    When I lived in NZ money got transferred to the wrong bank account because a 1 was interpreted as a 7. Online banking was around, can’t remember why I did a paper based transaction. Anyway, I asked the friendly lady at the bank to write down the numbers from 0 to 9 on a paper. I think she found that a bit odd but she was kind and did it. And it turned out the 9 and 7 also looked a bit different 😂

    The German way to write a One may not be the only right way but it's definitely the better way in terms of avoiding confusing with the great letter I. There is still a confusion with the Zero and the great letter O, so some people learned to write the Zero with a diagonal line (that is not common in Germany, but I think it's an international scientific way because in science there can be arise great damage when letters or numbers get confused so they have to use methods to avoid it!)

  • 2 жыл бұрын

    We never crossed the zero in math. I only learned this (and I don't do it actually… I did it for a short time decades ago) when I got into computers. And a quick glance at some videos here on YT by Numberphile (highly recommended), they *don't* slash their zeros.

    If you write an o or O you put a "curl" inside the top to make it distinct from an 0.

  • @reinhard8053

    @reinhard8053

    In handwriting it is not so much of a problem but with computers 0 and O are more important. If you use the commandline in Windows you can still see the Zero with the diagonal line. I and l are another problem (thats i and L). The one (1) is at least different.

    What a great video! I can identify how your kids are developing. You can probably assume from my name that I'm German background. Came here to the US when I was 5, a long time ago, quickly picked up American traits. Lost my German language ability quickly, my parents wanted me to speak English only. What is amazing to me !!! is that now in older age, my german is coming back. Its asifit was on the back burner of the brain. I can speak relatively fluently.

    That was so much fun to hear these stories from you. Certain character traits are definitely inherited, other things the children learn from over time and after a certain time they adopt what they like. Your wonderful children have the opportunity to get an insight into different cultural approaches and that is really wonderful. They then decide more subconsciously what they like better.

    I completely identified with your son's level of order and neatness. My 15 year old boy is the neatest, tidiest kid I know. He has also been like this since he was 1 to 2 years old. There was no such thing as asking him to tidy up as he always naturally did it. He makes me laugh as whenever he sees an untidy house (on TV or in real life) he tells me that it makes him feel "messed up" lolol.

    When we learned English at school as a second language, we actually had one teacher who told us that the numbers are written differently in English than in German and it could lead to big misunderstandings especially with the digits 1, 4 and 7 and he showed us the differences and potential misunderstandings. I think, it's important to learn this, but I don't know if that was just our teacher's idea to tell us about it or if everyone learns about this.

    About directness: Poles are this way also, which is often seen as blunt, or even rude by foreigners from English speaking countries. I'm Polish, living in California for the last 30 yrs, I learned to be more considerate/ soft in my conversations in English. Now whenever I go to Poland, I'm taken aback by the directness of my Polish family + friends.

    I write a 5 the Hessian way. Beginning at the bottom left I write it all the way to the top right in only one go. That was a new approach at one of the Hessian elementary school teacher colleges at the end of the 1950s, only for a few years. My teacher graduated there and taught us this weird 5. My 7 has a dash and my 1 starts at the same line where it ends, like a very tight inverted V.

    To write the 1 like an l or an I is a bad idea. This gives so much confusion. "I0l" "101"? "LOL" "Ten Liter"? This is the reason you make the upstroke. And the 7 gets the cross-stroke to make it distinct to the 1.

    I really don't know many perfectly organized germans who keep everything tidy and in order all the time, that is just such a cliche ;). My kids (well, by blood they are half asian, maybe that's the reason) are messy. Always have been. And I'm sometimes surprised that they haven't forgotten their head in school. Because they sure forgot everything else by now.... As for the numbers, the kids in german schools have to write the 1 like this. Otherwise they would get in trouble... I write the 1 the american way ever since I attended an american high school...But in elementary school you are definetely not allowed to do it that way....

    These German traits are what enabled West Germany to bounce back after World War 2. Here in Britain no one gives a fig whether deadlines are met. The inefficiencies one sees here are so commonplace that shoddy, lackadaisical workmanship is par for the course. One sees temporary traffic lights at a road works, but the workmen are just sitting around jawing with each other. Last week we had another sink hole appear in one of the local town's main thoroughfares. Once again the council has erected Road Closed signs. This is the FOURTH time it has happened! Every time, the road is closed for literally months. The water company blames the electricity company and the electricity company blames the phone company. This has been going on for at least two years. The rest of the world can build skyscrapers, but we can't fix a sink hole. This, sadly, is typical of Britain in 2022, while the Prime Minister constantly talks of "Global Britain", which it is anything but.

    You must not see your country so negatively. In Germany, they were not able to build an airport in Berlin (planned construction costs 2.6 billion, has cost 7 billion so far) because of bad planning and unqualified companies. A new railway station in Stuttgart did not cost the planned 3 billion, but 10 billion. Every year, many billions of taxpayers' money are burnt on nonsensical and overpriced projects. In the German army, more money is spent on planning and advisors than reaches the troops. As you can see, idiots are evenly distributed around the world.
