You have to flush the trans in any vehicle that you actually use. As a Automotive engineer I don't give two $h!t'$ what the OEM says about service intervals. There is no such thing as a "life time fluid". In his setup and use case I would be flushing the trans ever 45-50k miles, if he tows above 30% max tow capacity twice a month at least then every 35-40k miles. Hell Ford use to have their trans on a 30k max service interval for severe duty use, EG operation in High temp envro's, Long heavy towing, and dusty envro's with a normal trans flush being 45k. The new fluid is good for a little longer service life but not a 150k or 200k which is what Ford is saying now. Hell the reason the Ecoboost's are having issues is because of the oil change intervals, I have seen 3.5L Ecoboost with the ECU saying 45k on an oil change. That engine failed at 90k, a turbo engine should never see more than 8k between oil changes and for long life 5k max and use full synthetic of the highest quality. I also recommend Lucas oil additive (OG if using 30w or higher, Synthetic if using below that) as it helps reduce dry start, and most wear is at first cold start of the day.

I changed all the fluids in my 18 f150 at 42k miles. I don't agree with following "life time" fluids at all. Purely designed to reduce it's life, especially with towing.

@@omardevonlittle3817 you are lucky. I bought a car that hadn't had the trans fluid changed in 200k miles and it was flipping disgusting. Black as diesel engine oil. When I changed it a layer of clutch material sediment settled to the bottom of the milk jugs I stored it in. But that's just a little car, you aren't working the heck out of it towing on thousand mile trips. You have to maintain your vehicle if you use it hard.

Hi folks - I'm Warren from the video. Happy to answer questions as they come up. To address a few things already in the comments: Weight & GVWR - 9400-9500lbs is my max all-in weight when loaded for a hunting trip. It includes 250+ lbs of recovery gear, people, dogs, full gas, 250 qt yeti & ice for an elk. Agreed that more weight stresses everything out, but that's why I bought a super duty. Unlike, say, a tacoma, many of the key components in the truck are the same as configurations with much much higher GVWR & GCWR. Note also, when I'm towing, the truck has much less weight in it, and I air up the tires. I've checked my weight & axle balance on CAT scales before every long towing trip I've taken and I've never been near my max axle weights, GVWR, or GCWR. My truck is still under the powertrain warranty. Will Ford still honor it? We'll see. But I haven't done anything that they don't do in their commercials or advertise these trucks for. Fuel economy - The godzilla is highly dependent on how & where its driven. I average about 11.5 mpg, that's mostly driving quickly on the highway, through the mountains. I've gotten as high as 13.5 mpg on a long highway trip, but that was only doing 65 mph on the highway in flat country with no wind. It also burns alot at idle, so it burns a lot idling through the city. If you let it warm up in the winter, it will drink enough to affect your trip mileage.

It is outfitted with a headache rack, huge rat pack bed tool box. 3 smaller rat pack single drawer tool boxes, these boxes are stuffed with tools. Has a rack in the bed that hold 4/5 gallon Jerry cans for Anti freeze, screw oil, methanol and pink antifreeze for compressors. These trucks kick ass. I have it running all day! Best tires for quiet and longevity and excellent offroad getting my trailers into my muddy jobsites. The suspension is soft riding almost like my GMC 1500 and the springs are progressive when loaded up with stuff in the bed or towing. They even stiffen up some when cornering faster than I should be. Almost 48k on the odometer and the truck has been trouble free...and in 3 payments paid off. I normally would get a new truck but I believe I will keep her another year or two.

Not sure if speedometer calibration was done initially after installing the 37’s, but it matters as you would’ve been essentially in a taller gear all along that could hurt the transmission. Depending on how the dealership handles it, I would plan on trying to fix it myself by calling 5Star Tuning, getting a tuner, calibrating for the tire size and speedometer correction. With the updated shift points air and fuel delivery it may will clear this issue up.

Your assessment is 100% spot on. I hate assuming and we should all know what that word actually means. That being said I would be surprised if TFL would pony up the funds for this truck, up-fit it with a top of the line Carli suspension system additional expensive accessories but not program the corrected tire size in applicable ECMs. It would almost be more plausible that after the fact, a repair shop flashed updated software and failed to enter the larger tire size.

This is heavy duty truck meant to do heavy work. Ford has had so many quality issues over the last few years. They had more recalls in 2022 than any other manufacturer and it's not even close. Their own CEO has admitted they have a quality problem that will take years to fix. This truck has not had that hard a life. Only has 50k miles and this transmission should not be malfunctioning this early. Hopefully a fluid and filter change clears up these issues. If that tranny needs rebuilding that is a major fail on Ford.

