, but this particular video the information was exceptional. Thank you very much for the work you’re putting into your channel and for your videos, and also for the work you put into taking care of all the animals you do.

Thank you very much for your kind words! You don’t know how much they mean to me! I may not be popularly viral with millions of followers, but I’m glad people still find my channel to be entertaining and educational! I started to help teach people while making them laugh, and if it does that even for one person, I’d call that a great success!

I’ve had two cats that have experienced this, and it’s scary! Both times it was due to an ear infection. It’s scary but knowing that it’s not life threatening was a huge relief. Both times it fortunately passed.

One of my dogs has had this happen. We thought it was a stroke and it was going to be his last night on Earth because he was having such a hard time but once the meds kicked in, it took just a few days for him to be back to normal in behaviour then a bit longer for the rest of the symptoms to die down. It was basically described to us as he was having extreme motion sickness. He still has a headtilt at times but he is otherwise perfectly okay. Every bit of time with him as long as he is happy is worth having.

I’m a little surprised you didn’t talk about ear infections “hear”. Also differentiating syncope. I’ve had a lot of owners say their dog had a stroke on a walk after getting stung by a bee, but not actually witnessing the sting.

My late dog surcome to that..... She was 15 years though. And my tomcat had something like it after he got into a fight with a giant other cat and got bitten shortly in front of the ear and the tooth punctuated something that f****d of his ballance for a week. But he dragged himself home and I found him and took him to the vet. It took years from him but he is fine and also now 15.
