If you think about it, the 4 rotten children's fates follow old expressions: Augustus: "If you eat too much of something, you'll turn into it." He ate so much chocolate he fell in the river when he didn't listen to Wonka. After being sent up the pipe, the oompa loompas seemed to have turned him into chocolate. Violet: "Pride cometh before the fall." Violet and her mother were so arrogant that Wonka's warnings didn't faze them. Violet ended up being turned into a blueberry that made her tower above everyone, making her lonely at the top. Afterwards, they learned a huge lesson. Violet's mom learned that her daughter's well being is more important than winning all the time and Violet learned that winning isn't everything. Veruca: "Spoiled rotten." Everyone will agree that Veruca was badly spoiled. Once she got covered in trash, her outer appearance reflected her personality: disgusting. Her father learned that being a pushover was getting him nowhere and that his daughter needed to learn the importance of inner beauty. Mike: "You can educate a fool, but you cannot make him think." Mike might have been educated, but he didn't think about the repercussions of his actions. Therefore, when he sent himself through TV, he was taunted by the oompa loompas for being foolish. He was stretched out to try to correct his size, but his size after being sent to TV reflected how small minded he really was.

I love how Wonka waits until after Veruca is thrown down the garbage chute to "find" the right key for the gate. It shows the kind of meticulous game he's playing, weeding out the naughty kids. Don't know if this is better than "I want it now" (and there has to be a ton of appreciation for a child pulling off that scene, as a professional actress I doubt I could pull off that scene) but this is a very good take on it. There's something very erie about a hippie number about new found friends having the subtext of "you're trash" and you've got to appreciate the effort Deep Roy went to for this movie. Both can be very different but well done takes on the same scene, which is my view. There doesn't need to be a definitive version.

Just goes to show how much of a wimp & a pushover he is. As a millionaire and a nut-tycoon he thinks that that money is the solution to everything & lets his daughter act unruly with no discipline. All he needs to do is hop the gate & rescue her (anyone really) but he hasn’t the spine to do it. It’s only after she falls into the chute, he gets “pushed over” by a squirrel after her, and they leave the factor embarrassed (covered in garbage) does he finally grow a spine.

I like the songs they play cause they represent the personalities of the children in them. Augustus Gloop's song is stompy and deep, representing his overweightness with heavy drums and trumpets. Violet Beauregarde's song is very jazzy with keyboards and sound very swaying and Oompa Loompas even dance in a victory dance with the hands pointing up and then pointing down. Veruca Salt's song is very relaxing and also swaying for its context, like you're in a luxurious garden and swaying in a hammock, living the life of luxury, signifying her status of being incredibly rich. There's even a use of Indian string instrument usually used when displaying scenes of royalty in Indian plays. Mike Teavee's song has a lot of rock and heavy guitar and drums, representing his violent tendencies and how you're supposed to bob your head up and down aggressively when hearing that kind of music. Exactly the kind of thing he would do.

The song actually kinda goes hard I can’t lie. It’s so catchy. The Gene Wilder version is a classic, but this version of the story is just better, I’m sorry. The set design too is just incredible, a great script, loyal to the source material and a staple of my childhood. Revisiting it once in a while is always a pleasure even though you might know it off by heart. ❤️

It's amazing what Roald Dahl could get away with publishing. In one of his novels, there was a species of supernatural humanoids that cursed/killed children in brutal ways because to to them they smelled like dog s$%t. They were planning on doing a mass school poisoning of sorts, turning them to mice.

Unpopular opinion: Veruca was the least sinister child of the four guilty ones. She's an absolute brat to her dad solely because he raised her with the inability to say no, but she literally only picks on him. She seemed concerned for Violet when she asked Wonka: "Will Violet always be a blueberry?" And told her mother about the County Fair idea. Veruca seems the evilest by portrayal, but she's actually a decent person to anyone other than her dad.

  • @tommyl.dayandtherunaways820

Yes I agree Veruca's problem is one of nurture, not nature, no one is born a spoiled brat, they are made that way. Plus something you often find with "spoiled rich kids" is that they actually have very sheltered and lonely childhoods. Their parents buy them gifts to make up for the fact that they're never actually there for them. For Veruca, asking her dad for a new pony or whatever is probably the only way to get his attention, since he's always working. She probably has never had a real friend in her life either. Everyone either sees her as a piggy bank or as an entitled rich girl. I honestly feel more bad for her than anything.

@@Imlizzmitchell This might sound like an odd headcanon, but I think if she resisted her temptation here, she and Charlie would've tied. She doesn't have an obsession like the other three, we only just heard that she has any pets at all in this scene. (Other than the pony she mentioned before.) But like Tommy said, she loves pets because she actually can spend time with them while her family works all the time. So it's understandable why she'd want a trained squirrel in this scene. Back to what I originally said though, I don't think she would've beaten Charlie, but since she lacks a strong obsession like the others, she likely would've tied. I feel like at that point she would've actually let Charlie have the factory since she's already really rich and doesn't need it. Knowing that the factory would take her away from her father would make her realize she won't get everything she wants anymore, and a factory isn't worth it over everything she already has at home.
