More details : 1 in the palque "Ernie's Restaurant", you can see a man wearing a hat, possibly James Stewart going to the restaurant before we see him inside. 2 when the camera moves in to Madeleine, a woman passes through the shot, wearing the exact grey suit that will become Scotty's obsession. 3 green, the rather spectacular shawl draped around Madeleine, is the colour she will be bathed in when she comes out of the bathroom in her final transformation, wearing just that grey suit we just saw walk by in this shot. 4 the shadow Madeleine and then more obviously Gavin are walking through is absolutely intentional, no DP would let something like that happen by accident. 5 Scotty is never actually watching Madelene as she leaves, he is rather FEELING her presence because his eyes are never in her direction.This is a masterly choreography of avoidance. In a way, Scotty misses her before he even gets to know her. He also doesn't really see her, which is the crux of the story. 6 when the camera cuts back to Madeleine's profile, the depth of field has changed, making the background totally out of focus. (This is either a longer lens or an increased aperture, making shallower depth of field) There would usually have been just one shot cut into two parts with the shot of Scotty spliced into the middle. 7 After the cut to Scotty, we get the second half of the first profile shot. So the additional profile with shallower depth is possibly a bit of another take of the same action. 8 Multiple meanings for the mirror : they are two-faced, they are double-crossing, Scotty is being framed and so on. Hitchcock just loved that sort of thing. This is probably one of the most accomplished scenes in cinema history. One minute of absolute perfection.

About no 6 ) Producer Herbert Coleman mention that he reshot the scene of Madeleine 'cus in the first scene she looks at Scottie, and it didn't felt right.They were worried that the audiences would catch on, that there was something devious about that. So they had to recreate part of Ernie's restaurant again. Hicth was on holiday but when he saw it later he was not pleased that he had used a 3 inch lens since Htich had use a 2 inch lens in his footage. Herbert said, there was not much background to work with as most of the restaurant set was gone.

@@no288 Thank you very much for this information !! It explains the change of focal length. I was convinced it was intentional. And I've been trying to figure out why he did it. That he was not happy about it makes perfect sense , too, because the change does break the linearity of the scene. You see, the problem with Hitchcock films is that you try to find a reason for absolutely everything because he was so obsessive about so many things and very little is ever unintentional. 's why I erred...

@@rolandcassar75 My pleasure. I believe, that the blurry background, is also to hide it was not a perfect macth of the background as seen in the earlier close up scene of Madeleine. The light on her face is not quite the same, neither are the hair bun, in the added scene shot later. Did you ever notice, the light change in the book store, when Pop Leibel give us the background story of Carlotta? Suddenly the room turns very dark. Seems odd.

@@no288 Yes, I've noticed that. I assumed that, too, was intentional. Hard to believe they used natural light to the extent that a passing cloud would darken the scene. So I thought it must have a meaning. Darkness descending.

This film alone can be used as a standard template for film making. It's astonishing to see how any filmmaker can achieve such a highest level of perfection that it is almost unimaginable that this will ever be surpassed. It's like gold standard. A mathematical formula. A scientific law. A rule. Vertigo has completely mesmerizing. I have been watching movies from 1930s era this including international cinema especially Russian masterpieces, however I wonder why such a perfection never achieved as is in Hitchcock case. A genuine God gifted talent.

Your final paragraph where you summarize Hitchcock’s technique and how the whole idea of a man falling in love and being obsessed affects you sums it up perfectly for me

Thank you. Absolutely fantastic. I'd like to see you do more on Vertigo. There is so much haunting material to unpack. Impossible to get closure with this and move on to something else. I'm stuck on this film and can't escape!

Film can enter our conscientiousness in multiple ways beautifully discussed here. Hitchcock was a true artist on the level of any great historical one...impressionism...all of the movements. This video was a delightful observation.....perfect, actually....Thank you for this contribution to the intellectual film world!

One if my all time favourite films if not my favourite. I loved your analysis 👏👏

9:12 this scene is a new shot done/added later. At 9:24 we are back to the original footage/scene.

Great analysis but the thing I thought was curious about this scene was when as she goes past James Stewart, she glides out. It doesn’t even look like she’s walking. I even wondered if they didn’t have her on some sort of rolling platform where she didn’t even take steps. That’s the part I can’t figure out. Maybe it’s to start her ghostly, dream like behavior.

That's a great point and not something I even noticed! You're right though, it does look like she's floating. I definitely think it was intentional. Like you said, it helps create that dream-like quality to her character. It also makes her seem surreal and angelic, in the same way that Scottie sees her.

Hitchcock perfected this smooth gliding movement with Miss Danvers in Rebecca. I believe they both wore satin slippers and shuffled out. Definitely NOT roller skates!

Another interesting fact was Hitchcock never looked through the camera...his producer said he was the camera...he had everything in his mind he knew exactly what he wanted told the cameraman what he wanted and it was perfect every time

In the theatre, green is the colour traditionally associated with ghosts.

Green: Deception or duplicity. Yellow: Safe, a shield, no threat. Red: Love. Blue: Extreme sadness. Purple: Deep sadness mixed with conflict and confusion (born from that duplicity). Green alternative: Scotty's obsession with Madeline, but less so than in her manipulation and dishonesty. Black: Danger or secrets. Gray: The color of Madeline, the Idol.

Just notice, theres another lady walking passed Madeleine wearing the grey outfit she'll have on later. Maybe it's the same lady he confuses with her at the restaurant in the 2nd half?

Ernie's was a real restaurant and the red velvet wallpaper was real...and it was...expensive. Not heard to get a bill of one K for 6 to 8 diners. Great analysis however