I'm very sure that it's an issue with the maintenance that he's been doing, the reason is that since he's offroading and has that extra weights on the back that changes the maintenance category from regular to extreme usage which requires earlier fluid change intervals. With what he's been doing and all the of roading that he has been doing I would have told him to go use the heavy use/ extreme usage category of the maintenance schedule! Most people don't know that witch would require him to look at the engine idle hours and use that for the maintenance issues. But the issue with this transmission is the cdf clutch is going out, thats what may be going out. This is from some one that works on ford's

I have the exact thing happening on my 2020 F350 with the 7.3. When it’s in 10 gear randomly it’s like you lose power no matter what you do with the gas pedal nothing happens, then all the sudden it will downshift. I also have the clunk going from park to drive or park to reverse. The dealership will not acknowledge the issue with the shifting and keep telling me it’s normal, but the adaptive learning transmission seems to be a huge issue and has been for years as far as I can tell. The dealership is addressing the clunk issue and have has parts in order now for 2 months and counting. They did reset my adaptive learning transmission which make it better, but remember you have to re teach it. Now that I’m plowing with it, it’s all messed up again. I also know there is a class action lawsuit against Ford and GM )this transmission was a joint venture with those 2 companies) I wish they would just put regular transmissions in these trucks. I’m a little ticked off since I paid $65,000 for a 2 year old truck with 56,000 miles on it. Love the truck, HATE the transmission. If you want to contact me my info is in my about section. The third gear issue is actually purposeful. Ride that gear out to 6,000 rpm and it will shift.

its unfortunate hes had these issues, and ive heard from numerous people that shifts on the 10 speed are unpredictable. Additionally, my dealer has told me that they have had a bunch of 7.3 that had valvetrain failures which were all related to cylinder number 2. ford is replacing them with longblocks. I have thankfully had no issues with my trans or engine (its a 6.7 so maybe thats a factor, not sure), but i did have an A/C failure at less than 10k miles and it also needed apim reprogramming to fix stuck message issues on the dash. Time will tell how these trucks hold up, but i hold they do well in the long run because they are one of the nicest trucks to drive on the market today as long as they arent broken.

While I do hear about some failures with the 6.7 diesels, most of the people having the most trouble with the 10 speed transmission seem to be running the 7.3 Godzilla gas engines. Some of the early trucks with the 7.3 10 speed have bad transmissions. They had a bad batch of bearings. My 2020 7.3 10 speed transmission did the same thing last September. It sat at the dealership for 2 months waiting for a new transmission. Good luck

This truck has 3.55 gears, correct? Why on earth would they put 37”, 80lb tires on a truck with 3.55 gears? Plus he’s always carrying over 2,000 lbs in the bed. I made sure to order a CCLB 4x4 7.3 with 4.30 gears because I knew I was adding bigger and heavier 35x12.50r20 wheels and tires. Still a sweet truck and this dude seems like a cool guy. How does he live in Seattle around all those crazies?

That AT topper is nice...but the price took my breath away for sure at close to 15K. My 28 foot single slide private bedroom travel trailer was less than 24K. I love the 48 inch drawer storage you made. You could sell that its so well thought out.

Yeah, I agree that AT isn't very price competitive (especially compared with travel trailers, which you get a lot for not much money). Their base price is at or above their direct competitors' fully-optioned prices. And AT's don't have some basics like windows/side doors in their base model. But, it is the best thing for my needs. And the build quality is quite good. I've been going to record a long-term review for it... but I need to get around to it.

One of the main reasons I got rid of my 2020 F350 Powerstroke 10 speed. The transmission recall. Distressed first gear planetary bearing, 10+ hours of labor, ford only had 50% of the parts at the time and the fix was for the dealer to pull and rebuild the transmission in the shop. No thanks, not on a truck with less than 10,000 miles. They should have been replacing the transmissions with reman or new transmissions, not having a rebuild done at the dealer.

Cool to get a long term update on past rigs/builds! Seattle folk, gotta love em. Nice and helpful. But 50K miles on a tranny and it is having issues? Seems like what I have said before comes into play. There is a reason manufacturers do not over engineer their products. (cost being obviously 1 of them) When you max out weights and modify the original design putting extra stress on things, is it any wonder problems crop up? I mean, I get it, if you want to do what Warren does, you need something built for the task. Seems that tranny needed an upgrade as well to accommodate the other changes made. Best of luck!

If you guys think this transmission has issues, you need to wake up. Their will be some in every vehicle period. No matter the maker. Same thing with engine issues. It matters how the manufacturers deal with the issue at hand and improve their product. Many, many people have had no issue working their trucks hard.

They messed up when they built this truck! It should’ve had 4.30 gears if they’re gonna add 37” tires that weigh 80 lbs a piece. I got 4.30 gears because I added 35x12.50r20 wheels and tires. My tires weigh 70 pounds a piece. Then he always has 2,000 lbs in the bed and tows an unaerodynamic brick of a trailer. Recipe for disaster.

The TFL videos is why I got a 7.3 250 as well. Lots of these transmissions go bad, there was an update to prevent the failure, but if it was applied too late its a total replacement. I got the ford ext warranty because of this. However the reality is the engines and 10 speed can be had for cheap, so its not end of world to replace it unlike a more exotic car.

He took it to the dealer and they re-flashed the computer and it made it better but it's not 100% fixed. He also tows an RV trailer about 7K pounds from Texas to Yellowstone and Arizona and other places which should be easy duty. The transmission is a problem period. Ford blew it on the transmission.

The 7.3 should definitely last past 300k miles easy without any major repairs the 10 speed is up in the air. Would be interesting to see some that hold up well past 150k the average lifespan of a automatic transmission. If the body holds up and the way prices are headed for trucks I'd keep it alive by rebuilding what needs to get done. Ford made a great decision to make this engine a pushrod. A proper competitor to a diesel motor without the complications. I'd love to see this engine turbocharged. I think if Ford could properly turbocharge this motor it would be a better competitor to the ever powerful diesel motors of today. We'll see what shops do in the meantime to amp this truck up.
