An old gent with ten fingers who sold me firewood many decades ago once told me the key to splitting safely is never even touch the surface you are splitting. Only the bark sides, and you will never get pinched. Good advice.

I don't think there's a stick of wood this splitter will not handle and I'm so happy to see you using this I have watched you work with not so desirable equipment that was very frustrating to say the least but with hard work and good planning, you have came a long way. It makes me feel good inside to see good people do well only the best wishes to you Sandy.

Wow, buddy, Eastonmade should have given you that splitter... AND... paid you royalties off every one you've sold with this series of videos. If I was in the market for a log splitter, and having seen your old... old one, and then the horizontal Eastonmade splitter, and then this one, my mind would be made up!! OK, interesting to see how wood splits after being through a hard freeze. It doesn't just 'split,' it POPS! I don't know how else to say it... I'm not there with you, drinking your 'Sludge' while you're working, but... how many times can I say it... I'm impressed Sandy!!! Stay safe, buddy... you're at the point with this new machine that complacency can set in. Back off a hair and think about how you're doing things... don't get yourself hurt. I have wondered how some of the pieces that you made with your horizontal splitters would work. This gives you the ability to control the size much better. If you put the big round on the left side and split the pieces off to the right it looks like it would be faster. You wouldn't have to handle them as often. When splitting the smaller pieces, always split so that the piece you are splitting into the final size can go directly to the elevator. Just what I observed from the video. Sometimes when working, it is hard to step back and look at the entire process. The Axis looks like the way to go. Thanks for the video

As a younger man who heats his house and shop with strictly wood. These eastonmade splitters seem to be a good investment. Do to financial constraints I went with a Northstar 30 ton splitter for the time being. Although it runs through anything that I put in front of it and sure beats splitting by hand. Can’t help but regret just going with an Eastonmade right off the bat.

Hey Jimmy, I’ll be back to the sawmill before long. Always a back and forth for me this time of year.

Maybe picky but , on large blocks you tend to start splitting on the left side of the block and mulitple times have to when you have say 3 or more pieces , then push them to the right side and begin splitting those pieces. I think if you should start with the block pushed through to your left and start splitting as you work right side of block and pushing partially split to the right. You then are saving extra moves and time. Love this splitter.

Hi Sandy. Those are some great angles with the camera, almost like I was head butting the wood to split it. That set up looks great. Although a little more effort is needed to get the larger pieces from the cutting table to the splitter, you are not bending over to pick them up. Certainly, you are not having to toss the pieces into the bins. The amount of snow you have would have shut my city down. Have good days!

Nice tall/wide wedge which is very helpful on pieces such as swollen butts or crotches. I see that problem in conventional splitters that "go vertical" is you just can't fit most odd blocks in because the wedge and anvil is to short. Then it's back to my choice in those cases "chainsaw splitting". Thanks for producing my favorite show.

Those first and last rounds are about the size I use in the smoker. I'd never really seen anyone else bother with that size wood. Around here it seems everyone wants 16 to 18in pieces. The 8 to 10 in works best for my needs. I just might have to break down and pick up a cheap (lol) splitter now. Good vid. Thanks.

Yeah I put a few pieces through the splitter that were on the smaller size but it certainly was nicer to move around than those big ones

Think some of those blocks weighed as much as you, I've wrestled with bigger ones than that and it took me and my son both to get it under vertical side of my splitter, that's a great splitter you have. Be safe don't over extend yourself. John Toccoa GA

Lots of power

You have things set up nicely there! As you get more comfortable with the splitter, you will have a lightbulb moment where you bundle up a couple of your “first splits” and part out the smaller pieces 2 or 3 at a time. Makes for fewer strokes and quicker production 😊

That wood processing system is a s good as I've ever seen for a one man show. Love the working height of the table/Axxis. My wee horizontal is lower and kills my old back after 4-5 hrs. Good video. Also my 395 and 576 Huskys would have a fit if I asked them to work in the snow. I guess they're spoilt by our easier climate. Cheers from HB NZ

Great machine. Love the vertical splitters. One question I have and it’s not only you I see doing it. You put the log right of the wedge then split pieces off to the left and then push them all to right then split again. Seems like it would be better to start with the log to the left. Just wondering. Great channel!

Yeah for sure. Lots of nice character at times in some of the firewood. Tough decision for me quite often whether to make it firewood or lumber

why not get a camp woodstove to burn a couple pieces of firewood with a mud boiler on it just under your shed roof? that way you have fresh mud and warm up abit while taking a short break.

I haven't found any logs that wanted to kicked out at all. Just want to keep cuts relatively square and haven't had an issue

Hi Sandy, I see you have upped your game and put 4 IBC Cages instead of the two you originally had. Seems like a good way to go. Love that splitter set up. do you sell firewood or is this all for personal use?

Hi Sandy. You certainly struggled with those big chunks. Good thing you didn't need to lift them. Would it help if the splitter was a few inches closer to your rack? The splitter really snapped those frozen rounds. Good job. Nice video.

@@sawingwithsandy Hello Sandy. This is the note I left on another one of your blogs. Hello Sandy. Today, I visited two lumber stores in Sherwood Park, a suburb of Edmonton. Windsor Plywood is a major supplier of high-quality lumber in Alberta. They had two massive pieces of oak slabs, which I did not think would be relevant as a price guideline. However, they had a live-edge Ambrosia Maple slab (Planed and Kiln dried) which was similar to the pieces of oak you cut. The slab was 6/4 x 8 feet by 20 to 24 inches wide. The list price was $257, but they are having a sale, so that was reduced by another 20%. There was a walnut crotch which was $700.00 List. That smaller slab was 3 inches thick by 37 inches long. The trunk portion was 24 inches wide with the branches flaring to 24 inches in width. Home Depot did not have any live-edge maple or oak. But they did have live-edge pine (Planed and Kiln dried), with the bark on it. One slab was 2 inches thick and tapered from 20 inches to 16 inches. (Measured from outside of bark.) That piece was six feet long. In their lumber racks, a piece of oak board 1 x 6 inches x 8 feet was $65.00. Ontario prices may be different, but live edge slabs of your nice oak should be more valuable as lumber than firewood. I hope this helps. Jim.

Hi Sandy, I entered an incorrect measurement in my message. The trunk of the walnut crotch was 21 inches, flaring to 24 inches across the top of the branches.

Looks like it has a trip arm on the back to shift the up and down motion. What do you do if you need to back out of a cut half way through? Or am I just not seeing how it's run correctly?

Hi David. I think you're talking about the splitting wedge and in that case it is controlled by my foot for the up/down motion. When I let my foot off the foot pedal it automatically retracts

It is a great Machine! However most Canadians with a 8~5 job cannot afford a $20.000 dollar Wood Splitter! I would say you didn't pay that for it which is none of my business but for me I couldn't justify spending that amount of money for something that one would use a couple times a year! Building a affordable splitter would be better accepted by the average Canadian personally anything over and that would be the ceiling for a affordable wood splitter. These people are catering to people who have a small wood lot and firewood business. Good for you Sandy Their is always a benefit of having a youtube channel and this helps Eastwoods company promoting the splitter.

I think for certain splitters including this one you'd need to be able to justify the cost. Having a firewood business makes equipment like this a great thing to have to help maximize profits. But if someone wasn't selling firewood and had time available there could be cheaper options for sure; splitting axe, lower cost gas splitter etc.

I agree, there's no way I could ever justify the high price of this log splitter. That being said I would love to own one. I have to just keep on fixing my 20 year old piece of junk that I purchased from a yard sale.

why don't you use a multi way wedge on the axis?

Good question. I believe the reason Eastonmade doesn’t put a four way wedge on the axis is for safety as the hands would be in line with the extra two wedge sides that stick out
